Only thing I took out of the game is that Worsfold didn't look happy which is good because we were shithouse for 3 qrts.
Mate at no stage did we have our full team on the park. Jok played wing majority of the game, Long played most of the game, Smack and Smith didnt play first half, Zerrett barely played etc etc

I think Smith should have played in the first half would have set the standard for defensive pressure because when he came on after half time the team lifted imo.

Did anyones notiss thet we only got back into the game when Shiel went off? Jus lik wen Joe stopped playin last year we started playin good footies together as a proper team. Best we pick others ahead of them until we start losing all the time again.

Am I doin this rite?

Dont think any of the senior players took it seriously. Murph and Simmo for us definitely going through the motions and a lot of yours no doubt the same.

Other than Stringer who was pretty firey, looks like he could be in for a big year. Bit of a w***er though. The package!

Happy that Daniher played some minutes, I’ll tick that off as a huge win.

Some signs of the run from half back looks like we will break teams apart.

Heppell and Merrett returning from injury also got some miles into the legs. Midfield didn’t get out of first gear but meh it’s a practice match.

The more I think about this match the less worried I am about it

1) We ran the game out strongly, okay Carlton took the foot off the gas but we were still able to respond
2) Tonight shows just how much the old suburban grounds helped the home side
3) Joey appears to have got though with no injury and he did take a nice mark and goal
4) Key players had good patches of play
5) Come season proper we will only have 22 which means the side will be more settled than it was tonight with 26
6) The loss keeps expectations in check
7) Shiel looks good in an Essendon jumper
8) Pigeon kicked two nice goals and looked good in the second half
9) Guys like Hepp and Merrett are being eased into it and so they were quiet
10) No major injuries

I didn't see it as Carlton taking the foot off the gas pedal, I saw it as more us not caring until late in the 3rd quarter and using the margin as practice for closing a gap.

I tend to agree as in we were clearly rusty early and after HT we were better at hitting targets and seemed to play with more intent.

Let’s just say it wasn’t good. Not disastrous like last year, but not good.

We didn’t look fluent and again look behind the 8-ball at this stage. Hopefully it’s not too far.

There’s always the “forget it all, it’s pre season!” mob who steadfastly refuse to pay any attention at all to pre season results.

Personally I disagree - it’s not like years ago when you’d have 4 preseason games and genuinely ease into it. You have two competitive hit outs and then the real stuff starts - it’s 20 days away now. You don’t just flick a switch in a couple of weeks and go into beast mode. These two JLT games are played at very high intensity and most players are tuned up. They’re a good form guide.

Last year was a perfect example. I couldn’t believe the people who stuck their heads in the sand after Richmond - who should’ve been 4 weeks behind us due to playing in the GF the year before - absolutely blew us off the park to the tune of 100-odd points. A result like that clearly shows you have massive issues. People thought it meant nothing. But it showed precisely the terrible state we were in and 6-8 weeks into the season, our year was over. Before we took unprecedented, drastic steps and had a coaching shake up after 8 weeks.

So this wasn’t good. Again, nothing like the pathetic shit from last year, and I expect Carlton will have improved a bit. But we need to have as well. Have we? Who knows, but we were underwhelming. We’re in better shape than this time last year, but that’s not saying much. We need to hit the ground running and not just wake up in round 7 or 8 again.

What shits me they beat us the same way every time lock us in our D50 where our kicks and disposals by hand is all ways hurried and fumbled how many losses to these **** is going to take before we learn how to beat them?

I liked when Smith came on straight away he had a Carlton player buried into the turf with a tackle love the bloke.

They didn't take the foot off the pedal, it was inevitable they were gassed as they have a midfield full of kids under 22.

Some people on here kind of need reminding that even when when we lost to the blues in the middle of last season last year we still got our crap together and went onto beat some good teams including West Coast over there, going 10-4 from that point.

It might be a bit early to be giving up the entire year after losing a preseason match that doesn't mean a single thing. We got through without serious injury and Daniher played a few quarters. We should all be over the moon.

As Adelaide from last year can asset to, an off season is a long time in football. The concern is with the messaging in correlation to what happened yesterday.

Assistant coach Hayden Skipworth says Essendon is placing a high importance on the JLT Community Series.
The Bombers will open their JLT campaign against Carlton at Ikon Park on Thursday night, before facing Geelong at GMHBA Stadium a week later.
Skipworth, who’s in charge of Essendon’s midfield, said the current pre-season competition format meant teams had to hit the ground running.
“We take every game seriously,” Skipworth told RSN 927.
“We want to get our game plan rolling and our guys in form early … We know we don’t have that third game (of pre-season anymore).”

I hope that wasn't a reflection of us taking it seriously.
