whether its confirmed or not is beside the point...

even joking about someone getting attacked by a shark isnt funny...

Actually I disagree. Australians can joke about anything.

It doesn't make me think any less of CE. Not that that was ever possible. ;)

No, West Coast doesnt interest me, sharks are too big, waves are too big and the locals are too big :)

Prefer going to Yorkes.

Anyway back on topic, anyone heard anything more? My mum mentioned that there was a report of there being 2 sharks?

Ten news reported that they are searching for "remains" as well as "sharkS".
I feel sick. The poor guy.... :(

It has been very common the last few years for sharks to be up and down the adelaide metropolitan coastline, mainly grey nurses, and especially around the west beach area (where the torren's joins the sea) as that's where all the fish are to play. But I haven't heard of a great white being this close, they normally like things much deeper.

Condolences to the family and friends

Evidently the attack happened 300m off-shore. I really feel for the poor guys' friends, who witnessed the whole thing. Don't know how you ever get over something like that.

sincere condolences to family and friends of the victim

I agree, no subject should be taboo when it comes to taking the P. It's normally not a bad idea to wait a couple of days though just in case someone you know is affected.

Gee...scary

My concern is that the media will whip this up into a moral panic about big evil sharks (probably try and link great whites to Al Qaeda of JI), and then you'll get people out in droves trying to hunt down the sharks that did this. What this does remind me of is that the sea is the sharks native habitat (we're the ones pumping raw sewerage into it), and they can attack at anytime for any reason. We have to be so careful when going into the water.

Condolences to the family.

agree brucetiki - it is a very sad thing to lose a loved one, but it is a fact that the natural habitat for a shark is the sea, we are destroying their food source by over fishing so they are coming closer into shore to find food to survive. I think the statistic is that more people are killed by donkeys per year than sharks but there will be a huge beat up and a hue and cry to catch this 'killer' and destroy it. It is only doing what comes natural to it. I just hope that some sanity prevails amongst the media but it won't

I just feel sick in the guts about this, I have been in the water my whole life and plan to continue even after this but it just makes you wonder doesn it.

who would of thought West Beach would be the scene of such a terrible incident. I usually go down south, and to be honest it is always in the back of my mind, I was in the water when Greg Anderson was bitten but that is the closest I have ever come.

I just feel so bad for his parents, family but most of all his mates who were there with him, as Portenous said, how can you get over something like this?

I just cant believe it, I will head down to West Beach tomorrow I think, just to witness what is happening and to see who is braving the water, I think I might even go for a dip just to show I am not afraid. I do not want this creature killed, as others have said, it was just doing what comes naturally.

I like a laugh probably more than the next bloke but I cannot see the funny side in this at all. This kid was 18 or something and he has lost his life in one of the most violent ways imaginable 2 weeks before Christmas witnessed by his mates, how can anyone see the funny side in this?

My best wishes go towards the family and his friends.

Commiserations to the family of the Yorke Peninsula lad

Who of us oldies thought of ''big fred'' who terrorised Glenelg and further south in the 70s?

i thought of my mates and family friends that have been taken over the past 20 years on the west coast. it is really hard to deal with. I feel for all people involved.

my sense of bigfooty humour aside, please -

yes, i saw it last night on various channels & this will be worldwide news.

it is a very sad & horrific incident - a nightmare becoming reality.

those poor blokes just having innocent fun in the sun. my thoughts go out to those young fellas & all that know them & the victim in particular.

further, i would hate to see these 2 magnificent creatures hunted down. we all have to acknowledge the fact that it is their back yard & that from time to time (very rarely) these incidents will continue happen when humans swim in their oceans.

The Great White will eat most anything, but its preferred meal is the sea lion. So it will always be to some extent a coastal predator, over fishing or not. Therefore its feeding range will overlap with people.

The issue is they are protected and have been for a while, so there's more of them and they are growing to a decent size. As you say, and it is agreed by shark experts, it is unusual for a person to be taken and even moreso by two GWs at once. And unfortunately, while we bring in legislation to protect the sharks, we do little to nothing to protect the security of swimmers at our beaches.

So I'm going to buck the trend of the hand wringing sensitive new age post modernists and say those sharks should be hunted down and killed. It's agreed they've displayed aberrant behaviour even among sharks and once they know we're an easy snack to be had, well ...

Tell me, if you were a parent of one of the kids that'll be in the international sailing regatta at West Beach next week, how would you be feeling right now?

Senior Govt officials (including the Deputy Premier) are meeting with Emergency Services people to discuss whether they should kill these sharks. (meeting started at 9am.)

Apparently the big one has been circling search and rescue craft out from the Grange Jetty all morning. They reckon it's at least 18 feet long and wider than the boat.

Apparently there is a pontoon moored out there (from Grange Beach) - and they say it is longer than the pontoon.

Clearly it is hanging around.

Hopefully they consult with Shark experts before they make a decision on what to do - but if it hangs around - it wont surprise me if they enact the hunt and destroy legislation.
