Probably no. They were outplayed against England so I don't see how they were clearly the best team. Either way - I don't think it's possible to be comfortably the best team in the group when you were outplayed (and it was quite convincingly - wastefulness gave them a draw, and Green) against your main rival.Their own fault really.
Threw away a 2 goal lead against the US, and probably should have lost if not for an incorrect referee decision. Then came into tonight only needing to draw, and they couldn't do that either.
They had their chances, the USA have been the best team in this group quite comfortably IMO - they didn't deserve to go out, even if I can't stand that country in anything.
Even their performance against Slovenia was no better than England's. With the chances England had, on most days it would've been a 3 or 4 goal margin. Granted the US were quite productive in terms of chances against Slovenia but the frequency of chanes they allowed was far greater.
I didn't see their game against Algeria - so I can't compare but would safely assume their performance was better than England's.
Not sure how one can say they were clearly the best team in the group - when at best they were marginally superior and even that is very debatable.
