Simon Goodwin has been announced Adelaide Captain.

Simon Goodwin will captain the Adelaide Football Club in the 2008 season.
Goodwin - a three-time Club Champion, two-time premiership player and four-time All-Australian - was the unanimous choice of the playing and coaching group. This selection was this morning ratified by the Board.
Goodwin, 30, will lead a new leadership group of six, also elected by the playing group. The other players are Nathan Bassett, Brett Burton, Tyson Edwards (all members of the 2007 panel), Ben Rutten (who was in the 2006 leadership group) and Nathan van Berlo.
“It is a huge honour to be elected as captain of the Adelaide Football Club,” Goodwin said. “It will be a tough job to follow Mark (Ricciuto) but there is a great feeling around the club at the moment and everyone is really excited about next season. We have introduced a lot of younger players to the group, which is refreshing, but we also believe we have the players to remain highly competitive. I’m also pleased to have Ben (Rutten) back in the leadership group and to have a new face in Nathan, who has developed so much since he was drafted just three years ago.”
Goodwin, 30, will be the fifth player to captain the Adelaide Football Club following Chris McDermott (1991-94), Tony McGuinness (1995-96), Mark Bickley (1997-2000) and Mark Ricciuto (2001-2007).
Chief Executive Steven Trigg said: “On behalf of the Board, we fully endorse the recommendation of the players and the match committee. It is an exciting time for the Adelaide Football Club and Simon is the ideal person to lead the Club through this period.”
Senior coach Neil Craig said: “Simon clearly has earned enormous respect and trust from our playing group and the coaches and he will be a fitting appointment to captain the Adelaide Football Club. I also recognise the effort of Ben Rutten to return to the leadership group a year after being voted out.
“And the selection of Nathan van Berlo at a relatively young age - to be recognised in this way by his peers – shows clearly how he has demonstrated the qualities needed to be in the leadership group. He is not there for the experience, he is there because he can do the job required.”
2008 Leadership Panel
Simon Goodwin (captain). Age: 30. 215 AFL games.
Nathan Bassett. Age: 31. 187 AFL games.
Tyson Edwards. Age: 32. 266 AFL games.
Brett Burton. Age: 29. 151 AFL games.
Ben Rutten. Age: 24. 80 AFL games.
Nathan van Berlo. Age: 21. 53 AFL games.

Good to see Goodwin got the gig, really deserved it. Also very pleasing to see VB and Rutten come in!

Can't say I'm overly surprised :D I think the Club has probably made the right choice in going down the 'experienced' path, plus Goody captained most of our games this year anyway.

On a side note, absolutely stoked to see young Nathan van Berlo enter the leadership group :thumbsu: Shows he really does have excellent leadership qualities and could be a possible future captain.

Just got the news via the email, well done to Goody not much of a surprise. I wonder how many year/s he will serve as captain. Only one way to find out.

Good to see Truck and VB in Leadership panel.

Congratulations Goody, was the only fair choice:thumbsu:

Yep

Out of Goodwin, Edwards or Bassett (possibly even Burton) one or two of those will not play in 2009 so it will open a door for Thompson or knights to join the leadership group.

Goodwin should be captain for the next 2 year then Rutten or Van Berlo could take over.

Pretty logical choice and its great to see Rutten get back into the leadership group and Nathan van Berlo get his first crack at it. Both promotions were thoroughly deserved.

Goodwin was always the best candidate to lead us for the next couple of years until one of the young guns is ready to take over.

A safe bet. Oh, woops :)

Im sure West Coast will nab Van Berlo at the end of the year.

Now that he's been identified as leadership material.

Anyone have any idea how many games he has already captained?
Most of last season for starters.

Was the only choice really as no one else really ready at this stage.

VB likely to step into his shoes when Goody retires.

Thompson off-field antics cost him getting in the leadership group.

congrats Goodwin, was in my opinion the best leader of the club behind Roo.

I'm glad to see they didn't go with a young player to captain, it should always be the best player who captains the club.

No need, they already have Stinger, who if he stayed could well have been captain of AFC instead of Goody.

Great news for Goody and much deserved.

I had a very good discussion last night about if the key word being opportunity at the club for next year, do we go down the path of a young captain or a more experienced player to guide us. I was in the camp of an experienced captain being needed for one year and the club would need to put vB and Rutten into the leadership group. :D

I can only really echo the sentiments already expressed. Pleased for Goody and delighted to see vB there as well as Truck. Not at all surprised by Thommo not being there.

Last night at our AGM a question was raised about making sure we keep players such as van Berlo, Knights and Maric and the answer from Trigg was that we will make sure that they don't come out of contract.....
