The St Kilda Football Club has today appointed a selection panel and a specialist advisory group to recruit a new senior coach.

The selection panel will meet for the first time tonight (Tuesday) with members of the St Kilda Football Club executive team to commence the recruitment process.

The St Kilda Football Club has undergone a significant period of growth and improvement over the last two years and this appointment is an important part of that progress going forward.

The recruitment program will be systematic and comprehensive and is expected to be complete in approximately four weeks.

The composition of the selection panel and the specialist advisory group reflects the values and qualities that are important to the St Kilda Football Club.

The selection panel will consist of:
- CEO, Michael Nettlefold;
- Head of Football, Chris Pelchen;
- Director and past-player, Nathan Burke; and
- NSW Institute of Sport Manager Coaching, Athlete and Program Services, Clare Prideaux.

The selection panel will be assisted by a specialist advisory group consisting of:
- Former AFL player, Brad Johnson will advise on football matters;
- Director and Managing Director of Coles, Ian McLeod who will advise on commercial matters; and
- Bluestone Edge Director, Pippa Grange who will advise on people, culture and leadership matters.

The members of the selection panel and the specialist advisory group have the experience and the skills to select the best person for the job.

The St Kilda Football Club is firmly focused on the future and is determined to put in place the best structure to maximize performance in the modern competition.

I hate Bigfootys cutoff for topic names, all I saw was "Saints Appoint Senior Coach"

Freaky stuff, moreso that I was hoping I saw Scott Watters :D

Pleased with that.

It's important to have some transparency in the process and I think we get that with the selection panel and advisory group listed. I was concerned we would not be utilising the services of people outside the club so I'm happy to see that.

I also like the expected timeline of four weeks given. We're the only club looking for a coach, and have an experienced head of football to make the list management decisions in the meantime, so there's absolutely no reason to rush this decision.

Four weeks? Seems like a long period considering that we're the last ones looking for a coach... Also looks like theres no one that has been a coach before in a panel which is worrying...

Let's hope they can find the best coach for us :)

Only one left, no need to rush.

Adelaide, Melbourne & Dogs all have their coach within 24-48hr of our position being open, it'd be negligent to appoint one in that time frame, Freo have filled theirs with ours for instant relief so there's simply no need to rush and 4 weeks is more then acceptable to canvass anyone left and interested in the role.

Represent.

I really like this wide spread approach they've taken with the selection committee. Marketability of the coach is a big thing for us.

4 weeks:eek::eek: You would think the new coach would want to be involved with the planning, recruiting , etc.. Unless those decisions are already made by the ones in charge....maybe they have/want too much control? Might put off a potential coach.

lyon was appointed 5 years ago in the middle of trade week. didn't make that much difference. besides, unless the coach can be appointed this week, its no point in him gettting involved alot with delistings ande week. as he won't know everything he should about the p[layers

Not even an ex premiership coach in this lot?! This type of approach looks on the surface to be professional but without the inclusion of an ex coach it smacks of amateurism.

When do they stop being an ex coach and start being a media "special comments" / analyst?

Johnson retired 2010, he fills the role from a playing & game perspective fine and is in a much better position to judge trends & the game today than some media rep pot shotting after a decade in the realm of public opinion. Amateur hour is taking a single line and drawing a conclusion when the process has only just begun.

Throw enough darts at an arse and chances are you'll pin it with it one of them.

Kinda agree, but would much rather we get the right coach over having a coach involved with recruiting. Hopefully Pelchen comes through with the goods and not only delivers the right coach but another strong draft to consolidate the one we appear to have from last year.

Confuscius is known for his clear thinking. Let's not rush this bit.

Brad Johnson... Nooooooooooooo!

Just jokes. The right candidate will select themselves. Always is the way when interviewing people.

Burke no slouch either. He probably has a better idea about what he wants from a coach than an ex-coach does. ( We all see the kind of "advice " Grant Thomas comes out with ).

Given that the new coach is unlikely to have much input into trade week, its probably already predetermined whether we will be rebuilding or soldieriing on. So the prosective coaches will have to come on board, rather than try to steer the ship.

Precisely, looking at it from Burkes point of view you have a director looking club wide (along with Nettles) as well as the past game during his time as a contrast to Johnsons now and recent history. Adding in an ex coach effectively only creates a "too many chiefs, not enough indians" pretext where the focus is too much on AFL and an AFl coach than it is a representative, an orator, a leader, a revolutionary, a marketable commodity.

As has been said numerous times before by numerous different people, AFL is a business, these clubs are a business, an AFL coach is more than a person who can just coach AFL.

Look closely at the roles of each person on the panel. I reckon its just a cover to throw everyone off whats really happening. If we have already got a coach, then there is no need to have ex coach on the panel....

I doubt but would be stoked if they made the appointment before the Trade Period, Delistings, and Nat Draft - the new coach should be involved....
Thing is, I don't know how much of a say Pelchin gets - will he override the senior coach in player movements ?

Maybe but they would have limited knowlege regarding the capabilities of our existing list.

How much would we expect Lyon to know about the fringe players/and WAFL players on Fremantle's list?

You may be right - but scouting and viewing tapes of opp teams means that clubs have a strong knowledge of opp strengths/weaknesses. Some clubs assistants have a primary role as Opp Analysts (as well as forward scouts)

Apparently Eade doing special comments on radio a few weeks ago, displayed a surprisingly good knowledge of Saints players.

Even back when Wallace won the Rich job, he put up an overhead of their best side in positions with a few gaps where they needed to recruit/trade.

I bet you these applicants for the vacant coaching positions would, in their presentations, need to display a very good grasp on the playing group.
