The AFL is run so poorly. Yet another compromised draft!! Don't worry about the Dees being pi$$ed off as we are a minnow club like GC. But I'm sure Adelaide and Carlton will be furious after doing the live trade last year. Absolute joke. The AFL will not admit they fu**ed up by having a team in a soulless town where no sporting team has ever worked before. The AFL won't stop until GC have a full list of 1st round draft picks and they become successful. The current administration needs to be overthrown asap before they completely ruin this game.

I think they need help, but far more as it pertains to their off field administration

Get the off field stuff sorted, get good systems in place, get the right people into admin roles, and good things will happen.

Look at Brisbane, they had terrible trouble with player retention. Then they got Fagan, Luke Hodge, cleaned out the dead weight in administration, got a new CEO and not only did their player exodus stop, but good players want to go there. They are arguably becoming a destination club.

I have long through Tony Cochrane is not the right man to be president of that club. Being aggressive and combative might work in some facets of business, but when you are dealing with homesick kids and wanting to build a culture and a club that people want to be at, a guy with more emotional intelligence would seem to be a better fit.

Get the right people in place, get the right systems in place, and they players will start buying in and wanting to remain there

Yeah I'm pissed off, because I know if sides that haven't played finals for a long time like Carlton and St Kilda had picks 2 and 3 they wouldn't have given Gold Coast the priority pick. And god help the AFL if Collingwood were 2nd last and someone like Eddie with power would take them on.

Instead it's Melbourne, the one club that hasn't had a big AFL/Government cash injection for a dedicated training base and one of the clubs that relies on getting an extra share of league finances, that is easily shafted.

Should Melbourne be better and not need the pick - absolutely. Could Melbourne jump up the ladder and make pick 2 as a requirement look silly - maybe, but that's how it works sometimes. When the Cats had a down year and got Hawkins as a father son and Selwood at pick 7 they could only change the rules after the fact.

And yes a lot of people will point to tanking. To that I say tanking was a legitimate strategy that almost have the league used at some stage. Including the beloved GWS who spent their first 3 years in the comp being absolutely hopeless in front of 3 men and a dog in the stands to build a super list. Melbourne were the only side investigated for tanking and punished for it when so many other clubs did it and even had people admit it. And why did Melbourne tank - because they were genuinely hopeless in 2007 and 2008 but didn't get a first round priority pick because Carlton tanked the living daylights out of the Kreuzer cup. So when it got to late 2009 they decided if it's good enough for Carlton it's good enough for them to get what they were going to get the year before. Then when so many Melbourne draft picks went to dust - through both bad management and some terrible luck - and the Dees were right down the bottom again it was more compromised drafts with list concessions for the new teams.

So whilst Melbourne's list isn't terrible they had a genuinely awful season and pick 2 should be the pay off. Certainly if Essendon got pick 1 for being awful after players were missing on doping bans then Melbourne can have their rightful pick 2 for being crud. If the Gold Coast wants pick 2 so badly then they've got a stack of young talent on their list to trade for it. Ben King alone might be a fair trade, or Ben King and something. When Melbourne were dreadful under Roos they had to pay overs for late career rentals for the likes of Bernie Vince and take on unwanted veterans like Daniel Cross and Jeffy Garlett. Plus they made the Tyson/Salem trade in an attempt not to ruin the career of another top 5 pick and to get instant improvement. When Gold Coast are dreadful despite a very talented squad with a lot of high drafts picks they just get a charity pick?

If they Crows weren't such a bloody rabble at the moment, they would've been on the front foot in the media for the last 2 months, telling all and sundry that this was a load of crap, and we wouldn't accept it.

But we're soft, compliant and shambolic, so meh.

Right result.

Curiously Melbourne Demons supporters are ironically the most vocal opponents of it, year-after-year. “fu** you, got mine”.

The very definition of...

Obviously the side that finished 17th on the ladder is going to be the most vocal critic of it. This isn't a nuanced take at all lol.

How do you know Melbourne and Adelaide haven't complained or brought up their objections to the AFL commission about the Suns getting picks 1 and 2 ? Pretty sure the Dees have, going by Goodwin's comments a few weeks ago, it's just that they don't throw a public tantrum about it, like Eddie McGuire or Jeff Kennett.

Anyhow the Crows pick was part of a pick swap/trade with Carlton, have they actually got a legitimate claim to complain about the Suns Priority Pick ?

I don't really go on BigFooty anymore - as I have lost quite a bit of interest over the years in football as Carlton is permanently log-jammed in the bottom half of the ladder.

But let me just look at the stats:

the Suns have only got 2 wooden spoons and won 3 games this year. Oh how dreadful!

16th, 18th, 16th, 14th, 18th, 13th etc...Carlton's ladder positions in recent years. Not really dreadful like it is for Gold Coast supporters...but instead that's a bundle of fun!

Oh but that's ok...as Carlton now has "a good coach" and a couple of "good players"...so no assistance is required.

So from what I am understanding- Carlton has been as bad - if not worse - than Gold Coast over the last 5-6 years & gets no assistance, but Gold Coast will get it. Yep, and you wonder why people lose interest in the game.

Does the AFL have favoured teams or do they treat every team with equal consideration? I think we all know the answer to that one.
I hope the Suns get annihilated in every single match they play next year if only to scuttle the biased plans of the AFL.

Melbourne were worse when they applied for a priority pick only for it to be knocked back. Gold Coast get one just because Gil wants them to have one. The AFL taken away the older system where they had no control, and implemented a system whereby the AFL make decisions by their own discretion. The Same decision makers that have ruined the game. The current administration is an absolute shambles.

Rightfully so. Dees have missed out on a quality kid just because the AFL have decided GC need a priority pick, a year after they traded Jarrod Lyon for peanuts, and were involved in other futures trades where the GC were bent over.

GCS looked alright when we played them this year- we escaped with victory by a single, solitary point after a fluke Tommy Macdonald score.

I don't mind GCS getting a start of first round Priority Pick but only if we get one as one as well.

it's one player; it's really not going to fix any of their issues

it's been telegraphed since they lost a few on the bounce after starting the season strongly that this was always going to be the outcome

am i disappointed? sure...but i'm far more disappointed that we're in the position to be 'dudded' out of a pick

it's all a lottery - you've no idea what they're going to be like by the age of 22-27, which is when you want them to be good

This year (even tho its one player) will help if they can get the two best mates to play together. Unlikely to happen again in future if drafted by separate teams.

Hopefully the suns administration have lined up introductions with two other gold coast local best friends or sisters eg CDD2D6EE-F8FF-4D4D-890B-894E668B4410.jpeg

Lets look at past Drafts to see positions don't mean everything.
2 Lukosius 2 Bradshaw 2 Taranto 2 Schache
3 Rankin 3 Dow 3 McCluggage 4 Oliver
9 Naughton 17 Berry 12 Curnow

Early picks do not guarantee you get the best player.
Personally I think the PP should be after bottom four teams picks.
From what Ive seen Rowell is the only stand out player .
Next 5 or 6 very even.

Of course giving them one more selection isn’t going to fix all of their issues, but it is one measure of many that will help them by guaranteeing them good performance in the interim, and then hopefully elite performance in the long term.

Offering Brad Crouch some overinflated contract would also help, at show they can attract quality players albeit through almost purely financial means.

They need to look at teams (like Adelaide, maybe Freo?) who don’t look like making a sustained push for finals and see if they can wrangle some decent players.

what a crock of shit.

more talented players heading to a neon shithole where their talents will be wasted. no one watches their games and most of their players don't develop until they inevitably request a trade. they are binjuice NOW so high picks isn't gonna do anything. they need some solid experienced afl standard players. although it would be better if they just closed down the shambles and started again in tasmania

i didn't realise Carlton had an academy like Sydney has and the COLA
Nah, you just have a net advantage in your annual talent recruiting pool. You know the state that produces far more players per
team than NSW does. So you don't have to pay them as much and have a higher opportunity to retain them....

Perhaps, if there was some type of system, where interstate clubs could retain the limited players from their geographical area, so they didn't have to pay massive overs, just to field a football team. hmmmm

They wouldn't give us 1 after a 2 win season, no way GC should be getting one now. All it will achieve is to shuffle everyone else down the list for no reason.

Ah that old chestnut, unfortunately for the Swans the AFL saw through that crap with the Franklin deal

What a complete load of shiite the COLA was and it's just plain embarrassing seeing a Sydney fan crying foul over handouts. LEt's face it, the only way Sydney can make the finals is with their snouts in the trough.
