Review Semi final vs Hawthorn - Ugly, Historically Embarrassing and Pathetic

I’m already frustrated watching this suns game. Suns look amazing.
Noah Anderson, so much polish. ROWELL??? Who does that for us.
We are just lacking so much, not sure how we were minor premiers.

In saying that, I am very proud of the boys. We are growing but just lacking so much. I am not always this negative 🤣

I don't accept that it's purely personnel, Hawthorn have one a grade midfielder out there last night same as us. There was an absolute lack of aggression at the contest or urgency whatsoever.

Cornes - the finals will hold the Crows in good stead? How so, if we couldn't even win 1 out of 8 quarters & Nicks still has nfi what to do.
Must be Graham, he’s senile.

This will be the opposite, there are going to be mental demons these players carry. No matter how well they are going all season, if we are likely to make finals there will be doubts.

There will also have to be doubt about Nicks, players aren’t stupid

Soligo has started falling over in almost every contest
Funny thing I noticed with him last night - for (at least) the first half he was wearing the orange boots, so he was pretty easy to pick out (with all his errors)...

Late in the game he switched to green ones, and started getting some of the ball. Have to wonder if he had the short stops in at the start?

You reckon it’s definitely his last year? Bare minimum at draft, Crouch is 1, Burgess likely 2. Only 1 more goes.
I bloody hope that was Smithers last game.

He's been a stalwart for the club, was one of my favorites, but the last two seasons have tainted his legacy. He shouldn't have been picked last night, full stop.

I'm hoping Reid does us all a huge favor and tell Smithers and Murph they're not getting a contract next year, so that the temptation of Nicks selecting them for an AFL game is taken away.

Aaaaagh so bxxxxxy painful. Quite a few references in here about our mental weakness.
Seems I have heard that before……..and we had a remedial Camp to fix it ! Hmmm.

Get rid of Nicks, he is lollipop stuff.

Neil Balme needs actually do what he's been recruited to do.
:confusedv1: ... what's he been recruited to do, please?
I saw him on The Front Bar a couple weeks ago. He said he was retired and the Crows called him up and asked him to contribute in some vague way that he did not specify (that I could tell).
My understanding was he's on the Board, unpaid, part-time, with no decision-making power at all.

Either he's got more power/influence than he was letting on, or he's not doing much or even expected to.

We just bombed out in the finals not winning a quarter and we don’t need to change our system? Right.

Our system was good enough to get us to 1st. We were on an 8 game winning streak before lost one of our two most important players to a scandal that rocked the club.

Our rise is extremely close to Brisbanes. In 2018 Brisbane finished 15th. In 2019 they won 9 out of their last 10 and finished 2nd (by percentage) on the ladder before going out in straight sets.

Would we have been smashed if we had lost the clearances against Collingwood? You’ve ignored this again.

Absolutely not.

We wouldn't have. We smashed them in the clearances in our 10 point loss. They smashed us in the clearances 52-38 when we beat them by 3 points.

We won the clearances in the final and lost.

Our success as a team isn't reliant on winning clearances. It's 100% on our ball movement and turnovers.

Clearances are a major part of football, to say they don’t matter is dumb.

Not really. There are plenty of things that matter a hell of a lot more to our success than clearances.

Why are you ignoring how shit he is around the ground?

I am not. I have said he had a shocker against the Hawks.

His form towards the end of the year was poor and was towelled up a few ruckman, he’s even admitted it and I’m the one digging in? lol

Yeah - his form dipped. Even if his form was at mid season level we still go out in straight sets.

We went out in straight sets because we didnt have Rachele / Rankine and Dawson completely shat the bed.

Something that stood out to me was Thithorpe pulling a face when they were lined up for the National Anthem.
I noticed that, too. It amused me.
His reaction after he kicked a goal was an exaggerated version of that.
We forget that while he looks fearsome and has built a solid frame, he's just turned 23.
A big kid, really. Very big!
I think he is a great player but I feel like that said alot about our mindset and how seriously we took things.
Maybe "he", not "we"?
At the time, I thought that maybe Nicks had chilled a little and told them to have some fun, or that RT was just trying to put off an opponent.

Then the game started ... and we both know the rest :sadv1: .

I’m not sure how much I trust those stats, hawthorn had three goals on the board without it going past the centre through clearance to newcomb then you have Rob turning over a sure f50 entry late.

Rewatch the first 5 minutes. Berry was beaten by Newcombe on a 50 / 50 ball for one clearance (and goal). Berry gave away a free kick in the middle to Newcomb (for a goal). Then Woz giving away the deliberate free kick for goal #3.

He absolutely does matter and it’s hurting us.
4 out of the 5 teams left have a better ruck/player than us.

I think there is a long list of players that matter much much much more.

We lost our primary dangerous small forward and centre dynamo, lost the other small forward dynamo weeks earlier and the midfield went to sh*t in both clearances, transition and forward entries.

Our kicking into the forward line was horrendous for both finals

The most disappointing thing was we knew what was coming. We knew what finals pressure was like from the week before. We knew the Hawks would bring the same.

Lack of finals experience? Bullshit. We didn't learn anything from the week before.

Worse, we lacked desperation considering it was a knockout final. As the game started to slip away we didn't give a yelp. There was just a surrender to the inevitable, waiting for this limping dog of a team to be put out of its misery.

Good:
Set shot goalkicking
Milera was great, MM was rusty but good.
Laird was one of the few which looked at a finals intensity

Bad:
Phew... centre clearances, contest, tackling pressure, work rate, marking. Literally every aspect of our game.

Ugly:
Impey outmarking Dan Curtin said it all.

Finishing top and coughing up that performance was nothing short of a disaster.

We finished hopelessly out of form; Soligo, Berry, Curtin, Fogarty, Keane, ROB and Dawson were nowhere near the level they hit during the season

Our system wasn’t good enough to win a quarter in two finals, you can’t just keep saying our system doesn’t rely on winning clearances and it’s successful.

They smashed us in clearances and we won, giving up 71 inside 50s. You don’t think if Collingwood played like they did in the final and had those inside 50s they wouldn’t have smashed us? Cmon.

Why do teams try to win clearances if it’s not important? Maybe they want the ball heading in the direction of their forward line and not the other way.

His form dipped, he was torched in a number of late games. He can’t kick, he’s not a good mark, tell me, what is he actually good at? You reckon clearances aren’t important, so we don’t need his ruck work, he doesn’t contribute around the ground, worse he’s an actual liability.

I’m not saying he’s the reason we lost, but he didn’t help us win, I’m saying he’s bad at football and we would be better if we had a ruck that could actually play football.

Plus a couple more. It’s weird that we play our biggest game in 7 years and they suddenly have no opinion on us.

I don't really care if people want some time to process this bullshit, it's genuinely deflating.

The bit that annoys me is that some of our fans have to get so head of us actually achieving anything in being insufferably arrogant.

Just listened to Nicks’ presser. His whole demeanour was very much channeling Ken’s “finals are scary” mantra.

If your board has any spine, and if they’ve learnt anything from our 13 years of waste, they will pull the plug before the damage becomes irreparable…
They won't.

They beat us in clearances by 6, it’s not that big a deal. They had 25 more disposals for 21 more inside 50s and 14 more scoring shots. That comes down to system and ball movement. The raw clearance numbers weren’t the primary issue, it’s what we did with the ball when we had it in our hands.

I’m saying had Collingwood smashed us in clearances in the final, along with how they beat us everywhere else, they would have smashed us

Its not necessarily the clearance number, Hawthorn's were clean.... ours were always rushed.
