I'm going to be brave & predict a closer result than most would agree with, even though the paps have won the last few showdowns most have been intense & reasonably close games.

Port have some injury concerns where as we have confidence & skill concerns so i'm praying for the lift in pride & form from our senior players in Roo, Macca, Carey, Smart & hopefully Hart (if he is at least 90% fit) to infect the rest of the squad to at least make a contest of the game & not let it become a blow-out.

Surely Schuback needs to come in for Burns given his SANFL form.

Ladhams & Reilly would be very doubtful given their respective injuries.

I agree that JT should come straight back in if fit rather than via South given he has only missed 1 week of football.

Hart is a strong chance of playing. Would play him, even if we can only get a half out of him with a lack of match fitness givens we badly need some leadership support for Roo.

Welsh should be reasy to resume too, but given his poor form prior to injury, I reckon we would be better off playing him at Westies & keeping Jericho.

If the conditions are fine, I would consider playing Rutten at FF to stretch the Port backmen.

Agree that Burns & Bock should be definite outs. Should also consider dropping either Edwards or Macca to send a message ... though given it is a showdown that may have to wait another week.

I just really cant see how the Crows will get thumped on the weekend.

Theres been one outright drubbing in the last 4 years and that was early 2001.

How bout some reasons why Port will thump the Crows this week?


Ill give you some reasons why the Crows will either get very very close or actually win.

1) You have the vast majority of your midfield playing. We have our 4 best midfielders missing.

2) If Tredrea is held well by Mcgregor/Perrie/Whoever then we dont have many other avenues to goal at the moment...especially not tall options.

3) Its a Showdown and they are traditionally close no matter what position on the ladder either side is.


It definately wont be a walkover. Tredrea generally has never had an outstanding game against Adelaide. Hes usually taken lots of marks (average about 8 or 9 a game against the Crows since first showdown of 2001) but hes never kicked a bag of 4+ against you before. Tredrea is in career best form so if you stop him i reckon youll win the game.

Considering he is our only viable proper forward up there (i dont count Lade...or Thurstans) then i reckon he may be double teamed.

I dunno...i can just see the Crows getting up. Unexpected but it will kick start your season.

As I said on the other board I think Hart Goodwin Biglands Mark Stevens Reilly Welsh almost even things out, plus we have Ladhams Torney injured and Scott Stevens facing a test.

Not even close to evening things out. As I said on the other thread, in a list of quality based on Ports' injuries, only Goodwin and Hart could be seen as the equal of Pickett and Carr. The rest of your outs would really stuggle to make the first 22 of any of the top teams.

So Port can therefore use their best skills to spank us into the cosmos. Could be a real thrashing but knowing most showdowns of late it might not be. Be a real treat if we pulled this one from our butt and won it. Very unlikely and I'll tip Port by 55points.

In terms of ins and outs, ud have to make a good 3 changes Id say at least. That team that played against Geelong must not together again. We could do with some more talls given weather will be clear, Rutten might come in handy this time but I prolly wouldnt pick him ang going tall against Port isnt the logical answer. I think Ladhams will be injured damnit as he was def ready to come back in. SO:

IN <-- Hart, Smart, Schuback, Skipworth (slim chance)
OUT --> Bock, Burns, Perrie, Jericho (spose he should be kept)

What a load of crap. We have just as many players out of our team than Port. Both sides missing:

- ruckmen: Primus v Biglands
- forwards: Pickett v M Stevens, Welsh (?)
- defenders: Hardwick, Kingsley (?) v Hart (?), Torney (?)
- midfield: Francou, Carr, James(?) v Goodwin, Reilly, Ladhams

The difference is Port have better depth in their squad to cover the players out.

The bottom line is we are both missing a similar amount of players, but you are bale to replace yours better with your depth. Also, reckon your a bit biased & selective in your assessment of respective qualities of the players.

No doubt Primus is better than Biglands, but in value lost to their teams the gap is smaller (as you have better replacements).

M Stevens loss to the Crows is far, far great than Pickett for Port, as it has thrown out our whole forward structure. For us it is the equivalent of taking Tredrea out of the Port team (& no I'm not saying M Stevens = Tredrea). He is easily the player most missed from our side.

Also, why not just take a random year from the last 5 into consideration. Your using laast year for Hardwick & this year for Kingsley. If that's the case, why not compare Welsh when he was our leading goal-kicker...

I'll cop to the allegation of bias. Also, you won't get any argument from me on our list being deeper. However, my central argument, that we have lost more in terms of quality remains.

The fact that the Crows rely so heavily on Stevens shows lack of quality even in their starting 18.

The one thing that I'll defend myself on is adopting the standard that I did for Hardwick and Kingsley.

In relation to Hardwick, I'll expand on what I said above, we have not seen his form this season because of injury, thus we cannot judge him on that yet. last year is all we have. I will accept that it is possible (even probable) that he will not be as good this year as last but I can't say that yet.

As for Kingsley, he sucked last year. However, this season his form has improved immeasurably and is a walk up start in our team this year. Hence my belief that he is better than Torney on this year's form.

Anyway, how about we both admit or bias and hope for a cracker of a game?

Torney has been injured for most of this year & was a regular in our 22 last year, so he is in a similar situation to Hardwick.

I cerrtainly hope it is a cracker of a game as that would mean most of players would have pulled their finger out!

Aren't we better off talking about the players that will be out there.
