cassisi to take goodwin
k cornes to take ricciuto (which may mean he plays defence for most of the game but with no wilson he's our best option)
pearce on mcleod

I'd like to see us play a small foward line with only tredrea the tall option. The crows defence ie bassett, hart and mcgregor (if he plays there) play well aginst tall fowards. Historically players such as wanganeen and peter burgoyne have given hart and co trouble with their pace and ground play.
shaun burgoyne to play in the middle along with chad cornes.

mahoney motlop p burgoyne
pearce tredrea wanganeen
ebert s burgoyne salopek
pettigrew chaplin walsh
k cornes wakelin bishop

1st ruck lade c cornes cassis

interchange deluca, white, thomson,kingsley

Cornes to run with Goodwin everywhere eg. if Goodwin goes off then so does Cornes (see Cornes vs Black 2004 grand final) - no need for cheap possessions Kane just make sure that Goodwin has as little influence on the game as possible.
Cassisi to run with possibly Edwards or Goodwin if Cornes can handle him.

Play possession/keeping's off football if the AFC flood back in our forward 50 then just hang onto the ball & find a target (don't panic just get some of our players out of our F50 & just kick it to a loose man) in otherwords deny the AFC use of the football. Play man on man all over the ground, make sure the forwards work extra hard to keep the ball in our F50, the 1% er's = chase hard, tackle, block etc., Play on when ever possible & take risks as the quicker the ball moves into the F50 the less time the AFC has to get 14 men back there.

Our backline should look have the following players - Chaplin, Wakelin, Chad Cornes, Shaun Burgoyne, Peter Walsh - plenty of run & creativity!

Give the youngsters as much game time as possible especially in the midfield where we need to apply pressure on the AFC with plenty of run (fresh legs)

I wouldn't say the Crows necessarily play the traditional 'flood' with every player pushing back into the defensive 50. From what I've seen, it tends to be a bit more like a footy equivalent of the 'full-court press'. A lot of players push back, but it's much deeper than just in the opposition's forward 50.

Whatever Choco chooses this week is good enough. We're missing a player in every position, so its time to be creative.

If we don't get smacked around by the Crows this week, it'll be the worst game they play this year.

In the 68 minutes that Surjan was on for 12 possessions, what justifies leaving him out of the team when Pettigrew, Chaplin, Cassisi, Motlop etc played poor games and he was solid?

Given that Symes has gone down, your logic seems strange.

From portadelaidefc.com.au

Port coach Mark Williams ended speculation about the possibility of recalling Gavin Wanganeen, Josh Francou and Adam Kingsley this week - Wanganeen after two fitness-finding SANFL matches, Francou and Kingsley after only one - by saying succinctly: "No, they are not ready to play."

We need to have someone tag johncock and our forwards are going to have to work very hard when they dont have the ball if we are going to have any chance.
If roo plays we could use dew on him (assuming both are fit). I watched an old showdown on tape the other day (showdown10 i think) and dew did a reasonably good job on him. One of the few times Ive seen someone outmark and outmuscle roo.

you want to tag a defender?

lets not forget we are missing players left right and centre as well

Bloody oath. Johncock destroys teams with his ability to read and win the loose ball in defense and then set up attacking thrusts.
Perhaps not tag but whoever plays on him must be very accountable even if that means sacrificing their game.
When I worked at footy park I used to tell terry wallace's brother (who was a spy) the same thing about edwards. I couldnt beleive how much they underestimated him.

Let's stop talking about the Cows like they're gods amongst men and start thinking attacking. We can f'n beat this mob.

If port play attacking footy like they did in the second showdown last season and execute their skills properly then Im confident that we can beat them.

Sorry if I talked about the crows too much but johncock is a champ and this thread is about "match up's and team structure against the crows" so it makes it difficult not to mention them.

They are overwhelming favourites with the media and bookies and by building them up it may lull them into a false sense of security so we can knock em off.

i wasnt talking about your post in particular, just about some of the negativity flying around. I've heard people saying that we should consider ourselves lucky if we can escape with anything better than a 10 goal loss...

We have the cattle. If we can get our guys playing as a machine again we will be right up there again, but it's definetely gonna take a bit of time. So far this season it has mostly been our mid-experienced players that have let us down.

Agreed we have the players to match the Crows if all our players fire at once however this seems to rarely happen.

The way the Crows played last week without a number of their "star" performers showed how they are willing to, and capable of, sharing the load. In 2005 and so far this year to many of our players seem to stand back and wait for someone else to lift the side.

I fear a 10 goal plus blow out, but then you never can tell with Showdowns.

If the Crows are switched on they'll win, they are the simple facts.

If port go in with that attitude then the game is already lost.

Consistency is port's big problem and the cows big strength. We seem to be one of the most inconsistent teams in the comp both from week to week and quarter to quarter. I suspect we will match the crows for a half then go totally missing for a quarter and get rolled by a reasonable margin.

After last week you would say so,but I keep looking at our injury list and the eveness of the competition and our draw so far this year and wonder how long we can keep winning for.

Even if it is a tight battle and Port play well, I just cannot seeing us having the polish to get over the line.

We got spanked last week and the Crows belt the top team on the ladder by 12 odd goals. I have to admit, this does not fill me with all that much confidence. Especially if you get Roo and Thompson back.

I'd love to see Motlop and Pearce in the middle full time Vs the Crows. We need grunt, perseverance and speed in there and they are our best at it.

And, anyhow, all the best sides have goal-kicking midfielders -- with those two in the middle, we would too. If we can also have the tag-team (Surjan and Shattock) prowling the back line, at least the game promises to be entertaining.

If fit, Surjan should have been persevered with. :thumbsd:

I'd just about agree with that, but i've been raring to see Shats be given another go. Now he's got it, but unfortunately at Jake's expense.

Look, I am definitely not a Shattock fan - I have made the point before that I can't see one positive attribute to his game and I believe that even his much vaunted toughness is misplaced and doesn't reflect true courage.

However, he is on the list and is fit and now that he is in the side I honestly hope he proves me wrong and is pivotal to us winning.

But, what do the Shattock fans out there expect him to bring to the team?

Pace?
Penetration with disposal?
Rebound?
Hard tackling and chasing?
Discipline?
Marking strength across HB?
Goalkicking option?
Clearances?
Tagging ability?

Please let me know because it may just be that I haven't seen enough of him play to know what to hope for.

Well yeah. I was kinda thinking "He's hasn't played many games - how can people have an attitude against him already?"
