Review QF: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

2 moments last night where we had the momentum.

1) Mason Cox just gifted Filthy a goal, then Filthy intercepts a kick down the line. He goes inboard, turnover, Collingwood kick the next 7 goals either side of half time.
2) Filthy running into an open goal inexplicably handballs it off. Would have made the margin 12 points.

Now I'm not blaming Riley, his goal just before 3/4 time was a great kick, and we were pretty atrocious last night as a whole. But those 2 moments just sucked the life out of the crowd and the boys dropped their heads.

The problem is that a lot of our senior players were playing this dumb football
I've spent today trying to figure out this season worst disaster.

I strongly believe it's a 100% coaching responsibility and all blame should be directed there.

We lost our last game against the Pies in all facets except the scoreboard. We'd heard from every commentator in the world about our inside 50 discrepancy and how we held poor field position for most of the match.

Given this, our knuckle head coach has focussed so strongly on 'just move the ball forward' he created a disastrous hack it forward mentality.

We had so little poise across the entire team, blaming the nerves of inexperience is a weak cop out. We must have had half our team have their season worst game with the entire midfield reminding me of recent seasons of blind hack kicks and schoolboy panic. Maybe the midfield coach should be given a proper 'please explain '. Their delivery into the forwards was absolutely s###house. Just long bomb hail Mary's which, thanks to nicks needing a guide dog, fed directly into the plan of the team who had an excellent intercept player just waiting.

How nicks took so long to notice that Darcy Moore was 'a bit of a problem ' is sheer incompetence. Or maybe it was sheer arrogance to not change his plan. Or maybe it was his rigidity of thought which paralysed him.

Either way, I think this game reeks of our first 4 games of 2024 when knuckle head 'had an idea'. He ruined a season with his error of thought.

Last night, HE DID IT AGAIN.

IMO

Moore’s effort was a finals record
We ensured he was BOG... by just bombing it to him without looking most of the time.

We haven’t seen this since earlier in the season, but saved this losing playbook to 1st final with a lack of composure.

The fact the coaches didn’t correct it is unexplainable. Would have been my 1st question to Nicks.

Do you think this was a rogue bonkers moment or the Nicks norm? Has Wayne commented about the coaching?

The PC police is out in force. Telling supporters what they can and cant do.

On GF Day and we play collingwood, is McRae going to say anything about Collingwood supporters booing Rankine, 100% not. Its all hypocritical bullshit and the media jumping on this needs to have a good hard think about how it will look when Rankine plays his first game. Are they going to say dont boo or they going to be shitting themselves about looking like they are soft on homophobia. Beware the double edged sword of hypocrisy and all these idiots piling on the AFC Crowd need to seriously have a good think.

Yep, would be interesting to hear from the Nicks cheerleaders, just one of them would do

The worst thing for me is how many of our players now have question marks over their head in terms of can you stand up when it matters most ...... In finals.

Basically every player in leadership group didn't perform to their average performance.

I understand it's your first final but this is why you play football you should want to give it everything

Tex ANB and Laird stood up they have finals experience the only players without finals experience that played to the best of their ability was Worrell and Pedlar.

A lot of players didn't play well, a concerning amount, if you can't get up for a home qualifying final and a club legends 300th then what the Bloody hell will??

Finals aren't easy they never will be but you actually have to crave the pressure and the moment not just sit around and hope someone else does

It’s hilarious how Collingwood fans sit on their moral high chair outraged at the booing. But conveniently forget their own history with booing…

Maybe players had their worst game because they struggled to buy into a defense first game plan when we have one of the most efficient attacking game plans at our disposal. Just another bit of evidence Nicks is a reactive coach moreso than a proactive coach.

For me, selections handicapped us, and then McRae finished us off.

Very few of our players would be happy with their performance, but we never gave them the opportunity to win this game.

Q1 it was so obvious what Collingwood were doing - pressure upfield, choke up our forward line to negate the talls, and then attack from the intercepts.

I expected a response at quarter time to combat it - did we do anything substantially different?

Didn't appear so.

Moving Laird into the midfield, that's the best we can do? That's a positional change of one player, not a tactical adjustment to the gameplan in response to the Collingwood's gameplan.

I am not making excuses for last night, however, what happened was another example of how the AFL media circus throws fuel on the fire with these types of incidents.

Rankine was clearly targeted by Collingwood players in that Round 23 game and the sledging and baiting ended up with him doing something completely stupid.

Rather than just letting the issue come and go, instead we're then subjected to the massive pile on from every angle of the AFL media for the better part of a week constantly bringing it up 24/7. We then had the AFL media later criticising the club for having the nerve to stand up for Rankine by raising the sleding and treatment that Rankine received during the game that led up to the inident.

The whole thing created an us versus them mentality and with the non stop barrage of it continually being brought up every five minutes, it ends up with the supporters being angry about it. Throw that in with the vision of IQ seemingly laughing at Rankine over the incident it then also creates questions over the motives of why it was raised.

Rightly or wrongly It ended up being a powder keg of emotion that exploded last night.

I just want to know if the same people who are outraged with the Quaynor booing will share the same outrage when Rankine is boo'd mercilessly by a bunch of racist Collingwood fans the next time he plays them at the MCG?
Could the difference be that he called someone a ******?

Well said!

As a club we surely cant be too far away from advising the media to pull their heads in. Obviously the booing has reignited the issue for now and well its fair and reasonable to expect some coverage. Will be interesting whether their is a pile on throughout the week though.
