In:Hartigan, Knight & CEY
Out: McGovern, VB & Mackay

nah leave mcgovern.
knight for mackay, hartigan in for schulz.. maybe for cheney i guess, even though he was alright.
CEY is an inside mid so he won't replace VB, they would need to rejig the defensive structure to get rid of golden boy.

I think the only person that's obvious is VB out, and that's a big issue because VB is still part of the leadership team and so probably won't be moved out in the first place.

Knight and Cameron should go in, but Knight usually plays centre-forward and Cameron is 99% forward with Betts so...

VB for Knight.
Milera for Cameron.

Blah. It's official: we have too many forwards.

The more avenues to goal the better. Milera, Atkins and knight play like mids and yet all are capable of a goal a game. Thats a good thing. Given the scores on the weekend, average 86 in 2015 up to mid 90s 2016.. its going to be really good for us I feel. Not good as a supporter as all teams will kick many goals and you will have your hearts in your mouths for most of the match but eventually most of the time teams with the most forward power will win.

Interesting and tough selection ahead for Pyke, with even more players lining up for selection.

Reports I've heard suggest Cameron was managed through the SANFL game a fair bit, with limited game time, which suggests he's another week away.

Knight sounds pretty much ready, but then the question becomes who to drop for him. Personally, my belief is that if you're going to debut a player, you give them 2 weeks, unless maybe if they were a last minute call up. Personally I think it's worth investing another game into both Milera and McGovern. Mackays next cab off the rank, my initial thoughts are that he did enough to avoid the axe, but then I come back to my belief that you shouldn't have to say "he did enough to hold his spot" about a player with 100+ games experience, let alone one with 145 games and that if you are saying it, it's probably time to move on anyway. So personally, if anyone's to drop out for Knight at this stage, it's Mackay, but it's probably 50-50.

My next concern is defense. My belief is that having Cheney vs Hartigan on Waite made SFA difference, although I would have picked Hartigan for the game. Now I actually like what Pyke is working towards with Cheney over Hartigan, but Port, even more so than the Roos are a team that we need that 3rd big body for. Shultz, Dixon and Westhoff all have the potential to truly get off the chain and have a big day against us. Cheney absolutely cannot play on Westhoff or Dixon, Shultz I suppose is an option, at only 193cm Cheney only gives away 6cm as opposed to 12 and 15cm, but even then. Personally I'd be dropping VB, I know it's become clichéd, but I just don't think he offers the leadership we need from him and that Cheney would be just as capable of filling his role across half back, I fact more capable as he is far more reliable by foot, is stronger over head, is cooler under pressure, has far better lateral movement and has similar straight line speed.

So at this stage, I guess my desired changes would be:
In: Hartigan and Knight
Out: VB and Mackay
With an eye towards perhaps bringing Cameron in the following week for Milera. I could however see the merit in giving Knight another game in the SANFL.

Having said all this, it would not surprise if we went in unchanged, with Pyke preaching stability in the line up over knee jerk reactions.

For matchup purposes, I'ld like to see Shaw come in for Cheney (v Westhoff).
Knight for VB
Perhaps they're not yet ready (AFL match conditioned), but Cameron for his pace & defensive pressure and Menzel for his x-factor & goal kicking are both in my best 22.

Out: VB, Mackay
In: Hartigan, Lyons
As Vader says, if Lyons is the answer then you're asking the wrong question.

I think guys like Lyons, CEY, Grigg et al are a break glass in case of emergency. I give you that Lyons had a decent preseason.

Once knight, CC, Menzel and Hampton are fully fit, I hope never to see those guys or VB and Mackay in the side again.

In the SANFL
Ricky Henderson (25 possessions, 11 marks) oozed class across half-back in his first game of the year returning from a pre-season back injury.

Would be a good replacement for VB.

And while Milera looks class there is not enough output from him.... I think Beech

Barely six months after playing in West Adelaide’s premiership triumph last September, Beech played a starring role in Adelaide’s crushing 74-point Round One win over the Bloods at City Mazda Stadium.

The 25-year-old amassed 25 possessions and 10 marks against his former club in an outstanding debut performance in Crows colours. Beech began the match on a wing and pushed forward regularly, slotting three goals and notching five inside 50ms.

I thought Mackay had a serviceable game and should go again.

Thanks. Did Henderson move freely and did you see any work by the medical staff at breaks etc?

This is the write-up from the Crows site about the SANFL game. I didn't see it but with stats like that I doubt if he was troubled.

In: Hendo Out: VB
In: Knight Out: Mackay
In: Hartigan Out: Cheney (not that he had a bad game)
In: Menzel Out: Atkins
After watching the replay have to say Atkins was unseen. VB was seen as he follows the ball ups but if he is the player your relying on around the ball you have no hope of being a finals side

Just on the VB selection...

Firstly I am not a fan. He shouldn't be playing.

But a couple of things to think about:

- We had McGovern and Milera debuting, and B Crouch coming in for his first game in basically 2 years. Three very fresh players in three key areas. Perhaps another player like a Knight (with no pre season) was too big a risk.

- The role that VB plays in Pyke's structure may not be able to be played by anyone else at the moment. I'd suspect it's Hampton but he is injured.

Again, he's been terrible but some food for thought.
and what role is that

I was at the game and I focussed on VB just before norths counter attacks. I was sitting on the wing.

His job is not ****ing hard at all, he'll setup with the other defenders just outside the 50 to guard space as North approach the centre part of the ground on a rebound.

VB will stand there with both arms wide open like he's about to do hoola-hoops (guarding space), he'll also finger point and assign other troops to certain areas of the ground, he's also always a play behind the contest. One of the reasons why he's found himself with a total of 9 disposals for the night.

His role isn't hard at all. I'd assume Milera can play the same role minus the finger pointing to assign troops.. Hell let VB come on with the pink guersney saying "trainer" if we need to help the backline out with leadership.

A supporter can only take so much, another ****-up by Noble, offering VB 3 years and MacKay 4.

I saw Atkins a fair bit

In: Knight, Hartigan/Shaw
Out: VB, Mackay

If one more, Cameron for Cheney.

Beat a tired opponent. I rank it in the same boat as giving Robbie Gray credit for camping like a loser in the forward line looking for cheap ball. Lucky to get it on this occasion but his attitude of running forward all the time will prove a liability against better teams who can easily counter ports lack of run.
This is ancient thinking. Forwards are attacking players and are paid to kick goals. Why wouldn't they try find space? The same thing can and has been said for JJ & Betts. It's smart attacking play. As long as they defend when the opposition has the ball.

I think it shows where we are as a squad of players. We are struggling to match up against teams that have a bunch of good dangerous talls. Our selection problems (apart from the ongoing saga of the non-contributories :() revolve around trying to find match-ups for our opponents tall manpower. This just slants our selection as re-active and maybe compromised because we are deficient/don't have the ready options . It would be nice to someday get to the stage where our own pro-active selection of (say) tall players gives problems to other teams and causes them to second guess.

Gray getting all the forwards to push up and have him isolated one one one deep seemed to work I would have thaught hey. He is as masterful in the stoppage clearances as he is as an opportune forward. Keeps his feet and uses his body to out balance defenders. We need to check him hard and curtail his influence.
