Taken from the phantom draft trial run:

16: Jackson Paine (Sandringham Dragons) 194cm, 87 kg.

Interesting tall with a lot going for him. He's got the height you want in a genuine kpp, and while he's not Jon Patton, he's already looking like developing a strong body. Hands good above his head, particularly one-out, is perfectly capable of ripping apart a weaker opponent once he gets on top. While I'm not sure about his raw pace, for such a big bloke he is very balanced and turns quickly - he lays a lot of tackles, and a kpf who can do that is like gold these days in the age of forward presses - too often the talls just lumber around helplessly and don't contribute much. Works hard, lots of 1%ers. He's also a surprisingly good crumber, from his own marking or from other people's. Very good bloke to have isolated one-out in the goalsquare while the rest of the defense stresses about keeping an eye on Watts. For all his size (and he'll be a monster when he fills out) in my book he's a smarts and finesse player rather than relentless runner who blows his opponents up or a pure strength/speed lead-mark-shoot type, and as such I think he and Watts will complement each other well.

The other string to his bow is his ability to play as a 'gorilla' defender. He was just exceptional there against VC in the pre-champs trial match, and I reckon this aspect of his game is really underestimated. With a bit of experience he could be a genuine dual-position kpp swingman, and there aren't all that many of them going around.

This is what we need...

HAs the body to stack on the bulk and control the forward 50.

Although i think we'll go small having taken only talls last year and the depth of tall is particularly thin this year.

Our midfield group gets talked up a lot but IMO we need another classy midfielder. Can we get that with a teen pick, not impossible but doubtful.

Would love it if Grimes could play there but everytime he plays there, he gets a LTI.

Grimes will be prob. eased back at HB again next year.

Happy with the mix of Watts, Jurrah, Howe, Cook. In time they will kick winning scores.

Dominant midfield and our forward line will do the business.

Any classy players like '09 Fyfe around?

Can you still draft guys that are only 17 and turn 18 early next year or did AFL change that rule? I only ask because if this years draft is supposedly weak and next years so good we should try and take some of the younger guys in this draft, something hawthorn did a couple of years ago when they picked Shiels & Savage & maybe Breust iirc with later picks cos they were younger and look like bargain picks now

From what i saw in the under 18 carnival i wouldnt suggest Viney is class.

Maybe you have seen some different things to me though.

Seemed very in and under to me, very similar to Scully, far from an classy kick/player.

I hope they test the waters with butcher and maybe even Tom Hawkins if the cats will bite, although I highly doubt the latter

But one of the compo picks for Scully and this years first rounder for Butcher IMO is something we should look at, i think we need to be more aggresive in the market to secure something we NEED

You'd be correct rude, I've never heard anything to indicate that Viney is a 'class' ball user - which is what the original post was referring to I believe.

A great hard at it, in and under type, but not the classy type.

Class isn't just to do with disposal though, it's about running and hand-eye and evasion too. Viney has that down.

I have no doubt if you made him the number 1 forward and went directly through him he could still be a gun at AFL level... Doubt the cats would let him go

Profile: The thing that stands out with McKenzie is his skills by foot, is the absolute feature of his game. Has a great penetrating left foot kick on him and can consistently find targets or kick long goals from 60m out without any difficulty. Even under pressure executes by foot without any difficulty. Not a sensational athlete but makes up for it with his skill level. Seems to have a really good understanding of the game and reads the play well. Inside work is also very good. Was one of SA’s best midfielders in the u18 champs and had a couple of big games. A bit of a flanker but can play midfield. Quality ball user.

He doesn't suffer from anything except shitness, if you can't dominate in the Geelong forward line then you cannot dominate anywhere.

The midfield supply he received was the closest thing to perfection that you could get as a forward, he doesn't have that huge physical advantage that he did in the U/18's and it's showing just how much he relied on it.

Agree with SA - this sounds like the type of player we could use, especially if he has decent leg speed.

I doubt that, he'll get a better defender once Mooney/Podsiadly go and then will get demolished even more.

He's getting the worst defender week in and week out yet produces as close to nothing as possible, his ceiling is Brad Miller.

Someone like that would be perfect for us.

I Would even think about developing Jacky Watts into that position. He will only get bigger, already has the pace and smart

I actually agree with you on this one, but i look at Jack watts and i always have this feeling he would make a better CHB than CHF, he naturally reads the play, but doesnt demand it as much, we have no big fwd so he has to play forward

He has great closing speed, reads the play, good athletic jump for the spoil, and can distrubute the ball forward..

Look all i know is that Wayne Carey said if he had a couple of months to work on some technical things he noticed him doing wrong, he could turn him into a gun forward, so unless Hawkins has a hot missus and Carey wants to do some 1 on 1, im gonna trust his judgement
