Before I reveal to votes for the finals series, which will determine our Toots Hibbert medallist, I would like to announce the captain's award for season 30. Honestly - it could have gone to any one of a number of people: such has been the extraordinary calibre of my team mates. But in the end, I couldn't go past my right hand man and number 1 drinking buddy, jackster83. Jackster has been a wonderful vice captain of this club in season 30, and I hope he intends to continue in the role in season 31, as his support has been invaluable on numerous occasions. Thanks mate!!!!!!!!

Qualifying final vs Furies by Ant Bear
Going into the first final on a three game losing streak might not have been ideal, but best to get those losses out of the way before finals, hey? Anyway, we finished third, giving the home ground advantage to the anthropomorphic animals, with whom we had split our two minor round meetings. It was a quietish thread, where we were led by philreich with 47 posts and Ant Bear with 37, but had solid contributions from GotTheGoodes, jackster83, SarahSmiles and ant555, among 14 posters for the week.
It proved to be a tight tussle. We started slowly, conceding the first 2 goals and not registering a shot until the 14th minute when Rich the babe Evans slotted one home, but we held firm in defence with Far Kern and jackster83 winning their positions, to only trail by 3 points art first change. ant555 and GremioPower both goaled in the second term to reverse the margin at the half but were both to finish the day in defence, as a raft of changes saw finals specialist sataris score 3 of his 4 goals in the third term as we broke the game open. The Furies were dis-spirited by the 4 goal ¾ time margin, and RTBE finished what he started with 2 final term daggers as we romped away to a 42 point win. Best players were Rich the babe Evans, with 21 disposals and 3 goals, and GotTheGoodes witth 22 disposals, whilst sataris was the matchwinning forward with 4 goals. It earned us a week off, as we watched the Roys and Gumbies slug it out.

Preliminary final vs Gumbies by Ant Bear
The best thing about playing the Gumbies is…uh, anyone? We had played them once in S30, in round 15 and gone down by 26 points, so revenge would taste sweet, like pineapple. Which was the main point of the thread – pineapple. SFA banter has come full circle. However, it was generally a fun thread, with philreich and the rest of the LG leading the way. Phil cracked the ton to be the dominant poster on either team, and jackster83, SarahSmiles, GotTheGoodes and GremioPower ensured that the Gumbots did not have things all their own way. 19 Swamprats contributed, including a return by MannumPower, in a portent of days to come…
The game followed a familiar pattern – tight and tough in the first half, before we put our foot down hard in the premiership quarter to set up the victory. We led narrowly at the first change, as the team was thrown around, and withstood all that the Gumbies could throw at us with their little plasticine arms in the second term. Then Rich the babe Evans took control, with 3 third term goals, and we capitalised on the momentum with a 5 goal final term to seal the win. SarahSmiles had two early goals before being benched with a “mystery ailment” (Gumbyitis, wink) which also infected philreich inside the first minute; however, our fearless skipper bravely returned to replace SS and finished with a couple of goals himself. Our main threats to the sticks were flankers Sparkle and GremioPower, but the impetus for our victory again came from rucker Rich the babe Evans, with 12 hitouts, 23 disposals and 3 goals. Rookie @projecttv came off the bench to record 30 disposals, and the centreline of Power Raid, GotTheGoodes and Ant Bear all amassed 20+ possessions.
Another Grand Final awaited us, our 3rd in 4 seasons, against novices the Gold City Royals. It seemed inevitable that another premiership was on the cards for the mighty Swamprats!

Grand final vs Royals by Ant Bear
For a team that had never won a Preliminary Final, boy - those Royals were cocky! I suppose they had good reason; they were minor premiers and had beaten us in both regular season fixtures, but we had the finals experience, and the thing about qooty is that it is monumentally difficult to lose against the same opponent three times in a row. Right?
Selection for the big dance caused some controversy, as club champion MannumPower demanded his place with a mighty posting performance that eventually squeezed former captain Far Kern out of the lineup. He earned himself the mighty task of quelling the Royals skipper and Fred Medallist The Filth Wizard, and acquitted himself well. The result was not on him. Again, 19 Rats joined in what was a good thread, though not on par with either the @25 or S27 GF threads. Again, we were led by philreich and the LG. GremioPower gave his greatest posting performance with 86 posts, SarahSmiles and jackster83 participated enthusiastically and Mobbs Medallists MannumPower and Nunez were typically cutting as we dominated the thread against a strong posting unit. The future looks as bright as the past with the core posting unit of this great club!
The game, of course, did not go as planned. We never led, as the Royals piled on 7 goals without a miss in the first, and surfed that wave of confidence all the way to their maiden premiership. We were brave until the end, but never got close enough to have hope, as we went down by 33 points. The early replacement of talisman Rich the babe Evans was symbolic, and it was hard to find a winner other than Nunez, who won the Deestroy Medal on a well-beaten team with 18 disposals, 9 tackles and 2 goals. akkaps saw plenty of the ball in defence, and ant555 battled hard, but most of our work came when the game was gone. It is difficult to begrudge a team their fairytale, however, and all congratulations go to the Royals on a dominant season and deserved flag.
