Review R22: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. West Coast Eagles

Good:
The Eagles were brilliant, everything they attempted turned to gold. Tim Kelly, Tom McCarthy, Shanahan and Ryan were excellent. The ball bounce their way, scrubber kicks floated right into their hands, they stuck their tackles, moved the ball out of defence insanely fast then kicked accurately.

Winning when you play like you consumed left over garlic prawns which had been left in the fridge for 4 days is better than people give it credit for. Better than meandering through a 9 goal win against rubbish at least.

They didn't lie down even when every kick and handball was turning to vomit.

Zac Taylor, couldn't be happier and prouder for him, stood up when it mattered with class, precision and calm.

Keane and Worrell in the 2nd half, just dug in and started to outmark their forwards.

Pedlar with 3, I though Burgess was okay, he covered the ground nicely.
We got enough out of Soligo, Cumming, Milera, Hinge and Laird to stay in the fight.

Bond did some nice things and took on some heat.

Bad:
Perhaps the 9 day break had an extra weights session or extra match practice as they looked flat and barely spread until halfway through the 3rd quarter.

Thilthorpes neck... ill hit him there if it means he gets fired up like that.

Ugly:

A real lack of intensity, it was a big game last week. Hard to get primed for a trip to WA on a Sunday arvo to play "rubbish."

People getting upset and frazzled over almost losing to West Coast, settle down gang, we can't have every game go our way all the time. As long as we don't play in WA we will be fine :p

Good: 4 points, got it done.
Also a good game to play shithouse and get it behind us.
WCE pressure, to their credit.

Bad: SO much, dunno where to start; too many passengers.

Disappointing: Jones, for whom I've had high hopes but he lost me today.
Deadeye-Fogarty, Taylor, Thilthorpe missing gimmes (but RT made up for it in the last --- how does a 2-metre giant get down like that to crumb and snap such a good goal? Elite!)

Terrible: Burgess. Some players excel at SANFL but shit the bed at AFL level. Burgess' sheets are messy-brown.

West Coast played out of their skin. Credit to them. We haven't had that pressure against us in a while. A good wake up call.
We can't be outstanding every week. No team can. We showed a bit of character in the last quarter and also a bit of class. Bank the points and look to next week.

Too much bed wetting in here, we were due a down game. Our last poor performance was all the way back on Anzac Day against freo.

West coasts pressure was ridiculous, where has that been for 20 weeks?
It was their "Goodbye Heroes" game they schedule us every couple of years.

We had Kennedys last game as well lol

I don't get why they didn't farewell them in a fortnight against the Swans?

did i not mention cheap ball. he did nothing with it and provided no damage. they are two very seperate things.
Cheap ball?

14 contested possessions out of his 23

The most contested possessions of any Crow and the second most on the ground after Tim Kelly

I’ve only just joined this forum. Why do fans get so angry with each other? We won and sit one game clear at top.

Its like prison, you join a gang first day.

The gangs are:

1. Nicks is an idiot (The Haters).
2. Nicks is not an idiot, Murphy deserved his shot. (The Happy Clappers).

Welcome to Jekyll-and-Hyde-Land.

Get used to it; it's been worse, often (wait for Selection night melts!).
You'd think that brother-fans would have more tolerance (kindness, even) but some forget this is a discussion Forum and just want to be right.

Thankfully we most likely will not play Freo at Optus in the finals. Our worst performances seem to be over there.
Today, vs Freo 2025, vs Freo 2024, vs Freo 2018 etc. Is it because it's a relatively new stadium, the dimensions, the sunlight???
It's just one of our bogey grounds, like Kardinia Park and the Tasmanian ones.

I've watched burgess play live in the sanfl a lot this year and he is generally a cut above that level but from what I have seen of him at AFL level there is a big gap between being a KPF in the AFL to playing SANFL. Unfortunately he's one of those players too good for SANFL but not good enough for AFL.

I also had a bit of time for Bonds game. Got in trouble a couple of times trying to take the game on, but the fact he's breaking tackles and making things happen with his legs is super promising.

I don’t get why some on here claim guys like Burgess, Scholl and Borlase are good depth. Whenever they actually play they are way out of their depth.

We really don't have much depth. We are bassically all in with our best 23.
That’s not correct. We had Rachele, Max and Walker out today who are clearly best 23. Then we also had the option of Smith, Butts and Crouch

Could probably add Nank to the list as well. Depth is reasonable

Am I the only one who didn't think we played that bad? Had a poor first 5 minutes and our forward entries broke down all day, but I think we played okay (maybe 10% off), it's just West Coast played out of their skin. I feel like they would have knocked off 2/3rds of the comp with that display.

Forward structure was poor. I wonder if that can be purely put down to playing burgess? Keays and ANB had almost no influence as link players or defensively. Burgess is an sanfl player for sure.

Good:
Dawson
Rankine. Probably the best I've seen him play around the ball in that second half. Clean, classy and found a lot of it. Let's hope he can bring that into finals.
TT massive in big moments.
Worrell. Started shaky, but typical game
Keane likewise
Taylor took a big step forward today. In a pressure game (who would have thought against WC) his class stood out. Best game for the club.
Cumming growing into his role imo.

Average:
ROB. Got beaten today. Had some pretty good touches with ball in hand still. Zero threat in the air though.
Bond has something. Got caught a couple of times, but I thought he was pretty cool under a lot of pressure at times.
Pedlar. Nailed his chances. Bit quiet outside of that.
Keays
ANB
Fog going through an average second half of the year imo. Missing a few easy shots, not overly threatening in the air. Need to get some confidence into him asap.

Bad:
Murray
Berry quiet
Curtin quiet
Burgess

He was one of the few that had success breaking tackles today, but yeah that was a highlight. Think Bond was pretty good - either way he's sticking around until Max is back and there will be some interesting decisions to make next year about our defence.

We play North in two weeks and that sort of performance will not get it done against them.

Hopefully this is the get out of jail wakeup for the group
Outside of the second quarter - this was more about the Eagles than us. Good win in the end - we have lost games like that in the past

Reckon he'll be pretty filthy with himself. Especially for the second one.
Not as filthy as I was when he missed both. To be fair, the first was difficult-but-gettable but the second was a goalkicker's meat'n'spuds.
I was hugely disappointed with his game tonight, not to mention the dropped marks.

Luckily for us, Dowling played a blinder in the SANFL yesterday and Burgess can go back to his comfort zone.
