It's another sad aspect of human nature that people tend not to like what they don't understand, and since they associate Chinese culture with Chinese, they don't like Chinese peoples.

Those people would be:
1) White
2) Tending older
3) Tending regional/rural
4) Loyal LNP/ON voters
5) Little to no exposure to cultures besides their own
6) Socialised in a racist/bigoted culture

In that context, it's not surprising that they'd treat 'the other' with hostility. It is unacceptable, but these people need to be educated regarding why their views are wrong. Calling them all sorts of names in response, while cathartic, will make them dig in their heels, so it's counterproductive in the long run.

In the interests of disclosure, one of best friend's was from Nanjing. Another childhood friend came out. My step-brother came out. I lost contact with the first guy, but the latter two I treat just like any other person. As it should be.

Your stance on this issue is admirable, I believe that it is genuinely held, and I would ardently hope that you believe my attitude regarding the matter is acceptable.

There are many in the Asian community that do not like the Chinese.

Because those trucker protests are as consequential as the Canberra protests recently. Ie they're not. The vast majority of Canadians are vaccinated, including truckers, the majority support mandates, the majority want the disruptive protests to end, the far right organising these protests have nowhere near the level of influence as they do in the US.

Just because Fox News, Joe Rogan, Shapiro and all the conspiracy pushers in the US are saying it's a widely supported revolution doesn't make it so.

Heard on All Things Considered on NPR about the location that some of these grift pages are run. One of the large anti mandate FB pages tied to the protests in Canada is run by a Bangladeshi marketing firm.

The very folks who tell everyone to do their research are too stupid to do it themselves and are getting conned big time.

But yes, in the lead up to an election there is absolutely no political value in discussing (therefore validating) some shitty protests in Canada.

Yes, I'm fully aware that Indonesians treat Chinese with suspicion. So do the Vietnamese due to having a rivalry going back thousands of years.

I know that Chinese and Indians don't care for one another, and that many Chinese (understandably) loathe the Japanese for historical reasons, while the Japanese look down on them.

My own mother is a Malaysian Eurasian and she's never cared for the Chinese.

The problem the LNP has is that them having a go at China might cheer up other ethnic groups...until they witness the consequences of such bellicose behaviour personally, which a few will.

Put simply, I think the LNP's approach to China drifts too close to ON-style xenophobia/racism. Vietnamese won't have an issue with anti-China sentiment, but there's a fine line between that and generalised xenophobia, and I don't think the LNP think things through enough to prevent such accusations.

BTW, I was just using the Chinese as an example.

I actually think this is a good thing in general.

Maybe not in this context, but in terms of the greater good it makes it so much harder to scam ordinary folk.
Im on the fence as I’m not really that knowledgeable in this area beyond the obvious stuff that has been linked to crypto, as you mentioned scams as well as a lot of dark money being funneled through crypto.

Still it’s interesting seeing a country outright ban it and it’ll be even more interesting how they will enforce this ban.

And yet they will still cop it from racists who will lump all Asians/foreigners together and be emboldened thanks to the dog whistling of Scomo.

Asia is just as politically complex as Europe is yet many people seem to think all Asians are alike.

Change of subject.......here is something the LNP won't do...........

I think in the next couple of years this country has a chance to really bring a few issues together and tidy them up. If we want to.
The Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2017 recommended an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
I think the "Indigenous Voice to Parliament" should REPLACE the current office of the "Governor General".
The "Indigenous Voice to Parliament" would be able to send any law back to Parliament that was not seen to be in the best interests of
First Nations People. The "Voice" would be elected by First Nations People. The "Voice" would have the power, in certain circumstances,
just like the Governor General now, to be able to dismiss the Government.
Under this model - the "Voice" would be a First Nations Elder chosen by First Nations People. They would NOT be elected by the Australian
people NOR be chosen by the Parliament.
This would offer recognition and a great opportunity for healing and a fresh start for this country.
This model could work under our current system, so long as Charlie goes along with it, or else it could work under a republican system.

Now lets see how racist you lot really are ?

Does anyone think we will have any debates between SmoCo and Albanese during the election campaign?
Slommo will out talk albo.
Unfortunately for Labor they can't afford for albo to be in a debate on live television.
He just can't make points that entice the Joe blow average to change.
Slommo is to fast on his feet in the lying game.
Albo makes great points but they are boring to the ordinary and only understood by the welded ons.

Labor need Jostling Jimmy Chalmers at the top.
They are just to scared to make the obvious change.

Not a hope in hell.
I’m already a slow mover on indigenous issues and disagree that they get some special status (by this voice to parliament). But as Chinese background immigrant it’s also not really my issue and not my historical guilt.

They are not just that demo.

Head to the outer suburbs, and the same people who think Muslims are all (or at least personally know) terrorists think Asians are stealing our land and our culture

Just look at this board.

It wasn't boomers banging on about eugenics. It wasn't boomers saying the natural superiority of western culture is being discriminated against. It wasn't boomers pushing the Great Replacement Theory. It wasn't boomers supporting the Proud Boys and their ilk.

Growing up in Frankston in the 80s and 90s, it was a sea of white (cultural diversity was the kid from the UK who migrated here), and there was a strong undercurrent of racism towards Aboriginals, brown people, and Asians.

I don't believe this will have changed much, considering the Southern Cross Tat brigade is mostly Gen Y

A Chinese background doesn't mean it's not your historical problem, you're Australian and this is a issue we have to deal with collectively. My family didn't arrive here until 1971 but we've certainly taken our share of spoils from indigenous dispossession and recognise this.

If I was Morrison I wouldn't be boasting about being the son of a Sydney copper from the 60s like it was a good thing although you can see where he first encountered the idea that rules don't apply to him. One thing he appears to have well learned from his old man though is how to gleefully use the LGBTQI+ community as a punching bag, a croft finely honed by NSW Police after many decades of practice.

Firstly, I don't think these election debates are overly important in swinging votes. Only politically engaged people tend to watch them and they've already made their minds up.

Second, I think you're over-estimating Morrison's ability as a public speaker. I know he's self-assured liar, but he's actually very inarticulate. The amount of times I've seen him stumble over and mispronounce easy, scripted words. And then any time his narrative is questioned, he either goes to water or else goes completely feral. You note that Albo is a bit ''boring'' but I'm confident that Morrison's loud emptiness isn't going to move the needle in his direction much either.

Albo does not need to 'win the election'' in any debates, he just needs to concentrate on a few major policies Labor will focus on/do differently and absolutely hammer Morrison for his failures. He's more than capable of doing that. Whilst I also wouldnt mind something younger, perhaps a bit more charismatic in the ALP leader seat, Albo has proven to be fairly unflappable and largely on point. My confidence in his ability to hold his own in this election is growing.

and 3) how visibly the LNP are falling apart. Voters are less inclined to vote for parties that appear unable to govern themselves, especially if the opposition looks relatively stable and isn't putting forth any scary policies, which Albo hasn't.

I think your analysis is quite good, but not this bit here. At least, depending on what you mean by unable to govern themselves.

The last leader that was elected PM and made it to the end of their term was Howard in 07, 15 years ago. In the five elections since, only one government actually fell after changing leaders. If you go all the way back to Keating in 91, then there have been 6 elections where the government changed leaders before their term was up, and 5 where the leader made it to the end.

Of those, the government has been returned 5/6 times when they switched, but only 3/5 times when they remained stable.

Aussies love themselves some political drama, and will typically fall over themselves to reward governments that provide entertainment, despite their moaning.

Even in this election, pretty much everyone is in agreement that the LNP would stand a better chance if they switched leaders now. It's a weird cultural thing.

You speak like it’s all still in the past , it’s still an ongoing issue just look at the closing the gap imitative to realise the chasm between us and ordinary Australians …australia still remains the only western country in the world to still not have a treaty despite us campaigning it for years and years…. And it’s only has been the last 50 odd years that we are legally recognised as being human beings.

What a brain dead take …special status
