Ben Reid>Michael Hurley>>Jack Watts>>>>>>>Lachlan Henderson

5 Years:

Ben Reid=Michael Hurley>Jack Watts>>>>> Lachlan Henderson

People are forgetting that at 22 years old, he was the AA CHB. That is a feat that Hurley, Watts (AA CHF) or Henderson have even come close to achieving. Anybody that has put Hurley in front of Reid now is suffering from a severe case of bias or believe that potential outweighs output.

I do believe however, that Hurley will reach Reid's standard and Watts will not be far off.

Henderson has not reached any of the other's output by a long shot. Sure he showed a bit of potential for 5 rounds but in realistic terms, the other players are a few classes above Henderson currently.

Ive seen this argument used against collingwood SO many times..."their only good because their surrounded by stars". You just have to replace Reid with sidebottom beams thomas dawes basically everyone except swan and pendlebury on our whole goddam list!

He was one of the upper echelon players surrounding others, not the other way around. Theres a reason we finished top of the ladder with an amazing percentage and were close to winning the grand final, and reid is a BIG part of it.

And havnt essendon supporters been saying numerous times that they have the best coaching team in the league? or one of the best. Its a cop out to say Reid is better only because he had better coaches and a better game plan, how on earth do u know that? Maybe essendons game plan was better but they had worse players, maybe essendon have a better coaching team in the first place.

Reids being very harshly dealt imo

What I said wasn't a negative towards Reid. Great teams make good players great. He's deserved the accolades he's received so far, and hopefully has more to come (after he gets traded to a club that I'm completely indifferent about:p).

But how would have Hurley fared in collingwood's squad and Reid in essendon's? Hard to say, what we can say is Hurley can put in efforts that make him stand out and have opposition supporters saying "you can build a premiership side around this kid".

They don't say that about Reid. But thats more to do with the fact that collingwood were already on the cusp of a flag when you drafted him.

Bigfooty will never allow that. Repeat after me: Judd is useless and can't kick, Gibbs is a chipscab who floats around halfback, Jacobs was our best ruckman (only after he was traded, of course), Jamison is serviceable at best, and lets not get started on Waite.

Don't get too hung up on BF opinion.

After all Collingwood have a whole team of ordinary footballers who are only good because they are so well coached and have a mysterious game plan that no one can work out. Without MM to mark and kick the ball, handpass and kick goals for them, they will be lucky to beat GWS next year. Reid is another of the ordinary footballers who was gifted an AA place because all the other ordinary players around him made him look good.

As for currently
1. Reid
2. Hurley
daylight
3 Henderson
4. Watts

in 10 years

1. Reid and Hurley
3. Watts
4. Henderson

Just my opinion.

How would of hurley fared? pretty similar, then peoplewould again be saying "his only great because of the others around him", and Reid would be hailed as the next inspector gadget.

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=876536&page=5. From the pages i looked at Reid actually appears more than Hurley as "players you want to start a list with". They also dont say it about Reid becuase the premiership side is already built and relys on even contributions from many stars and many solid players, like all premiership sides.

1. What pages were you looking at? In the thread, Hurley is named 37 times, "Reid" 36 times. Seems about even.
2. On your own list you have Hurley at number 1 and Reid at number 2. Probably because Hurley has shown that he can handle both ends of the ground well and is a booming kick on both sides. I don't blame you. Hard to look past that.

I have them both in my 10, hurley being 1 doesnt mean his the best of the 10 just thought of him first

1. Hurley
2. Reid
3. Henderson
4. Watts

I rate Reid higher than Hurley as a player, but North could use a key forward of Hurley's quality just in case our young forwards like Black, Kennedy, Curran etc don't come good. We have plenty of key defenders already. I rate Henderson higher than Watts, I was very impressed by the job Henderson did on Petrie this season and I think he still has a lot of improvement. I hope Carlton persist with him as a defender rather than moving him forward.

For those non-Melbourne supporters ranking Watts as likely to be either the best or second best in the group after ten years (and that seems to be the consensus or close to it): Can I ask what it is about him that makes you confident he'll be one of the better players?

From someone who follows the club, I'm of the same opinion because he keeps getting better seemingly every week, while playing with a body that isn't yet equipped for AFL bulk-wise.

In particular, when I see him on the wing or in the centre, his delivery into the forward line is the best I've ever seen for a guy of his size - the kid has real skill. And he has vision (no doubt from developing as a basketballer) to find loose runners that a lot of players simply don't have (Pendles has it too, another basketballer). He's good in the air and at ground level, but gets pushed off the ball too easily at the moment.

I think his biggest weakness was how he doubted himself a bit early on - but he seems to have got past it and now looks like he's confident in his role as an AFL player. According to Neeld, he's set the bar for training this off-season too, and anyone who follows the club knows he puts the work in.

But a lot of this stuff wouldn't be apparent to anyone who didn't follow the Dees very closely, and if I weren't a Dees supporter I'd probably be having difficulty evaluating him at all (especially considering his age).

So yeah, what is it about him you think demonstrates his potential? What games have you noticed him in?

It's interesting that people just assume Hurley will easily overstep Reid. There's only 1 year difference and Reid has already shown an ability to do the tough jobs consistently over the last two years. Hurley shows he's going to be a good player but has yet to hit the ability to regularly impact on matches for long periods of time like Reid has.

It's not a given that the step to the star level is just going to happen. When you already have the points on the board that has to be respected. Hence Reid has to take the win even given the discussion for future prospects.

I hope Watts becomes an elite player. I haven't seen a lot of him, but he looks like he could be similar to Nick Riewoldt. It's hard to determine where all 4 players will end up, but if Watts takes off he could be number 1 on the list after 10 years.

See I don't see much of Riewoldt in Watts apart from the obvious physical similarity.

Riewoldt is so much more accomplished than Watts in the air it isn't funny. Contested marking wise, Watts is good at making a contest, and he is good at taking a speccie - but he isn't anywhere near Riewoldt in the air.

Likewise, Riewoldt's engine is something that I can't see Watts getting anywhere near.

Watts is far more in the mould of Nic Naitanui than Nick Riewoldt as far as athleticism goes (not saying Watts is the athlete Naita is, but he's closer to Naita than Riewoldt). Watts has amazing pace and athleticism for his size, and he is a monster at ground level. Check out his sprint and agility results from the draft camp, they're pretty staggering for a 190cm+ player.

Likewise, Watts kills Nick Riewoldt when it comes to disposal and field kicking.

I really don't see the similarity between the two at all.

If I was saying Watts was like any player in the AFL, (as far as player type, not performance) I might go with Adam Goodes or Matthew Pavlich. But he reminds me most of a prime Anthony Koutoufides, without the muscle bulk.

Although he may well be behind all the others in 5-10 years, I think people's general opinion (on BF) of Henderson is a little harsh. I think he could at least be as good or better than Watts, personally, but honestly it's impossible to tell with any of these players 100%, but the general consensus could be close.

Watts has had a better output than Henderson, to say otherwise is pretty silly.

As a KPP Henderson has had a better output than Watts IMO. Why do you think that's silly? Reckon Hendo gets underrated on BF. At 20yo, in his first year at a new club, he held down CHF in a re-gigged forward line and kicked 25 goals; having hip surgery in December last year hampered him from going on with it this year.

For me on exposed output ...

Reid
Hurley
Henderson
Watts

If I'm going to take a punt at the future ...

Watts
Hurley
Reid
Henderson

But really who knows this shit. One thing is for sure, BF tries to rate KPP way too early. It wouldn't surprised me one bit if the future worked out to be completely different.

Hurley would not get pushed around by Hawkins like Reid in the GF. Hurley is a monster in defence, It is just he looks like he has so much to offer playing forward that they are trying him forward.

Kinda illustrates my point. You created a thread about which players (out of all AFL players mind you) would be best to start a list with and the first name that came to your head was Hurley.

Maybe you should start focusing on why you think Hurley is it and a bit and then perhaps you might understand why other posters have also selected Hurley before Reid as well.

Why are pies supporters so sensitive when it comes to their players? There hasn't been a single post knocking Reid, just a lot of people reckoning that another young KPP will be better than him at the end of their careers.

Why so serious?
