Thoughts on your club throwing him a life line. For the sake of the discussion he will only nominate if he’s given the all clear. From all reports he’s flying and fitter than ever.

Are concussions more likely to repeat? Is this a physical thing or just his game style?

Why do people have this line of thinking?

He wouldn't be doing this if he wasn't cleared by doctors.
The doctors would've cleared him after his 7th concussion, doesn't mean it's a good idea to keep going.

It's scary hearing about the long lasting symptoms he's experienced so far. “I can’t do stuff - I can’t go to the supermarket when it’s busy or go to a cafe with my girlfriend, or drive my car" he said.

Based on information that I've heard on SEN from Garry Lyon, the doctors have given McCartin the 100% all clear to return to Footy a few months back & he would be playing in a local competition this year if there was footy in Melbourne.

IF St. Kilda is interested in having him back (possibly to replace Ryder in the FWD line when Ryder retires/is injured), I think that's the first place he will go considering his friendships within the club & a sense of loyalty.

If not I suspect Geelong or Sydney are the two most likely places to come knocking regarding his services.

It's important to note that he will be able to sign with any club of his choosing (the same as a Delisted Free Agent) according to AFL.com.au reports last October.

I was always disgusted St Kilda didnt get a compensation pick in the draft over this, so in this case I think St Kilda should get a free crack at adding him onto the list via delisted free agency and it should be outside the teams list and classed a secondary list player like the internatoionals are

Because he has had almost 10 concussions?

Evidence for CTE is very clear.

If he had one or two I would understand.

Sometimes you need to give away something that you love if it's not good for your health!

I'm guessing the doctors and specialists he works with have a far greater understanding of his prospects than either you or I and he wouldn't be doing this otherwise.

Why should St Kilda be compensated because their player retired due to injury?

Although I do agree with being able to list him as priority if he agrees.

Yeah I think it’s just unfortunate and no different to the poor blokes that do a knee 2-3 times and are then cut.

All just the luck of the draw

Probably, but I don't think I'm naive to it entirely.

I'm the manager of a GEM unit and it's a large part of my job to work with people suffering from various forms of dementia or brain damage, perform cognitive assessments and to help help determine if a person has the capacity to make decisions around their lifestyle, finances, medical needs etc.

At the end of the day you can still have the capacity to make poor decisions for yourself. We call this 'dignity of risk' and essentially it means that if a person understands and has the ability to decide then they can be free to make a bad decision (IE. you can lead a horse to water...).

I would be confident in guessing that any competent specialist would advise him to quit now while he is somewhat ahead. Whether or not he listens is another story - hence why I said 'look after yourself'.

Why should Gold Coast be compensated because they are ******* shithouse?

Im much more comfortable with teams getting compensation for players who medically retire then giving some team a pick because they are useless at drafting for example

It will be over 2 1/2 years since his last AFL game by the time next season starts, and honestly, he wasn't that great the last time he played.

Career averages of 9.06 disposals, 4.54 marks (1.20 contested), and 0.97 goals per game aren't exactly exciting (admittedly, on just 70.66% gametime, but that's an issue in itself), even before you take into account his various health and fitness challenges (diabetes, numerous concussions, post-concussion symptoms, weight, lack of endurance).

I wish the guy all the best in his future, but the only reason it's a discussion is because of what he did as a junior back in 2014, right? Nobody seriously thinks at this point that he can be an effective AFL footballer, do they?

He should think about his future quality of life and stay away from football. Wish him all the best but not everyone is cut out for professional footballl.

Well said. I reckon his best game was against you guys, but he broke his collarbone during the match. If you look at how he got his last concussion, it's clear he shouldn't play again. When I watched that hit, I thought he went to the bench winded. It wasn't a massive knock, yet it took him months to get over it.

If he insists on having a crack at playing footy again, I hope it's not at the Saints. I can just see in 20 years time a massive lawsuit coming towards the Saints for letting him have 8 concussions. 8 concussions from 35 games (his last concussion was in a practice match, though). If someone offered you 25% odds on getting a life altering brain injury, would you take it?

I'll say the same as I said about picken when he went through similar a couple of years ago.
The only one that can make the decision is paddy and his family, luckily they have access to quality Drs to do all available testing to form the basis of their decision.
However if it were me or if it was my son in the situation I can easily say what my choice would be.
