That could be somewhat remedied if someone,a coach,a banished leader, whoever starts to coordinate our rotations better.
Someone, the clearance fairy, a stoppage nymph, anyone, teaches or installs some form of clearance strategy besides Just getting Sauce to stand under the ball, and if lucky enough to get a timed jump, Palm it down to his feet and hope our insiders can scrap it out.

Our midfield and clearance structures, strategy and rotations are flipping Div-2 ammo quality and completely one dimensional.Got away with it to an extent because Danger was a Freak and Thommo does what Thommo does, but shit it's been stale for the past 4 seasons. Who is in control of this crap, and can we find someone with a bit of football intellect to replace him/her/them please?

It's not rotations, it's not systems or structure. It's talent and class, and the sheer lack of it - the hole was always there, Dangerfield walking out simply tore it wider.

I wouldn't have brought it Hartigan, but can understand the reasoning. Would have preferred Knight to replace VB and keep the same defensive structure as last week. He has a different opinion to you, as do I, doesn't make anyone right or wrong. I'll be interested to see how the structure works this week.

Rabbit told me flat out that Cheney and VB were not, not, not fighting for the same spot. In terms of the players they can go to, if both in form, there's little difference. Cheney can probably play a little taller due to greater core strength. Rabbit decided that VB was a partial midfielder for some reason and that he'd only be replaced by a Grigg or Gore type. Stated this as fact but it just shouldn't be that finite and its not and VB's no partial mid. To then suggest that the club has panicked by not continuing with this fantasy structure is arrogance at its greatest.

Bad news for the SANFL team

VB dominated in the 2s last year when he had a spell. Let's hope the selectors aren't fooled by it this time around. I love the guy, but his time has come and the game has passed him by. Let the youngsters take over.

Yeah there's a lot of this going on right now for mine. We are relying on two 25 gamers and a soon to be retired veteran to extract the ball. There's big gaps there.

I agree with the first part, but Cheney can definitely play on KPF's in the 185-190cm range (of which there are plenty more of now). I think he's our best matchup for someone like Stringer.
Sure, but none of port's or Roos' 3 kpp talls are in this range.

Just because the Hawks played him there out of lack of alternatives doesn't make him a KPD, it just makes him a third tall defender who is better at playing tall than any of the others.

He was always a third tall defender playing out of position, and the only time he wasn't is when the Hawks actually had enough real key defenders that they could play him in his own position. This year Lake is gone, and Ryan Schoenmakers remains a bad KPD playing as an ordinary KPF because Roughead is out, and they're already making Gunston play out of position, so Gibson is being forced to play out of position once more.
Before he can here, Hawks routinely played Cheney as their tall when Lake was out with injuries/suspension. I reckon that one patch at the start of 2014 he got matched up on Johnathan Brown, Jeremy Cameron, Hawkins, Pavlich, Carlisle and then Tippett. It's not unusual for guys to play out of position when injuries strike as you say.

He didn't exactly dominate

VB had 2-3 average games followed by 1 very good game and it was that last 28 disposal game that got him back in the side

So you're saying that delisting Wright has critically wounded our forward structure.

Josh Gibson is as much a KPD as Scott Welsh was a KPF - asked to stand the post on the magnet board for lack of anyone else, but a KP in name only.

Height is and always has been one of the defining features of being both a KPD and a KPF, and no matter how good they are at everything else, or how often they are forced to play up due to short handed teams, if a player isn't tall enough, then they aren't a KPP.
185cm CHF named Dermott Brereton says high!

Wut. Why do you place things in your comments that aren't anything to do with the original statement?

And Sam Newman was a 190cm ruckman in 1965.

Different eras have different heights, and it's all getting taller.
I think it might be good time for you to reflect, go back and read last weeks thread and how often you were wrong and quite condescending about it too. Throw in being wrong about Crouch's report, what have you got right lately?

Agreed we could go a clever ball player or two in the guts, but if you view the game in such ways as to suggest that throwing 4 gun mids together regardless of that which I've pointed out, would be enough to dominate teams which do have coordinated rotations, structure and systems, then you simply don't watch the game close enough, and as suspected for some time, just barrack for the guys you think are guns I.e Thommo etc.

What the hell do you think coaches are for? mOtivation? You think Adam Simpson had the second best midfield on paper last year?

He's named on their list at CHB, but he's not a key defender. This week the Hawks are playing with a single, solitary KPD, James Frawley.

? Gibson has been playing as a KPD for years, Hawthorn and Gibson would love him to play as a third tall back but because of injuries to Lake and Frawley over the last few years they haven't been able to free him up like they would like.

Will be watching our rebound with interest.

Brown looked like he was trying to be a bit more attacking in the preseason and so did Talia but neither gave us anything last week.

Cheney was predominantly in a defensive role and didn't get much of it. Neither did Lever. Add Hartigan and we've got 5 blokes who don't naturally play an attacking game (Lever will down the track).

Can't leave it all to Smith and Laird.

Yeah, this was my point last week and still my worry.

I guess Seedsman can push back, and Lever/Cheney/Brown need to be proactive with attacking moves.
