Thommo won't get dropped at any point this year.

That holding the ball against him when we were 4 goals up and had the clearance was the turning point. He could barely move in the last quarter.

Still, he was our best mid on the night. I think we need another clearance player in the side, be it Lyons or CEY.

Mackay wasn't in the bottom 6 i agree but he was just average.

The thing is we have much better players we can select who play his position who can be much better than average!

Cameron, Knight, Menzel, Hendo are all far better selections than Mackay and have now proved form and fitness so that's why he will be left out.

Look at this way…he was putrid in the Prelim on the back of a very poor 2015. He has spent every credit he earn all those years ago (it wasn't a lot).

We should be asking what the hell he did to deserve selection again given Knight, Cameron, Henderson, Beech, Wigg all performed in the SANFL.

The whole 'he wasn't really that bad' is not an elite standards mindset.

After a decent first half he was nowhere to be seen when the pressure was on as North came back. More rag dolling, more missed tackled, more off balance possessions due to being a featherweight…this must not continue or he'll be another celebrated 200 gamer who should never have been.

Imo, the turning point was giving away silly frees in the 3rd quarter, including 50m penalties... Which handed them momentum.

We got sucked in to their niggling tactics. Poor onfield leadership.

Vb needs to be dropped as just out of form at Afl level. I fear it may be permanent as he has lost the lateral movement since the injury. Needs a big stint in the Sanfl to recapture form & movement... Mind you I said this last year.

Mackay was ok - not great, not terrible. Knight needs to come back in as is the future. Question is who does he come in for? Do we persist with both of the inexperienced milera & McGovern or drop one instead of MacKay? I'm not a fan of dropping 1st gamers.

Atkins was ok, so not sure why you would drop him.

My concern is bringing in 3 underdone players - hendo, menzel & cc.

It appears knight & hendo are the most likely to be ready, though hendo usually needs more time.

Imo, we need to play the long game with menzel - needs at least a few weeks in the Sanfl to gain fitness.

Cc looks like he could do with another week.

Would prefer to be sure with fitness with players returning even if it means we get more games into inexperienced milera & McGovern.

I'm not convinced that Hendo is better than Mackay - not the dodgy version of Mackay we saw mid-2015 and certainly not the improved version we saw last night. Hendo is one of the most overrated players on our list - all the physical attributes to be a genuine gun, but he has never put it together to be anything more than a limited player.

I'm also not convinced that Menzel is anywhere near ready for AFL football. I would be surprised to see him selected before R6 at the earliest.

That leaves Knight and Cameron. I would drop VB and Milera, replacing them with Knight and Cameron. I have no qualms about dropping VB after last night's performance. It's harsh on Milera, but someone has to be make way for Cameron and he's the most obvious candidate. Milera oozes class and has outstanding disposal, but right now he just doesn't get enough of the pill. I expect that he'll have plenty more opportunities as the season progresses.

Having said that, I strongly suspect that they'll give Knight and Cameron another run in the SANFL. Match fitness isn't just about a player's ability to run out a single game, after a long layoff (i.e. the pre-season). It's about their ability to back that performance up week after week. I suspect they'll want to see how they go next week, before promoting them to the senior team (where they belong).

I can also see the possibility of Hartigan replacing VB this week, given Port's tall forward line, if they choose not to go with Knight & Cameron. Cheney would then fill the defensive role played by VB, minus the midfield duties.

Mackay's game is not AFL standard when you consider his experience (140 games), injury history (very few), position (outside mid), contract status (long term), squad profile (lots of depth) and number of consecutive games at AFL level (many).

I expect someone who plays a lot of games in a row without injury concerns to play much better with his experience. I especially expect him to outperform younger players who don't have the benefit of consistent AFL games
