Prediction Round 16 Port Changes vs Crows

Garner strikes me as a player that will adjust to the extra pace of afl if given enough time but he needs that time. I'm confident he will become a solid defender for us when he gets a consistent opportunity.

Yeah this is the constant paradox with a number of our younger players. They need to develop skills/pace/strength/consistency at AFL level, and we do that by yoyoing them between firsts and seconds. So how does that help exactly?

YES RILEY BONNER GETS ANOTHER GAME!! so exciting the speed he provides out the back, tackling pressure, head over the ball dead eye dick with the kicks! PS he just loves these big games when the heat is on put him on jenkins

Best showdown effort was running straight past Betts in the defensive 50, allowing Betts to calmly slot the goal before Jenkins poster. That effort alone should have seen him delisted

And you know this exactly how? How do you know what Garner’s role in the team was, what he was actually asked to do and whether he was keeping the game close?

I’m not saying he wasn’t, but if he’s being dropped after two matches - like he was for Hawthorn after his debut - doesn’t that tell you that there is a fundamental flaw in his game?

If you look at where the defenders got their possessions, there’s a correlation between Byrne-Jones, Clurey and Bonner getting most of their possessions on the same wing - in exactly the same location (on the left hand boundary) - that Garner was on at half back when we were pushing up the ground.

Hartlett, Burton and Jonas were more evenly spread, with Burton and Jonas on the opposite side of the ground.

So it took four defenders on one side to try to do what two were doing on the other.

The question I have is - what was Garner doing pushing up to a wing (he got 3 of his possessions there) when Bonner was stuck in defence? It should have been the other way around.
You're right we don't know what the coaches are thinking. Or what flaws he has to his game. All we can rely on is what we see on the park. You can dance around all you want with your theories/knowledge etc and I'm sure you do much more homework than me but what I see is a guy that plays football the way I would expect from a Port player unlike some of the others that have stayed in the side.
How about these for some huge fundemental flaws. We have so many players who have one good week and too many bad weeks. That's been happening for a long time now. We seem to change gamestyles every year. How about the actual only proof in the pudding with our ladder positioning over a long time now. That tells me the main and most important fundemental flaw needing to be looked at is in the coaching.

Well, I knew Kane Farrell was getting dropped the moment he got caught out in no mans land in a turnover at defensive 50. It was rubbish defending and I said as much at the time - the sort of defensive effort that Polec would give.

As far as last game was concerned if it wasn't a storm bucket we would have won.

Their defense held up well due to the weather aiding it.

No excuse though but still ...

little concerned SPP is being pushed out.
In the 2s again and when hes in the AFL played in the wrong position.

Rocky boak and gray nearing the end. would hate to see SPP go now

Absolutely agree, I think he has a load of potential. We’ve seen how good and damaging he can be.

If Cow Country Ken had bothered to devise and impliment a wet weather gameplan in his seven years at the club, we shouldve won

To be fair we've had our share of good wet weather wins. I'm certainly not on the Hinkley wagon, but I'm chalking up our display last week to being much more the players' fault.

This whole line of thinking is null and void regardless given we destroyed the reigning premier at their home ground in wet weather. Just file it under typical what happen power inconsistency and move on.

Survival selections.

Garner is far too high quality to leave in the SANFL.
The dumbest thing is each year when he stops doing the survival selections and picks on form / younger players, we improve. Ok, going for survival instead of long term development would be a choice, but they're the same bloody thing at the moment, yet picks Sam Gray, Motlop and Bonner again. The only upside is he's digging his own grave that bit deeper.
