Agree most parts of Maggie's team; this time I'm starting Davidson on the h/f flank his speed and pressure around contest inside 50 is first class 15+possessions last 2games and his defensive running is a standout

Your terms make a lot of sense but i would swap jonas to a pillar and houston to a guard.
Utility is probably a more aussie term for westhoff too..
The rest is spot on and an interesting way to look at the make up of the current 22.

To help you out with the maggies players you probably havent seen, and also to show whats lacking in the depth department ill add the rest of the squad..

Pillars - noone

Gaurds - broadbent hartlett* McKenzie toumpas garner lienert irra hewitt pittard

Infielders - frampton ladhams hayes atley snelling trengove

Wides amon barry patmore

Couriers thomas drew farrell johnson

Targets - marshall (as he is out at the moment)

Drew can be half a courier half an infielder..
Farrell can very easilly be a wide, playing mostly courier type now in his first few games..
Hewitt is a guard / infielder mixes that up a bit.

Thats the rest of the list and highlights just how much we need to target targets and pillars come draft / trade / free agency time

4 pillars
12 gaurds
11 infielders (4 ruckmen)
5 wides
9 couriers
3 targets
1 hoff

Our club put the players at random on the line-up sheet, doesn't it? The traditional way doesn't make much sense to me.

People keep saying we have four talls in our defence. That's why I've picked four pillars. Jonas plays against couriers, so that why I called him a guard, but I will pay more attention.

On utility, it seems more as someone who can play in multiple positions. That's not what Hoff is. It is not that he is listed one game at the back, another at forward, and another at midfield — as an utility player would. Westhoff moves freely around the field, and that's why I've called him a "Libero."

Means pretty much the same thing..

Currently injured:
1st 22: Hartlett, Broadbent, Marshall
22-30: Drew, AJ, Atley
Depth: Lienert, McKenzie

AFL ‘ready’ players: Amon, Toumpas, Trengove, Barry, Pittard, Snelling, Thomas.

I see some serious depth issues at our club. No back up KPP or ruck. Outside depth is thin with Amon and Barry on rotation. Toumpas, Snelling and Thomas are surely in their final year at the club, whilst the retention of Amon and Pittard beyond this year is equally questionable. Last year’s draftees look promising but I think they will be a slow burn and may take 2-4 years to progress. Grim times for Port.

R.Gray Dixon Thomas

I’d swap Wingard with Boak. Want Wingard starting in the centre square.

Bonner Howard Pittard
Byrne Jones Jonas Clurey

So what the * is our fully fit best 22 these days?

My best effort:

B: T. Jonas, T. Clurey, D. Byrne-Jones
HB: D. Houston, D. Howard, H. Hartlett
C: S. Powell-Pepper, T. Rockliff, J. Polec
HF: T. Boak, J. Westhoff, S. Motlop
F: R. Gray, C. Dixon, T. Marshall
R: P. Ryder, O. Wines, C. Wingard
INT: B. Ebert, J. Watts, R. Bonner, S. Gray

Can’t find room in there for Hombsch, Pittard, Thomas, Broadbent, to a lesser extent McKenzie and Barry who are all AFL quality players. High quality kids like AJ, Atley, Hayes coming through, and a strong draft hand going into the 2018 draft. This is the strongest our list has looked since 2004.

Yeah that jostling for spots in the back six - and how we pick them any given day - is so interesting now. One on one defenders may just be the new ruckmen. We have one great one, one decent one on our list, that's it. None even in development. Howard is an elite interceptor rather than a body on body player and I think we want it to stay that way. Clurey is like a runner trapped in a big body. DBJ is the closest we have to an in and under type for small forwards. The other flankers give us varying degrees of run + long and/or pinpoint kick. Houston is both the youngest and arguably the closest to a "one trick pony" among our flankers: great pin point - and long - kick but not so much of the run or the midfieldability of others. I'd argue that a fully fit Pittard or a fully recovered Broadbent push Clurey out. But it's all arguable, and I don't much feel like arguing this morning ;)

Boak and Ebo are getting enough of it but burning it too much. They fix themselves, as senior players and leaders should, we're going to look a whole lot more dangerous. Huge upside there really.

Looks even better when you add the ruck line of Ryder, Wines and Wingard.

Very presumptuous of you to assume that, maybe I had Toumpas in the middle and Wines playing SANFL :p

Watts sanfl Marshall plays against Carlton plus old rat reckons trengrove deserves game against bluebaggers..then again I'm giving Davidson a chance as well but he isn't even on the list!!!!!

Broadbent should play. They've been aiming for a return vs Norwood.

Thomas/Johnson to replace R.Gray in the likely event he misses. Boak would want to lift or when Atley is fit we can give him a chance at AFL level.
