It was probably a list age profile decision ....Cheney is 30 yo ...it was a call between keeping Otten or Cheney ....Otten gave the list more flexibility

When you look at it No.
For all MacKay's faults, he can play more than one position, he gets the ball more. He tackles more his metre gained he close to double Cheney. but the crunch is he a lot less injury prone.
Otten also plays more than 1 position ruck, KPP both ends of the ground. and gets the ball more.

Cheney would be a nice pick up on the rookie list but I would rather put time into McPherson and maybe Pohokle

His body just can not stand up to the rigours of AFL footy.

85 games in 9 years. An average of 9.4 games per year

Remove 2016 where he played 24 and the average comes down dramatically.

Otten plays both fwd and back...but he's not great at either. You can argue that Cheney gives as much flexibility as he can play equally on talls and smalls

Why would Gold Coast want him?

I like Cheney, would rather he played in front of Kelly but some people are being unrealistic about this, the guy hasn't gotten on the field much in the last few years, which would be a massive red flag for a team short of experience, it is good to have but not in the rehab room.

In saying this, given he is now a DFA, Port will be a snoopin' around because they love themselves a DFA from other teams. If he is picked up by them and does manage 12-14 games he might round off his career with a John Cahill Medal...

The decision to go with "Live Trading" has massively increased the level of uncertainty for players on the fringes. AFL Contracts expire on 31st October (tomorrow), and there are still a ridiculous number of players who haven't been re-signed and haven't been told that they're going to be cut.

It's completely understandable that the clubs won't want to finalise list numbers until they have a reasonable degree of certainty about what draft picks they will be able to use in the National Draft. For example, Adelaide currently has picks #8, #13, #16, #21, #73 and #83. If they cut Cheney, but then do a 2-for-1 pick trade, then they end up being forced to make a selection at #73 - not exactly plan A. On the other hand, if they keep him and a deal doesn't eventuate then they either lose pick #21 or go to a 39/5 list structure, which has TPP implications.

The end result of this is that many clubs have about 30 hours in which to make the final decision... in the meantime, there are a lot of AFL players whose lives are stuck in limbo.

And... no.

The "player request for removal from an AFL list" is a different situation. That's for players who receive an offer from their existing club, but the player wants out and refuses to sign. The last time I remember that being used was back in the mid-1990s, when Scott Camporeale wanted out of Carlton and the Blues refused to trade him.

The Cheney situation is different, in that the AFC didn't offer him a contract for 2019. That meant they had to delist him when his contract expired (tomorrow).

Not sure if anyone else has brought this up yet, but could Cheney being delisted be an early sign of our intentions going into the draft?

It seems to me that our list changes now give the impression that we might be planning to go into the draft fully intending to draft four players using 8, 13, 16 and 21.

I wouldn't be surprised if we sounded out St Kilda and GC over the last week or so and have come to the realisation that a trade is not going to eventuate so we've now moved on Cheney because we're planning to use all four draft picks on draft night.

Will be interesting to see what happens from here.
