Love these sort of hypotheticals.

I reckon most young players feel fairly bullet proof. I'm come around to the opinion in the last week or two that he might leave if we win a flag (mostly for family reasons if I had to take a guess), and if we don't he'll then make the hard decision, so the line about not deciding til later sounds reasonable to me when viewed from that angle. As to the risk... I think it's one alot of young players will accept. Risk/reward trade off. Let's say he does a knee -> even then clubs will throw money at him. Once he's recovered he would still give multiple years of top quality service.
This is the difference between ablett and buddy to danger. Both those players delivered premiership(s) to their clubs. They left after with big $$ deals and nobody could fault them for that. The supporters of geelong and hawthorn didnt want them to leave but understood and accepted. If he leaves and i dont think he will it will be a massive kick in the guts because from what it looks like this year we will build towards one in the next 3 and danger is an essential part of that drive.

None of those coaches have brought us to a grand final or even had us looking like being serious contenders outside of the one outlier year in 2012 under Sando. The issue many have is this team has never been good enough and part of that extends to guys like Mackay who have been inside the best 22 during that period yet have never really taken his position by the balls. So again, the issue is, if he's best 22 (on current/previous career form) then we won't ever be a real contender and if he isn't viewed as best 22, then why has he been signed to a 4 year deal? You don't see the like of Hawthorn signing guys like Spangher to 4 year deals.

Role players/depth is important to any side that wishes to be a contender, but they're not the position you should be looking to fill first.
We read from the same page couldnt agree more.

Shame none of those listed play in his position this year. Mackay (note the 2nd A in his name) is playing a defensive role this year.
Problem is david is not a defender, defensive role player. never has been never will be.

Big risk still, given salary cap constraints. Just feel like the whole mechanism needs to be tightened and more transparent. Seems to me the only party not bearing any real risk is the player agent. Makes me wonder how much lobbying occurred from that group to get FA up.
If the player makes less money - doesn't the manager? He just manages by diversifying his investments ;)

You don't see us signing backup KPD to 4 year deals either.

They, alternatively, sign Liam Shiels to a 5 year deal, having averaged under 20 touches a game for his career.

The best thing for Danger will be to sign for the crows for 2 years. He then becomes a UFA and can basically write his own cheque. He will be 28 and still able to get a 5 year deal on big money and there will be more salary room for clubs. It would give him enough time to be sure the club is going in the right direction under Walsh and Fagan.

I feel like danger has the AFC on their tippy toes, when we say that, if dont make finals or top 4 he will leave! Thats proper team first mantra

I don't like it. He's always said he wants success and has indicated he'd leave to get it. Tex, as simple as it may be, just gets up in the morning loving the club and doing anything he can to make it successful. He doesn't think about seeking success elsewhere, it's all about the club. He is the worthy captain.

I'm fairly certain that you are only a free agent the first time your contract expires after qualifying. You couldn't for example, keep signing one year extensions and be a perpetual free agent.

I think you can, actually. Happy to be proven wrong, but all the 10+ year players on one year contracts are free agents every year.

We have backup KPD's? :p

Shiels 5 year deal is a bit of a surprise, but he's at least coming off a career best season (well maybe since 2011) where he averaged 22.6 disposals a game and also managed to get 7 brownlow votes.

If we made a PF or GF and lost, I'd be leaning towards him staying. Agree with him leaving if we win one though, ties up loose ends nicely.
i've been on this train of thought for about 6 months. completely agree
