Their own fault really.

Threw away a 2 goal lead against the US, and probably should have lost if not for an incorrect referee decision. Then came into tonight only needing to draw, and they couldn't do that either.

They had their chances, the USA have been the best team in this group quite comfortably IMO - they didn't deserve to go out, even if I can't stand that country in anything.
Probably no. They were outplayed against England so I don't see how they were clearly the best team. Either way - I don't think it's possible to be comfortably the best team in the group when you were outplayed (and it was quite convincingly - wastefulness gave them a draw, and Green) against your main rival.

Even their performance against Slovenia was no better than England's. With the chances England had, on most days it would've been a 3 or 4 goal margin. Granted the US were quite productive in terms of chances against Slovenia but the frequency of chanes they allowed was far greater.

I didn't see their game against Algeria - so I can't compare but would safely assume their performance was better than England's.

Not sure how one can say they were clearly the best team in the group - when at best they were marginally superior and even that is very debatable.

is that the new face giving him the dirty look or the old one

i'd rather Upson to be honest. Carragher is shit
Apart from the possibly World Cup saving tackle at the end - Upson was terrible, only Barry was worse.

He looked terrible on the ball every time and was guilty of giving too many fouls away in promising positions.

He's not good enough.

I don't know what I'd do re: Carragher v Upson to be honest.

Oh, that's right. PLAY DAWSON!

Look Dawson should be playing but he wont unfortunately so that leaves Carragher and Upson unless King gets back. I would still take Upson even after his display last night. Carragher is just a shocking player

I thought King would be back for the knock out rounds? Would Capello risk him against Germany? His record in big games is outstanding.

Anyone who has seen Deutschland play so far, will know that their clever interplay and short passing game will expose England at the back quite alarmingly. Can only imagine Carragher falling on his arse.

Another concern for England, is they don't have a pure defensive midfielder to mark Ozil. His intelligence, his clever runs and the way he finds space is really, really impressive - especially for someone of his age. He drifts around the pitch, like he's gliding. It's quite something.

Milner was awesome on the right wing. Upson looks due for a ****-up.

I only watched the first half (then switched over to the second half for usa vs alg, epic match), but I thought Milner was absolutely atrocious for the first 30 mins or so then remained quiet for the rest of that half. I wouldn't have been surprised if he got subbed at half time, but he set up the goal which saved his arse.

I then kept switching over from usa vs alg to keep in touch with what was hapening with england in the second half, and milner appeared to be playing much better from the few moments i saw.

He got better as the game went on but he showed moments of real quality that made his performance a good one, imo. Cut his marker to pieces a few times as well. Will be interesting to see if Capello starts him on the right wing against Germany.

Milner's first 20 minutes were poor - after that he was arguably the best player on the pitch.

He had a good game, approaching very good but not quite.

England beat Germany in Germany not long ago. They only looked good against Aus because they didn't turn up.

Around 8 years ago so it wouldn't have any bearing on this game.

Ah yes my mistake they met in both 2007 and 2008 in friendly matches.

Germany beat them 2-1 at Wembley in 07 and England followed suit beating them 2-1 at the Olympiastadion in 08.

Looks like a pre match beer was the tonic England needed to win.

Pretty inventive from Capello coming up with something like this I must say.
