Expansion If West Sydney comes in do the Western Bulldogs change?

Not ideal to have:
Western Bulldogs (Based in Footscray, Melbourne)
West Coast Eagles (Based in Perth, WA)
West Sydney ...

Especially when the Bulldogs don't have a relevance to Melbourne or Footscray in their name.

Could the Footscray Bulldogs be a chance like when the Kangaroos got back North Melbourne?

I dont believe the AFL have actually said the team will be called West Sydney, only that they want it based in West Sydney.

I assume same would go for the Gold Coast?

'West Sydney' and 'Gold Coast' clearly spell out the regions they represent.

The exact same thing can be said for the Western Bulldogs - but the big difference is that, being a Melbourne based club, they can still represent 'the greater western suburns' while retaining (or resuming) their traditional suburban name of Footscray, which has been a part of their history for over 120 years.

So yeah - I'd like to see the return of Footscray along with the advent of West Sydney.

And you think a generic name will do that? Must be why Collingwood and Essendon have such big support bases....

Dunno whether changing it to Western has done any good. Still well and truly in the bottom 3 teams in Melbourne in terms of support, arguably the bottom.

I think we have support, it's just that they're fickle. If we finished top 4 (which I think we're the only club since 2000 that hasn't) then quite a few supporters would come out of hiding. Hell we have 8,700 unrenewed supporters.

This is not really an issue. You can have 10 teams with West in their name, just really a matter for the individual club to decide.

Werribee secondary College is a Bulldog school and gets Dogs players down rarely which is pretty good.
