After a win like that it’s easier and nicer to focus on the good stuff, the comeback game in many ways, Daniher and all.

But I’d like to note two things in particular:
- Hooker forward was a direct result of his opponent (Patton) being injured. Don’t think we can expect it as a regular thing in future.
- The umpiring was still garbage, less so than last week though I still think there were some crap calls in both directions. Losing the free kick count obviously did not determine the outcome of the game though, thankfully.

Be just like us to watch something work really well and then not continue to do it

Those bastards. Every time. It was like Premiership Player Breust gets it and takes on the tackler, does the full 360 and shovels out a one hander and it's "play on" then matt sneulfi does the same a minute later and is pinged for being johnny no name.

Forget interpretations etc, the biggest problem the league has is that it is officiated as sports entertainment.

Remind me to get some Pavarotti in me before games more often. And now to quote the beginning of this aria, "Let no one sleep" too buzzed!

Also, watching that second half again, what I love was seeing the positivity around the boys, the way they got around each other after each effort, the smiling and hugging, made me grin. I want a ruthless edge like most, but that comraderie is fantastic moving forward.

With Hurley and (hopefully Francis) available next week, I can see him playing forward especially with Kennedy likely out.

I think it’s as hard for the players not to smile when Daniher is up and about as it is for the supporters.

He’s the kind of player that can lift a team by doing the spectacular. Not only does he straight us up as a structural player, he’s the heart of the forward line.

People saying we haven’t improved since 2017 forget just how big Daniher is for us.

Watch him force players to double or triple team him once he got up and running, then suddenly everyone else up forward had room to work.

Also, how nice was it to have Huddo, Riewoldt and Brown (who isn't great, but is miles ahead of any channel 7 commentator) instead of Dwayne and David King in the box?

Nick Riewoldt is a fantastic special comments man in particular. Extremely insightful

This was the first time that I saw RUTTEN addressing the boys at HT instead of them sitting down separately in plastic chairs with occasional position coaches walking by.

I believe this was a big reason for the switch in effort/mindset. Rutten needs to do more of this instead of hiding away while everyone else is doing his bidding.

Also, I will remember this win for the rest of my life regardless of what happens this season.

I think it's more that the positional coaches do the first bit, which is the part we generally see, and then the head brings them in

Seems like unnecessary double handling IMO. Wouldn't it be more efficient if the positional coaches told Rutten what they thought and then he spent the majority of the time speaking to the boys, ala; pretty much every coach in the past?

I also have doubts that it happens regularly as before this season, I generally saw the opposite happening at HT.

I mean I don't even see him on the ground with any sort of whiteboard or checklist or huddle in between breaks. This was the first time.

It happens at every break. You discuss what happens at a group level then get the wider team thing.

This is not something that only happens at Essendon. It happens in pretty much every team whether that be the Therry Penola 3rds or Richmond in the AFL.

Well they haven't been showing it at all. Which seems odd as they were last year and previous years before that.

Such a strange match.

I doubt a centre square combination has ever played a more dysfunctional match than Cegler, Mitchell, Worpel and co. I suspect part of it was a pressuring the secondary clearance type tactic gone wrong. It was a procession with no pressure or even countering structure. While Phillips beat Cegler in the cripple fight, even when the ruck contest was neutral it would just break our way.

It was a game of 2 teams who either can't or don't defend the ground but it set the scene for Joe's return beautifully creating the space for him to work in. Listening to Gary Lyon talk about the Hawks as though they were playing well in the first half. Just remarkable.

If it wasn't for Daniher, McGrath and even Stewart (now consistently showing an ability to cleanly take contested marks) I'd have been just as happy for the first half to continue for the laugh.

With Hurley hopefully back next week we could leave him forward.

Whilst during games I'm as guilty as anyone of criticising decisions I think in the cold light of day we have to realise there's nothing we can do about it. Better to focus on the things we can control, like the mistakes the players make. I think we had 10 more clangers than them yesterday, that had more impact on the game than the umpires IMVHO ;-)

Just watch 5 times in a row at least

The build up to the 2nd Stringer goal shows the difference between the 1st and 2nd half.
In the 1st McGrath would have given off the handball regardless of other options, in the 2nd he had a quick look and then ran forward and kicked it.
You see it in a few other passages as well, they cut out that one extra handball in favour of running forward and it made the world of difference

I genuinely didn't realise Tom Mitchell played yesterday. May have been the confusion with Worpell (both smaller, shaven headed, inside midfielders who like to handball with there left) but he had very little impact on the game despite having it 27 times.

IT may sound silly but our team yesterday had a few passengers. IT was very much a top 8 side where our stars dominated with few role players and a few passengers. Sucks for our bottom 4/6 and an area we should always be looking to improve on but a great team effort overall.

Probably making no sense at all but meh
