Autopsy Round 9 vs Essendon plus changes

I know McBean needs to be managed carefully but maybe it is time he played in the seniors. He is not your typical tall forward, he kicks goals by crumbing the ball and he is good below his feet, by reports. We could try playing McBean as a forward only and use Maric and Vickery in the ruck. McBean could take McGuane's position in the team. McBean might not have the body to win marking contests one on one but the ball hitting the ground in the forward line, is where McBean should have the advantage over his opponent. McBean leading to space would give the midfielders a target to kick to as well, similar to Aaron Edwards.

Like your thinking, and McBean could be one out of the box. But he could also fold into a box.
Not sure which game he could debut - if at all this year - but coming up against Darren Glass and company probably isn't ideal. And I think of Todd Elton in his debut versus Adelaide.
If McGuane does have a rest, you'd think Azza would get the call up.

I'd début McBean against a GWS where it's most likely he won't get out muscled like he will against a mature defender.

Elton vs Adelaide was a disaster last year. Need to learn from that.

It's time to see what Azza can bring to the table.

Would be happy to see A Edwards get a game for McGuane. Don't think it's been warranted to this point of the year but time to see if he can offer anything. Orren should also be strongly considered.
I suspect Nahas will survive given we are playing at Subi and we'll need the extra run. Hopefully he's not wearing ice skates. Lonergan, just an average game but would prefer him to stay in. 1st game so worth another look and would be a mistake to swap him for yet another one-way player.

Dis look good:

OUT: Nahas, White, Lonergan, McGuane
IN: McDonough, Helbig, Dea and McBean

The kids!!!

Also, I want Griffiths and Elton in after the bye. I want McBean to get a taste of it as his form warrants it the most. He should be eased into it, so give him the game to see how he goes as that third tall forward.

Helbig plays in place of Lonergan as inside midfielder. Put him there for a full game please. We need to build him up and the depth of our midfield.

Dea just deserves a game, I would play him as a defensive forward. He has played a lot of forward in his junior days and is a very good mark. His defensive pressure would be great. Or he can go back and allow us another guy to provide run out of defense.

McDonough just give him game time at senior level, has tricks and is already better than Nahas.

Agree with half of this at least!

Not sure what McDonough's form was like prior to this week in the VFL but was really impressed with his game on the weekend and other bits and pieces I've seen of him. Ditto Dea. After an early howler, he looked pretty composed in a game where the defenders were under the pump all day. I would like to see him given a crack at an inside mid role at some stage (prob too late to do it now this year so next pre-season?)

Although I would love to see McBean, I fear the Eagles game isn't the right one to debut. He could get snapped in half. We have to be patient with him. My god, he could be anything. I hope we build his tank and play him as a wingman encouraged to push forward. I suspect Elton may be ahead of him but I don't reckon it will be this week.

Not convinced by Helbig in what I've seen of him. Seems sloppy by foot. I hope I'm missing something.

Don't think White should be dropped. He seemed to be one of the few guys to try and break the lines on the weekend. I would play him as the sub again. McGuane can't be judged on a weekend where our midfield was so comprehensively beaten. Was surprised Nahas was even named an emergency this week after his selfish performance last week against Melbourne. He is in serious doubt to ever pull on a Richmond jumper again which is a shame because he is a shell of the player who did some good work for us last year.

I just hope I see a different attitude next Monday. Even if we lose. I can handle a loss like the Fremantle one because at least we fought like buggery.
If we dish up what we did on Sat and the Eagles kick straight, we will lose by a lot (12+ goals) and I can't handle that.

Just so you all know, our Essendon friend hasn't got off, he got a week off, for some reason his name isn't red though.

Much love from the essendon board for doing that, he is a pest of the highest order

Out Nahas
In: who ever had the highest tackel count in the burgs

Hope conca comes back which is likely so take out White or sam

Agree. Though Astbury or Griff instead McBean. Astbury as a 3rd KPD and Batch plays loose with only 2 KPF's which should open the fwd line up. Or play Griff out of the square.

Save McBean for a game against Dogs or even better the Saints. Could dominate the Saints defence.

Either way please no Nahas or Lonergan would be a start.

Found it interesting reading today Hsun that Essendon only had 2 players who had double figured contested possessions .
Not surprised. They ran around on their own and half the time we kicked it to them by themselves. :p

We need to get tougher, I think we are really missing Tuck.
I like the idea of Lids returning to half back where he can be our quarter back, I would much rather him doing it then Rance. Houli can move onto the wing, he can be soft at times but has good hands most the time and would work well up on the wing with Grigg on the other wing. I think Arnott should come in to the side and replace Lonergan. From all reports he is a hard nut, which is what we need and would fill Tuckys boots nicely.

I noticed that McGuane was trialled in the ruck last week, I think that this spells trouble for Vickery, he might be due for a spell in the ressies, get his confidence back up. Edwards will come into the side to replace vickery.. he is due for a gig. Wouldn't mind seeing McBean getting a shot in the future.

Also wouldn't mind Griff getting a crack back into the side... he is useful with the kick-ins and could be an extra marking target around the ground.. seems to use the ball better then what Maric does when he gets it.

Just some thoughts, be kind :p

Needs to be a rule put in place where every player must lay a minimum of three tackles per game. Why has this become so difficult all of a sudden? Being ranked last for tackles with an average of 51 (see footywire) is something you'd expect to see from the likes of Melbourne or GWS. Pretty damning stat and I hope we're seriously doing something about it. WCE are ranked second with an average of 71 per game so I hope this is being addressed.

YOU DONT rate Astbury??, would love to see him in there somewhere, when hes fit and gets some footy in him hes gunna be in our top dozen players for sure...

Robbie Nahas surely must never ever play again. As stated above by richolovesgoal how is it possible that you can be a small forward in an AFL team when you aren't quick (takes small steps makes him seem faster than he is), you don't tackle (effort in the centre of the ground in the second quarter after he slipped over to cost us a goal was disgusting), and in a forward line which boasts 3 talls can never actually manage a crumb? It is staggering to think that the same player was having games of 35 touches and 3 goals in 2011.

Even though we recruited the mature age players in the rookie draft to cover depth to avoid what happened in the second half of last year, it still seems like we have one of the worst depths in the league. When I heard Ellis was out and had a look at the emergencies (Edwards, Nahas, Dea) I didn't want any of them to come in, and yes, perhaps we've had more injuries than last year and I suppose it depends on which position goes down but to me it still seems like whenever we lose first 22 player we always have to bring in a shite one.

Shaun Grigg is another one that I want to address. I know every week if you look at his stats it seems like he has been one of the better players, but for me thats an example of the stats lying. He gets pointless possessions that go no where. However, my biggest issue with him is that when he doesn't have the ball he just labours. He doesn't have a second gear and whenever it's his turn to go, he doesn't. Very very frustrating footballer.

We are in dire need of a small forward. An Eddie Betts, a Lindsey Thomas..just someone who can crumb off the packs..am sick of seeing all 3 talls flying to a contest for the ball to come to ground and be cleared easily out (how many times on Saturday?)

Changes will be interesting this week, would like to see Arnott get a run just to see if he can get the ball out and play a tuck-esque role inside because thats clearly what we were missing on Saturday, absolutely towelled up out of the middle again. Lonergan and Nahas would be the 2 that I would of thought will make way but does anyone think we're a chance to take Maric, Stephenson and Vickery in an attempt to combat Nic Nat and Cox?

This.

I don't think Conca will get up and without Tuck sadly we are heavily undermanned on the inside therefore I think Lonergan has to stay. He's obviously not the answer going forward though. Arnott is worth a shot but do we want to bring him against WCE @ Subi? If so it's a straight swap for Lonners.

Elton, McBean, McDonough etc. People calling for these players to come in have to understand we are playing at Subiaco in what will be an extreme pressure environment. The intensity from VFL to AFL will lift considerably. Has anyone seen McBean? He is a very skinny kid and not AFL ready. You see players make the transition all the time and are completely out of their depth. This just destroys their confidence. The Geelong model is perfect. Their players dominate at reserves level for weeks before getting a game in their seniors. We cannot just give games to these kids until they are dominating at that level consistently or they will be shown up in the big league. VFL to AFL is an enormous difference.

I'd like to see our FWD line tweaked as it has been dysfunctional in recent weeks. Mcguane has given 100% but he needs a rest therefore straight swap for Edwards. Give Azza a chance in the yellow and black and see if he can take some attention away from Riewoldt. He has a good kick and clean hands. Defensively he is poo though which is why I think Dimma has held back. Once again he is not the answer going forward but for the short term we need to change it up.

Vickery is on the verge of seeing some VFL football. I like him - he's frustrating but I think he's a player that will be their once we make our real premiership tilt. The bloke has all the tools. He's athletic, can take a grab and very agile. Can kick straight too. So why can't he put it together? It could be a confidence issue at the moment. I'd give him another week before we have to make a decision. We can't accept one week on, one week off right now. He's young still and big players take awhile to develop. Rodney Eade emphasized this on 360 last night. We need to be patient with these talls and manage them properly.

I'd like to see Nahas dropped but I think Dimma will play him whilst Ellis is out. We have no small forwards as it is and despite him being poo lately he is completely bereft of any confidence.

I'd like to see McDonough get a go as a pure forward, like Nahas.
And it could be argued he wouldn't do less than Nahas.
We need X factor badly.

Sounds kinda gay when you tag someone saying that. :p

I'll ring the club and let them know though. Have a feeling it's gunna hurt Monday either way. :(

Just bring da damn lube!

I'd probably keep White in as the sub also as Subi suits him. Came on against Freo and made an impact with the late goal over there.
