List Mgmt. Mitch Duncan re-signs until 2024

He's turned his back on FA and hopefully the annual talk of him returning to Perth can cease with Duncan signing a 4-year contract extention - more than the suggested 3-year offer that was apparently on the table:

Geelong is delighted to announce the contract extension of Mitch Duncan until the end of the 2024 season.

Duncan has spent his entire 203 game career with the Cats having been drafted following the 2009 season. He was a member of the Cats 2011 premiership team and has been a critical member of the team over the past 10 years.

“The club is delighted to see Mitch commit to the club,” Geelong’s General Manager of Football Simon Lloyd said.

“Mitch has been a mainstay of our team over 10 seasons, a dependable, intelligent teammate and a quality player.

“Our members and supporters have watched Mitch’s career unfold and we all look forward to it continuing over the next five seasons.”

Don't like a 5 year deal for a 28 year old non structural player

It's not a 5-yr deal

Duncan's already signed for next year and he's signed a new 4-year deal

Depends on the amount, all the talk was a three year extension. It could be an extra year with less guaranteed amount per year.

He he. Not in this goldfish bowl.
I know - did like reading this though on an article about how Hawkins is likely to be the next signing. Seems pretty clear he's got minimal interest in returning to Perth any time soon:

The on-baller and his wife Demi are expecting their second child and he has resisted the lure of WA to recommit long-term.

Duncan was set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of next year.

He is understood to have rebuffed offers from the two WA clubs throughout his career.

He is now signed for 5 years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024.

That's too long for a 28 year old B+ player that doesn't play a structural role.

So, if the club waited until August 2020 to sign him to this same 4-year deal, would that be ok as it's closer to the end of his current contract that's about to end?

Would it make things clearer that it's only 4 more years he's signed on for because he was always wearing the hoops in 2020

And he's better than a B+ player, one who was clearly missed during the finals after he went down with injury - not sure why some try to sell him short.

And considering we saw during the finals how much we missed his outside run and work on the wings - could almost argue that he does play a structural role for us & one that's not easily replaced based on our current list

Good result for Duncan, and hopefully a good result for the club.
I err on the side of caution doing these long deals on +28yo's.
Hopefully it works out for the best, and hopefully the club has some solid career-ending injury payout clauses in a worst case scenario for risk management purposes. He has been pretty reliable to date, so we've seen with some good players that so long as they don't lose their running capacity they still play solid footy to age 33, Eg. Scarlo, Enright, Mackie, etc. Age 33 seems to be a cut-off point for those injury resistant solid players that generally have a good running capacity.

No it wouldn't be ok! He would still be 33 in the last year of the deal either way. No need too sign him up beyond 2022, then one year deals from there if his football demands it. If he chose to exercise FA instead, then wish him the best of luck, he is not a structurally important player so we should not excessively handcuff ourselves to him with a 5 year contract.

Glad to see Duncan sign on, think his value to the team is very much unnoticed and is always involved int major transitions of play from one end to the other.

But currently he is structurally important to the team

When we lost him during the finals we had no obvious replacement to step into his role & play on the wing - and at this stage that still hasn't changed going into the 2020. That right there is why he's structurally important to the team

Just because he isn't a ruck, key forward or key defender doesn't mean he isn't structurally important to our team

The wing isn't even a defined position these days. It was a positive he was missing for the finals as he drifts back and is a panic merchant coming out of the D50 when the pressure is on. One of the biggest culprits in our September disappearing acts under Scott.
Mitch Robinson would like to respectfully disagree (edit: that the wing is not a well defined or structurally important position)

I like him as a player but christ he needs to pull his finger out in September, Menegola impressed me this year in finals, so it's possible to turn it round...
Mitch as it stands is our most high profile front runner... Let's hope for our sake that changes

It was defined well enough when our full back was slowing down all our attacks playing there this September... Would take four years of a 33 year old Duncan playing there if it meant never seeing that again

Bingo.

Also keep in mind that it's possible the extra contract length is giving him the security of a longer contract in exchange for acceptance of a lower base wage that could allow us to target a big fish next year. Recall Richmond doing that to fit Tom Lynch in last year.
