Port have a lot of "nearly" guys right now. Polec, Ryder, Ebert, Gray and Dixon are all about the mark without really commanding a position just yet. Gray's a funny one, most Port supporters would say he's well down on form since last year, yet his small forward numbers don't lie.

Also an interesting anomaly that Port have the best defence in the AFL by a fair margin so far, yet have no defenders in the conversation.

Hombsch would be the only one guys outside of Port know a bit about but Clurey has been amazing this year.

You guys have probably been the same as the rest of us.
In terms of mids, from Port we saw Wines start very well and be on AA pace, with Ebert also having a very good and consistent opening month. But i doubt anyone could deny Ebert is well and truly on AA pace after incredible consistency and a number of BOG's.
When u arnt flashy or talk of the town it can take a little longer to be noticed.
Walks into a bench spot for mine. Last night's BOG was just icing on the cake that finally brought the recognition in his 200th.

Ryder amongst a pack of guys in line for one ruck slot. No standouts.
Wines marginal. Likely squad but unlikely the 22. Remember there are only 8ish slots between 18 clubs. Just one mid is good.
Gray marginal too as you say. A few outstanding games mixed with a few he went totally missing. Well documented he's likely restrained but doing a great job ploughing on and contributing more than enough. AA though ?... probably not but squadworthy.
Polec ?. Unlikely. Very Very good mid season required to push selection.

Ryder would be AA ruck ATM.

Mumford the main challenger.
Is mumford really the main challenger though? I watched Grundy towell him up in the Gws Collingwood game?

I think theres more than 2 challengers this season. Big boy before last night was even a decent choice as ruckman, not my choice but hes been good.

Hombsch would be the only one guys outside of Port know a bit about but Clurey has been amazing this year.
I can see AA selectors looking at our points against at the end of the year, thinking "shit we better put a Port defender in there", and chucking Hombsch in by default even though Jonas and Clurey would be immensely more worthy.

Hard to pick outstanding defenders when a good team defence has such a huge influence on their effectiveness.

I think Kruezer is the leading candidate, even ahead of Ryder.

Grundy got him in the first quarter for sure, but Mummy (with a little help from Lobb), turned it around in the second quarter onwards and was a large factor in their win.

I have been really impressed with Ryder all year. Would have him just leading the race:

I know I might sound bias, but I would have it -

1. Ryder
2. Kreuzer
3. Grundy

No he didn't, Sandi beat him, was one of the very few Freo players that won their contest
I take it he did to Ryder what he did to Kreuzer only a few weeks ago. Kreuzer was everywhere and around the ground he outworked Sandiland, but Sandi's tap work won the game for Freo that generated amazing clearances.

The only game Kreuzer has missed was the Port game, which was clearly the worst Carlton has played all year.

Don't agree, my memory of the game was Sandilands going out of his way to block out Ryder from leaping, the umpires let him get away with a lot of it just because of his reputation.

It is a ruck contest, Sandi should just step out of the way and let Ryder have a free run at the ball?

Sandi / Ryder

Disposals 12 / 7
Marks 1 / 1
Hit outs 36 / 23
Inside 50 1 / 0
Cont poss 9 / 7

Please explain how Ryder destroyed Sandi.

Spin the roulette wheel for the All Australian ruck at the moment.

Candidates are Grundy, Kreuzer, Mumford, Ryder, Martin, Sandilands, McEvoy and Jacobs.

I'll try and rate them using a 5,4,3,2,1 method.

Disposals - 5 Martin, 4 Grundy, 3 Jacobs, 2 Kreuzer, 1 McEvoy
Hitouts - 5 Sandilands, 4 Mumford, 3 Jacobs, 2 Martin, 1 Grundy
Marks - 5 Jacobs, 4 Martin, 3 McEvoy, 2 Grundy, 1 Ryder
Clearances - 5 Martin, 4 Grundy, 3 Ryder, 2 Kreuzer, 1 Sandilands
Tackles - 5 Kreuzer, 4 Mumford, 3 Grundy, 2 McEvoy, 1 Jacobs

Totals - 16 Martin, 14 Grundy, 12 Jacobs, 9 Kreuzer, 8 Mumford, 6 Sandilands, 6 McEvoy, 4 Ryder.

Before you rip me apart, I know this doesn't tell the whole story. But it's interesting nonetheless.

Martin would be very close imo.

If we didn't have Archie Smith in rucking alongside Martin last week against the Pies, he'd either be ranked 1st or 2nd for hitouts in the comp. He's also ranked 15th in the competition for clearances ahead of midfielders like Fyfe, Cotchin, Ziebull, Viney, Treloar and Wines. The next best ruckman is Grundy at #36. Also averaging a handy 19 disposals per game.

For mine, it's out of Martin, Grundy and Ryder. All three have been super.

Ryder was massive today.

Is he the best tap in the comp? Just so clean and perfectly weighted.
I'd have NN as a clear number 1, but Ryder's the best playing at the moment. It shows he clearly plays best as a number one ruck and not as a forward, despite the hit to his goal kicking it's made up for by the clean clearances he's generating. He was excellent last night and most of the season, what I find interesting about the ruck battle is its contrasting styles between Ryder, Kruezer, Mumford, Grundy, Martin etc.
