Pendles stepping down ahead of 2023 season

Great player and Captain.
Pity he had to endure the Buckley coaching years as he may well be a Premiership Captain by now.
Hope he gets the 400 and hope he sticks around to impart his wisdom to the up and coming players.
Will be an ideal line coach when his playing days are over.

Champ champ champ, Onya Pendles.
Yep not interested in the successor at the present moment, a thorough and absolute professional in every aspect of the term that it's possible to image.

Thanks for you leadership, professionalism and passion Pendles and I hope you make the 400 mark.
Why does Crisp always seem to be overlooked when this conversation happens?

I was all for Adams a couple years ago think he needs to work on getting the body right and playing more football.
Why are people talking about his successor when the ink isn't yet dry on the announcement that he is stepping down.

Forget the successor for a day or two at least and celebrate a stellar and storied career as captain.

Crisp is not in the Leadership Group

He's already expressed his desire to coach elsewhere, and frankly I don't blame him. Too much pressure on being the favourite son coaching the team.

Could be a short term captain to then pass it on to someone who is not quite ready. Scotty Burns did a great job between bucks and Maxi. So many people forget how good Scotty was as a leader and footballer.

I think it will be Darcy but if it’s Adams them it’s probably a short term thing for Bruzzy or even Nick. Don’t rule out Crisp he’d make a great captain.

Just looked up the meaning of ”superlative“ in the Dictionary and every single example describes Pendles perfectly.
It’s one of those moments that you know is coming but still leaves you lost for words. Absolute legend of the club, a remarkable career and a player we will never see the likes of again across the league.
Thank you for your captaincy Scott Pendlebury.

Well I wasn’t advocating head coach. Not sure he is that good.
But a line coach or a specialist coach? For sure.
And might be a waste to see him coaching anything elsewhere.

If you want a one year Captain, then the number 22 springs to mind.

Hey guys, anyone made a joke about Pendles stepping aside so Nick Daicos can take the captain role?

Gutted he won't get to join the elusive premiership captain group, but he is nonetheless up there with the best of them. Provided excellent, steady leadership for the longest of periods in a time with some significant tumult within the club. Onto the all-time games record we march!

Part of me loves the idea of Maynard as the next captain, but another part of me fears that it may accidentally serve to hold his aggression and tenacity back (based on nothing whatsoever, just Collingwood-induced paranoia). Moore is my top pick

I wish Pendles was a little more selfish... one more season in charge would have taken him to second on the all-time list, two would have got him past the head ducker as well.

Most VFL/AFL games as captain/co-captain

245 – Joel Selwood (Geelong)
226 – Stephen Kernahan (Carlton)
224 – Dick Reynolds (Essendon)
221 – Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda)
212 – Ted Whitten (Footscray)
210 – Michael Voss (Brisbane)
206 – Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood)

The Burns captaincy was a necessity with Clement retiring unexpectedly alongside Buckley. We have enough options currently that a one year style handover isn’t required.

Do we go a 2-3 year captain like Adams or 4-5 year option like Moore or Maynard? I’d go the second option as it lends itself to the new era spoken about by Pendlebury and while I don’t believe it will be a factor in the appointment it also puts us in a good position for one of the 2020-21 draftees to take up the post as they come into their prime at 24-25 years old.

Would have great to see Pendlebury go past Duckwood. If Pendlebury’s decision extends his career or helps with the next captain it’s a win though.

Well done,Pendles on your great tenure as a Collingwood captain. You’ve been one of the best and most respected Collingwood captains I’ve ever seen.I just hope the boys can do the right thing by you and give you another premiership before you hang up the boots for good.

Well, this was quite the shock!

Thought Pendles would keep the job until he retired. I wonder why he wanted to move aside. He might be earmarked for a lot more time in defence and less in the engine room. If so, then perhaps we will see Crispy spend 100% game time as a midfielder.

Which leads me to my next prediction that Jack Crisp will be our next captain. He is my choice as he represents the future of how we want to play. Fast, aggressive ball movement and nobody at Collingwood does it better than him. He is the one to lead our midfield group to a flag, he is the one to drive on field standards. I wouldn't give it to anyone else. He is also our reigning dual Copeland Trophy winner in case anyone has forgotten.
