Consider Retirement
Shane WAKELIN - Buckley claimed that as a veteran, your career approached a cliff, injuries begin to grind you and you go from hero to villain very quickly. Possibly only consented to stay on with the surprise retirement of James Clement last season, it'd be more fitting for a man of his calibre to avoid the potential humility of having his spot on the line weekly, ending up in the same ilk as Neitz this season.

On the aspect that Wakelin is older than most - I have to agree.

But, in the case of Buckleys comments about becoming injury prone, Waklin has shown absolutely no sign of becoming someone like this. Neitz has been injury prone for years and personaly (I do not want to open pandoras box with this comment) but Clement was not only becoming injury prone but i thought his form was sub standard towards tyhe end of his career - specifically the 2007 finals series and games leading up to it (not meant to take anything away from Jimmy - a true legend of of club).

Wakelin has 90 - 100% game time every week and I cant remember the last time he was injured, he is obviously at peak fitness and being injury prone you cannot put in the same sentence as Shane Wakelin.

After all of that... I know jimmy has said this will probably be his last year (but he added) but we'll see how we go.

As Wakelin was omitted last week for "team balance" - (personally I think was a bad decision), my signature of "Wakelin to play every game in 08" has now been changed.

P.S:- Wakelin is still under rated and his on field performance this year and the role of leading our backline has still not given him the kudo's he deserves.

Can't take an overhead mark?
Hasn't played many good games?
No physical presence?
Can't play forward?
Slow reflexes?

I think these videos would beg to differ..... (& yes, one might be a highlights video of his time at this great club bt it just goes to show that he isn't as useless as what some of us may want to think.)

So what, he isn't perfect every single week..... We shouldn't be expecting him to be.[/FONT]

Just after watching that first video - collingwood would be mad not to play Fraser on the forward line until Rocca returns.

Nice work MagpieGirl

Rubbish.

If fit for the Swans game Josh will play a vital role in the win.

I agree with you Magpie Girl and thanks for the linked videos.

Anyone with a brain watching those videos would be mad to even think of trading such a skilled and talented player.

And an earlier comment on learning from the Tarrant trade... Tarrant was not traded because of lack of skills

Go Josh

Ok, ye with all the brains, just tell me about the great games Fraser has played in the last 5 years. It's pointless having skills and talent if you don't perform. The guy is 26 or 27 and should be in the form of his career, yet of the 11 games he has played this year, only one of them has been good.

He was dreadful last year as well. Do you remember the MCG game against Port. Brendon Lade destroyed him. 10 votes from the coaches on Footy Classified. That's a dreadful return from a seasoned player. Chris Bryan, with all his deficiencies has been a better player for us this year. Cameron Wood will quickly go past him as well. Although he, like Fraser, lacks physical presence, he is a better mark, better tap ruckman and better kick.

Fraser is still coming to terms with the fact that he does not have to carry the ruck single handedly every week. He will deliver in the long term.
I have always rated him and still do.
I would argue that I am not alone in this appraisal....I think the club has a similar opinion.

Bryan is a no brainer and has already booked his place on the list next year. When you have 3 ruckman on the list it's ludicrous to suggest cutting one that's performing at a decent level and play regular seniors.
Was that a community service announcement? Because if it wasn't, it was still absolutely spot-on and prevented me having to type the same thing. :thumbsu:

Did you watch this afternoon's game? The guy is a clearance machine.
No, I didn't. Good on him if he played well though. Hope he can break through, I'd prefer to see him stay rather than leave.

And an earlier comment on learning from the Tarrant trade... Tarrant was not traded because of lack of skills

Tarrant was far more skilled (technically & Physically) than Fraser, but it didn't stop him contributing less than he should have to the team.

I could piece together a highlight reel of Tarrant that would make him look like the greatest footballer of all time......but its irrelevant, he was too inconsistent and just didn't assert himself on enough games of footy, much like Josh Fraser.

My point was that we shouldn't tolerate mediocre players living off their brand name when we could possibly secure another Medhurst type trade.

Fraser is still coming to terms with the fact that he does not have to carry the ruck single handedly every week. He will deliver in the long term.

The old excuse people made for Fraser was that he had to carry the ruck duties on his own. Now your saying that he's coming to terms with not having to ruck on his own.....seriously?

Why doesn't Fraser ever plug the hole in defence like we see Bryan do? Because he is too scared, he never is expected to do the hard things like any other player.

I wasn't the biggest Bryan fan, but you notice the difference when our ruckman actually takes contested marks in defence, something Josh just doesn't have the balls for.

And of course the club clings to him for dear life, he is a multi-million dollar investment, and not the best one they have made by any stretch.

RETIRE: waklin presti.
waklin: should go out on a good note his been a quality player and should leave the game on a good note.
presti: is gone. even if he was fit i dont think he would get a game in the AFL mainly because to go forward we have to play the kids in his position.

DELIST:holland, stanley, lonie, lies.
the game has past lonie and holland both should retire before getting delisted.
and as for stanley and lies they just seem to be good VFL players and not good AFL players. they keep on poping up for AFL selection but when they get their chance they look 2nd rate.

TRY TO TRADE THEN DELIST IF NOT TRADED: cook, cox.
i think we might be able to trade cox to a WA team. word is he wants to go home.
and cook i wouldnt mind holding onto cose i think he just might be a late bloomer. but saying that he is taking up a spot on the senior list and has already had 3 years. and with such a deep draft he might be a casilty. hopefully u finds another home but.

thats 8 players gone. we need what 3 for the draft.
then elevate wellingham (his still a rookie listed player isnt he) and give Macaffer a go on the senior list. thats 5 gone.
i think we should get cousins. would be slot into our midfeild nicely. mick knows him well and he would be good to help develop players like pendlebury and thomas as well at teach the older guys like davis a few things.

now inless my calculation are wrong which they prob are that would leave us 1 player short so then we should either redraft either cook or cox. preferably cook as i said earlier i think he might be a late bloomer, if we dont trade him and give one of them a 2nd chance or use an extra pick in one of the drafts.

There is a bit of a push on here at the moment to get rid of Fraser. So lets take the logic of that a bit further and put Medhurst up for trade. Plenty of clubs would be interested in offering trade picks and we could....oh i dont know.... use one of these draft picks to pick up a Paul Medhurst type player. If it aint broken, dont fix it.

By Medhurst Type trade I am talking about the end result. Not the type of player.

Look at the trade value of Medhurst compared to Tarrant currently, that should give you an idea of what I mean by "medhurst type trade".

It's about making the decision that a certain player is never going to be the player everyone thought him or her was going to be. (i.e Fraser). Throwing that player on the table, and seeing if we can get a more productive outcome. Not just for the club but for the player as well.

Bryant and Cam Cloke is an example of this thinking as well, although Bryan has a lot to do before it can be declared a Medhurst type trade.

I'd think Lonie is gone. Holland should be too, but if gets back in the team, he could safe his position.

I think Prestie has been out for too long, and too be honest, I don't think he's up to it anyhow. I'd certainly play Wakes above Prestie if had to chose.

I think Egan might be kept on next season, purely because others in the team are far worse off. (Kind of like Woewodin and O'Bree...that year Woey was cut, O'Bree got the kick he needed) so hopefully Egan will to.

At this point in the season, from what I've seen, we could cope without Frase too. Bryan and Wood have been good enough, but I would only trade Fraser for a scenario that involved a J. Brown or similar big name/game player.

Look, they only just signed up Fraser for 3 more years at the end of last season so all this talk of trading him is a waste of time. It is not going to happen. Deal with it folks!
