Brownlow Patrick Cripps - 2022 Brownlow Medallist

True but they are putting themselves in a position to win it every year. Not meaning to jump on the bandwagon of sticking the boots into Carlton here but there is some serious talent on that list wasting their prime years for a chance to get on a run like Bulldogs 2016. To say that not making finals is as acceptable as making finals sounds salty and would be refuted by every AFL player and coach past and present.

I agree our time is now.

Luckily all our main players have plenty of footy left in them, we should be in flag contention from 2023 onwards.

You put yourself in a position every year by competing in the comp.

The reality is the majority of teams don't get close, and it's only a matter what order teams are going to shown up.

Bulldogs 2016 was a complete anomaly. No other side since the Crows in the 90's have won a flag from outside of the 8, and the Bluebaggers weren't about to reverse 30 years of history.

Bulldogs made finals 2016. They were first side to win outside top 4 since Crows.

I once met Rocket Eade and genuinely couldn't understand a word coming from his mouth. I don't think these blokes know much. The umpires on the other hand, they've studied the games rules for much of their lives, they are dedicated individuals who have shown to have expertise in the game. They don't come from nepotism and actually had to show competence for their roles. The know what they're talking about. Head coaches are simply there for supporters to throw blame on, no other reason.

“******* run will run!!”

Eade was easy to understand

You've clearly skim read. I'm not salty at all. I get annoyed that each year people get angry at the results when clearly it's a flawed award that I stopped caring about many years ago.

Yeah cripps is a good player but winning last night hasn't changed my opinion of him just as my opinion of Ollie Wines didn't change just because he won it. When Wines retires he'll still be a guy that was slow, had average skills and peaked in his career to be about a top 20 player.

Oliver had a much better year. And like I said if Cripps was playing for Melbourne he'd just be another midfielder getting 14-15 votes.
Like i said kiddo sour grapes.

Only one team can win the flag mate.

Scraping over who the better losers are is all a bit ho hum for mine.

I don’t agree with the view that aside from winning a flag that there’s no difference between 2nd and 18th.

Of course premierships are the ultimate goal but there is a lot of enjoyment to be taken out of everything else, otherwise why bother even watching anything unless your team is in a GF?

In terms of winning flags, which is the currency for success in the AFL, there's no difference.

You're correct though, there is a spectrum for wins and losses and if your side is doing well in the Home & Away season you're going to have a better time.

Ultimately I can't see a major distinction between finishing in the middle of the ladder within the 8 or outside of it.

Incorrect. The Brownlow got surpassed by the Coaches votes years ago.
Must be why they televise the reading of the coaches votes at a huge formal function :tearsofjoy:

Seriously though, I know what you're saying - I too would rate the coaches (and players) choices over the umpires. But the Brownlow is indeed the sport's highest individual honour and most prestigious, thats just a fact. And not likely to change any time soon.

The weirdest thing was the AFL chairman opening up his speech to congratulate Cripps with an arse kiss to Joel Selwood. Made no sense and really disrespectful.
Was very on brand for goyder and Gil's time at the helm, clearly operating in different realities than the fans (=customers) they are meant to serve.

is it though? What makes it the highest individual honour? Because they dress up and have dinner at Crown and put it on TV?

You can fluke a Brownlow, you can't fluke a coaches award.

Agreed. this was absolutely mind boggling. Killed the momentum of the night. Just after a thrilling 1 vote win, we're then listening to some old codger talking about Joel Selwood being a captain. what on earth.

Also what was the random Jack Gunston thing that happened in the middle of the count? Gill referencing a death in Jack's family or something? I was bloody confused .

Mate you've been confused all day.

Of course you can - how did Dan Hannebery win it over Fyfe in 2015?

How did Pendlebury win it over Ablett in 2013? (Gray over Ablett in 2014?)

Goodwin over Buckley in 2006?

There's variables in all awards, the award with the highest value will usually be determined by how well your guy polls.

How about anything in the lat 7 years mate lol. The award has been gathering ground and respect exponentially for several years. In another 5 years time, people will say exactly what I'm saying and the Brownlow will be an after thought. If not already.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dunstall and Doug Hawkins at the Adelaide casino. There was a 3rd big name there but I was drunk out of my skull. I went up to Dunstall and said "Jason!" He ignored me. So I yelled "JASON!!!". So he turned his back to me. So I said ""Dougieee" and he ignored me. So I yelled "DOUGIEEEEE!!!". Then the trio formed a little triangle and blocked me so I waddled off lol.
