I was at the game today. Whoever said JVR has a bit of Schwarz about it - 100%. Obviously missing the bulk, but really enters contests with intent. Very, very excited to see him in the flesh for the first time and was worth the drive alone. Love that his teammates call him Rooter too. What a nickname.

That being said... very underwhelmed by the rest, bar perhaps Turner and Deakyn Smith, who both did some nice things. Woey very limited ground time so leave him out too.

Tomlinson and Weid the most disappointing. Two blokes you would expect to use their size and experience and stand out at this level, but certainly didn't. Bedford did some good things and just one of those days where he spilt a couple of easy marks and shanked a kick or two. The thing my old man and I thought was that the team seemed over-coached - not playing on instinct at all and chipping the ball around instead of taking the game on. Joel Smith tried to take it a little but didn't have too much luck.

I would have though the main squad would be there to support but apparently flew back at 830am this morning, despite no game next week. Whole MFC coaching staff - bar Goody - were there. No Spencil :(
I've defended him in previous years but jeez how bad was Weid

1v2 on the ladder, a position in a finals bound Melbourne up for grabs (if Brown or Melk gets injured) and he doesn't even fire a shot. His head drops so quickly these days. You can see other players when they make an error the second effort is there to make it right.

When he gets outmarked (which he did often against Wylie Buzza) his head drops and his effort at ground level just dies.

JVR plays with more presence as a 19 year old. Hell, 19 year old Weid probably plays with more presence than current day Weid. He's sadly getting worse, not better.

Yeah he's shot. Had most of the attributes to make it so still wouldn't totally shock me if he made a career for himself with a fresh start at another club. He's worthless to us the way he's playing now though.

If there’s no trade table interest, got to chuck him in the backline and see how that goes. Liam Jones style.

Weid specialises in getting his hands on the ball, closely followed by the ball hitting the ground. Good skillset for a spoiling defender.

I know it was only a once off, but after seeing him in the backline for 30 mins vs Freo early in the year I dont think he has much hope there either. He was just as useless as he is as a forward.

He plays too nice to ever be good anywhere. Real limp dick is Weid unfortunately.

This is appalling even by news.com.au standards, despite sometimes me questioning whether news.com.au even has standards.
I've had two people who knew I was taking my son to the game, who are not footy fans, say "shame about that game haha" and I didn't know what they meant..

Was thinking this too, his mental game is so bad now.

JVR seems to kick a lot of goals from crumbing for a big man. I love this because it means he's got goalsense and forward craft. Having said that, you'd love to see him get hold of some defences with his marking during the finals. If he does that he should be starting in the ones next year.

I’m no Weideman fan but he was kinda thrown there off no training mid game

Don't want to turn this into a Weid thread but let's be honest, he will be delisted as soon as his contract is up.
I wouldn't even play him down back as it deprives our young promising backmen game time they need and there's no point if Weid is not here long term anyway. I think JVR will take his spot and we'd be better off with a rnd 4 draft pick for him if we could get one.

But if he's rubbish up forward and he ends up being a good enough CHB that we can try Petty up forward, why not? Its not like we have anyone developing at Casey in KPD aside from Turner, who is more of a Lever style interceptor anyway. Weid would be competing with Tomlinson, who somehow has two more years on his deal. Signing him as a five year utility/winger was one of Mahoney's rare Ls. He looked good in defence before his knee, but that's not even why we bought him.

Weideman is just not AFL standard. He has the worst hands I've seen at AFL Level - Chris Dawes used to cop a bit about having hands of stone, but he was Wayne Carey next to Weideman. I've never seen an AFL player so poor at marking the ball. And let's be honest, Kurt Fearnley is better below his waist than Weideman.

If Melbourne can get someone else to take on his contract I'd throw in a draft pick to get them to take it. He is a negative asset that has shown no improvement. This is his 7th year on an AFL list - he is not young - he is more than halfway through his potential AFL career and has shown nothing.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t invest a preseason into training Weid up as a defender.

What is there to lose?

If it works out, great, it opens up options like the Petty switching forward one.

If it doesn’t work, no worse off than the team is now.

I also agree Turner is a Lever type who needs some space and reads the ball, rather than a toe-to-toe type defender that we need in case May or Petty get hurt.

Having both Turner and Weid with Tomlinson in the Casey backline is no problem, unless Melbourne invest into an 18 yo key back in the draft this year. Joel Smith is perpetually injured and being tried forward now anyway, and surely Mitch Brown will go after this year.

Because it's like a gambler chasing his loses. Need to acknowledge they made a mistake, try and get rid of him and open up a spot for a player that might contribute to winning the next premiership. Weideman is not AFL Level, he would struggle to be picked up by a VFL side if he was delisted. He would be a great local player, that's about it.

Weid sucks but saying he'd struggle to get picked up by a VFL team is odd, the continuous frustration with him is that he frequently kicks bags of goals at Casey and can't convert that form to the seniors.

Probably worth remembering that Liam Jones was a total lost cause as a forward and Mitch McGovern was going the same way. So you can definitely see some remarkable turnarounds by sending failed forwards back. As long as he's on the list he might as well be trained as a backman from now on.

I don't agree with pushing Petty forward though. Petty is too good in the backline to try and reinvent him.

I think Weidman lacks the athletism to make it in the back line - has the tuning circle of a cruise liner and is very poor below his knees. Can only run in straight lines and struggles to mark the ball. See if there is a sucker that will take him, because he's already getting older and not going to make it.

Liam Jones always had some fire and competitiveness in him even when he sucked as forward, which I think is what any decent backman needs as a minimum and starting point, Weid has none.

Cant see anyone being interested now if they weren't last offseason when they had the chance to sign him unfortunately.
