What I hate is the simplistic, irrational bullshit that health measures being put in place to protect humans is viewed as an unconstitutional affront to the principles of a free society - what a load of pretentious bullshit.

The only "whiny cowards" there are in the USA are those that are just too f****ng scared of joining the real world where a scientist or a person/persons, who have spent almost their entire lives in a particular field tell them that if you don't heed these warnings and continue to do what you are doing, you will die, the "whiny cowards" are those that distrust anything that professionals tell them and rail against civic minded leaders who attempt to do the right things to preserve the health and well being of the community.

As for not caring about what Trump says to the press, you have to be kidding, don't you? Of course New York is harder to live in than Australia. It's harder to live in than almost all of the US too. As an ex New Yorker the boroughs are by no means a good indicator of life in the US. They're a radical outlier in a very negative way.

Well, no. I think we might be talking about different things here. I'm not talking about the rural vs urban divide; I mean, I grew up on a farm in rural Victoria and spent a decade in Melbourne, and New York is just a continuation of that. There's pros and cons to those lifestyles; yes New York is expensive, but wages are fairly high too so I'm not talking about that. Though, as an Ex New Yorker, I would be interested in hearing about what you found.

But I'm talking about the more systemic things that are fairly universal across the US that makes it a lot tougher to live a comfortable life in.
- lack of employment security (I know not every state is a right to work state, but even those with some rules are a lot softer than Aus.). My employer can fire me for any reason with no notice or compensation, which is a constant source of stress. Last year the company I worked for fired everyone with an hours notice at the end of the month, severing their family's health care the next day.
- Tying health care to employment is a huge problem. It cost over $1k to continue health care on the next month with COBRA for my family, which is the last thing anyone who just lost their job needs. Not just that though; if it wasn't for the need to worry about health care I might have switched over to working on my part time business full time, so it stifles innovation and lowers quality of life in that respect.
- Obamacare is absolutely brutal. They look at your wage for the financial year and then fine you for the months you didn't have health care coverage. When I got my first job, it was 6 months into the year, and they fined me for the first 6 retroactively based on my income on the last 6. Didn't matter that I wasn't allowed to work due to visa restrictions at the time. And didn't matter that we couldn't afford their terrible coverage at the time. The same would have been true in reverse; when I lost my job, it was after 6 months. Had I not been able to get a new job a month later, they would have fined me for the next 6 months based on wages from a job I no longer had.
- When you salary sacrifice in Australia, if you lose your job, you pay taxes on what you had put away and then get to keep your money. In the US they stole all of it from me when I lost my job.
- Add in a lot of student loan debts that are both higher in principle and interest than HECS/HELP, usually between 4-8% P.A, and have to be paid whether or not you are working. Luckily I avoided this.
- Superannuation is not paid for by the employer. I've been working in the US for close to 4 years now and have not been able to put anything aside. In Australia I'd have added an extra 40-50k in that time.


Even the small things are much shitter.
- no guaranteed leave, paid or unpaid
- no guaranteed sick leave. (Can be fired for calling in sick.)
- public holidays don't have to be observed by employers, and no compensation is required for the worker if they don't.
- the typical work day is an hour longer in my field.
- My paternity leave was only 1 week.
- we got a $1500 bill from the hospital after our son was born even though I was 'fully covered'.


America does have its advantages, but overall the quality of life is worse and incredibly stressful for the middle class like me. And god help you if you are lower class.

Living in or outside of NY doesn't change much.
