JLT2 vs Saints

I also find it disappointing that Lewis Young has not figured in either squad of 30 for the JLT. I hope that doesn't mean that his form in the pre-season shows insufficient improvement. It's probably a team balance thing but if he has shown good form he should be able to force his way in irrespective of the incumbents. We need all the KPPs we can get so hopefully he's not far away.

B: Easton Wood, Aaron Naughton, Dale Morris
HB: Hayden Crozier, Zaine Cordy, Caleb Daniel
C: Lachie Hunter, Jack Macrae, Ed Richards
HF: Billy Gowers, Josh Schache, Sam Lloyd
F: Toby McLean, Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore
Ruck: Jackson Trengove, Josh Dunkley, Mitch Wallis

Fair to say that these 18 players start in Round 1?

And Suckling, Williams and English in too?

So leaves one spot to be decided. Who should it be?

Looks like the round 1 side doesn’t it DR.

I’m a Cavarra man. Keen to see him play. But Dickson is a must if he’s actually in good nick.

Man our forward line sucks tho. So shit.

Team balance just seems out of whack. 3 starting midfielders are all slow, 2 with poor foot skills. Our full forward line could easily be our starting midfield.

I'm finding it really weird to have Wallis named as a mid after he started last week in the centre when his best form has been forward of the ball.

Statistically we have a huge negative clearance differential when he starts in the midfield too.

I'd find a spot for Dickson but Duryea seems to be in our plans. At a guess Duryea is it, Wallis goes forward and English starts from the square as named last week.

We'll find out a lot if either English or Schache only play half a game as we tend to only lay a 4 man rotation on the bench during JLT.

Wouldn’t worry too much about starting positions. Half the time I reckon bevo takes the piss. Wouldn’t expect to see Libba playing much forward pocket either.

It's more overall balance to the team. Their both very good players when played in their best positions, but I just can't help but feel the team would like a lot more balanced if we replaced Wallis or Dunkley with a pacier and more skillful type like Cavarra.

There is a spot for Cavarra, we need a hard nut in the Clay Smith mode and Cavarra is that guy. If not round 1 I see him breaking into the team early especially if we suffer a few loses.

Schache will not play well being the main marking target. Either Cordy, Naughten or the resting ruckmen will need to go forward. Schache plays the lead up, run back roles creating space and getting on the end of a few passes. He is not a crash the pack player.

Based on last year, Wallis is that guy.
I suspect Caverra will get his chance during the year.

I thought I read somewhere that he was trying to build his physique and he realised he needed to learn how to crash packs.
He's still only 94kg though. Needs to be up around 97-98kg IMO.

Why does the main forward need to crash packs? Why can't he play in the Nick Riewoldt style?

If he can take some contested marks near the goals I'd be happy.

Not too many players average more than one contested mark per game these days.
We had two last year - Naughton (1.50) and Wood (1.17). Our next best was Cordy (1.0).

Only 10 players averaged 2 or more last year

It's interesting to see that Schache has only averaged more than one CM per game in one season over his 3-year career - and that was in his first season. He also had roughly double the number of goal assists, inside 50s, 1%ers and tackles in that year compared to last year (admittedly having played a few extra games that year).

Here are the comparative stats:
Year: Games , K-H-Disp , G-B , CMs-Tk-i50s-1%-GAs
2016: 17, 91-56-147 , 16-18 , 21-26-27-22-7
2018: 13, 98-61-159 , 17-11 , 9-14-14-10-3

I'm not saying that last season was a bad one for him. It was his best in terms of goals, kicks, HBs and disposals. The discrepancy might also be partly a result of him being used in a different way in the WB structure than at the Lions (I didn't follow him closely at Brisbane so I can't be sure).

However I think it also demonstrates that he has shown a level of ability in the AFL that we didn't get to see fully last year. I'm hopeful we will see more of it this year. It's shaping up as a pivotal year in his development. He's now settled in, added a few kg and is reported to have had a good pre-season so there's every reason to expect him to increase his output in 2019. Time to deliver, Josh!

That is a real worry. It stood out v GC.
Like it or not, Jong is strong in that department.
Also Wallis.
.
Yojimbo where do we rate with contested marking?

Here's our top 10 from last year:

Aaron Naughton 1.50
Easton Wood 1.17
Zaine Cordy 1.00
Timothy English 0.86
Jordan Roughead 0.83
Thomas Boyd 0.75
Bailey Williams 0.71
Josh Schache 0.69
Billy Gowers 0.65
Hayden Crozier 0.59

Take our Roughy and likely Boyd for the year it's not great reading (average per game in brackets). Schache is still a pup though so if he can push his average up to 1 per game that actually ranks quite good for 21-22 year old 200cm players.
English is up there but I'm not sure many/any of his contested marks last year were in the forward line.

May have been before the fitness started, but pretty sure he said he was around the high 90's kg mark at some point of pre-season

@Yojimbo where do we rate with contested marking?
Rather than roll out another boring group of statistics Dogs_R_Us I will show you the progression of contested
marking at the Bulldogs from 2010 to 2018 along with their AFL ranking.

2018: Rank 22 Aaron Naughton 27
2017: Rank 54 Marcus Bontempelli 21
2016: Rank 9 Jordan Roughead 43
2015: Rank 13 Easton Wood 36
2014: Rank 80 Will Minson 13
2013: Rank 10 LIAM JONES 35
2012: Rank 16 Brian Lake 34
2011: Rank 8 LIAM JONES 43
2010: Rank 4 Brian Lake 48

You may have noticed I avoided answering your question and instead went on a shameless
Liam Jones promotion, that is because contested marking is not big at many clubs anymore
it is left to the great ones Jeremy McGovern 66 and Mason Cox 61.

Why does the main forward need to crash packs? Why can't he play in the Nick Riewoldt style?
He can play that role and that's the role I want him to play. Yet if he is the only tall up forward he will be called upon at times to crash the pack and I don't think it his go. He will lose confidence quick therefore in my mind he need another tall to play the crash and bang that role like Cordy.

No Dickson or Cavarra is disappointing.

Surprised Cavarra and Dickson haven’t been given a run. This team looks very unbalanced...
