Add WC to the list.

Cast your mind back to 2011, when we were going fairly well. We beat Sydney twice that year, at home and away, but while we beat them I could well see the precise same gameplan/goals that won them a flag 2 seasons later; they needed to get more bulk around the ball (either via building existing players up, as they did, or by trading them in) to match our quality and mature midfield, and they needed to continue to acquire players to complement what they already had.

WC and Geelong (and Richmond, but to a lesser degree) all kept us at arms length, beating up on us around the ball and using our clearances to feed their intercept games, and all for different ends. What I want is for us to improve our stoppage coaching (and our list depth and quality through the middle, to complement the work done by the coaches) to create clean clearances, or at the very least avenues towards clear extraction, and strategies to clear out the forward flanks to allow our talls to run and leap at the ball.

We can lower the eyes and we can go long to marking targets, but we need to have systems in place to give our talls opportunity. There is a difference between our long kicks down the line against sides like St Kilda, WB, Freo, and our long bombs to Vlaustin, McGovern (and Barrass, and Shepard) and Stewart.
Really liked your post. Spot on analysis of where we have been these last few weeks. A lot of hurried kicks into the forward line. All under pressure. Not many broken tackles. Made it easy for the opposition defense.in particular when they put an extra player in defense. It was disappointing that we found it hard to create a stoppage in our inside 50. We need some work in the gym and some bigger bodied players at the stoppages and the forward fifty.Check the broken tackles, Richmond had today. Kept thier nerve and possession until they found a target. Do we also need a tackling coach. Melbourne storm could help. Distressing was watching a tall leaping ruckman climb over Cruiser and tapping the ball down to a rampaging Dangerfield. Cruiser is good in a contested ruck maul but not sure if the opposition sides can't counter his body work .
We may need alternatives in ruck. Happy with our defense. A lot of pressure this year with lightning entries from turn overs. Kudos to them. Small crumbing forwards and bigger bodies in the stoppages please next year. Looking forward to a big year 2020!

Dow vs polson...Not sure who will become the better player at this stage
Given one, is tracking at .25 avg more possessions (14.01 v 14.26) and 13 more games than Trent Cotchin had achieved after his first 2 seasons, and the other is three seasons in, played half as many seniors games, avg's only 7 disposals in those 16 games and spent his 3rd season playing in the 2's, at this juncture your fortune teller would probably suggest the former is laying the foundations to be pretty handy!

These are your comments. All Arr0w is saying, and he's been harping on this point for about two years, is that Brisbane are a year ahead of us in assembling their list. See also, https://www.sen.com.au/news/2019/04/11/the-stats-that-prove-you-cant-compare-brisbane-and-carlton/ . Comprehend the numbers.

Given that
  1. Brisbane are a year ahead of Carlton;
  2. Carlton won more games in the equivalent year; and
  3. Carlton did so without a significant contingent of best 22 players available,
It is more than reasonable, to suggest that Carlton are ahead of Brisbane on this basis.

The exact quote was "our rebuild is ahead of where the Lions were ".

Lions 2018 finished 15th. This year we finished 16th.

They only won 5 games. We won 7. They had a higher percentage (89 vs 84).

In the last round (having won 4 of their 5 games in the last 9 - we won 6 of 11 with Teague) they pushed the premiers to within 26 points (Geelong beat us by how much?). Pies beat them by 31 points (who finished second).

To say that we are definitively ahead of Brisbane at the same point in each club's rebuild is a big stretch. It shows navy blue glasses and looks silly.

Of course if we add an equivalent of Neale and Cameron, we would expect to rise significantly. Though I don't think even the most optimistic poster expects us to finish the home and away season 2nd next year. Assuming we don't, will you and the original poster then declare we are behind Brisbane? This is where drawing long bows comes back to bite...

I was at the game. It wasn't a great performance. Wet as hell. At least one umpire will surely be dumped to the VFL next year. I was a bit sad we just simply gave up in the last quarter.

But who cares, look at the list, Geelong are big bodied and filled to the brim with experience. We have a huge amount of 21-24 year olds brimming with talent and I am very much looking forward to next year.

Teague has made us exciting again and given us glimpses of the potential.

Over to SOS, Brodie and Agresta to bring in some guns during the offseason.

Pats on the bag to the Blues fans who travelled down the highway to Geelong. To Dale Thomas thankyou for all your efforts in helping turn the greatest club around from where it was when you came. Can't wait for 2020 baby son on the way and hopefully a top 4 finish for the mighty Blues.
Congrats. Your second club, if you aren't already on board

Thanks for the season Blue boys.

Please treat every day between now and the next season as a chance to help build something special. Rest and play, don't lose sight of the bigger picture and come back ready to go hard.

Looking forward to next year.

Most of the numbers point to us being ahead of where they were - but of course it's possible to construct an argument to the contrary. If everything goes right in trade period, pre season and 2020 (however improbable), Brisbane have shown that anything is possible.

It can be argued both ways. So if a person is objective, they don’t make sweeping statements like the one in question....That was my point. Love the back peddling. Politician worthy!

To be clear; the weight of evidence points to Carlton being ahead of Brisbane at the equivalent point last year. Nobody has deviated from this statement.

Your argument to the contrary relies on less persuasive data points, such as performance in the final round (a single game, arbitrarily selected). What you interpret as back pedaling is an attempt at finding common ground or at least agreeing to disagree, rather than falling for your misguided attempts at playing the man and moving the goal posts.

I'm happy to continue the discussion in another thread, but won't be replying any more in the Geebungs autopsy.

Nobody is playing the man. Classic deflection technique.

My point is simply that the evidence does not allow such a definitive statement to be made. You now seem to accept that but rather than just say so, you pretend to be a victim.

You also didn’t answer the question - if we don’t finish 2nd next year does that mean our rebuild falls behind the Lions? If not, how can the original statement stand?

Know it was a rough day but pats on the bag may be taking it a little too far...

Physically it is boys against men in the stoppages.
