I think it would be difficult these days though, Australians are too parochial and premiers play to that parochialism to get elected

maybe an ex-premier from SA or Tassie is low-profile enough to do it but good luck getting the bigger states to trust (say) Mark McGowan to be an impartial PM

It's unlikely a premier would ever make it (again) as only bottom feeders enter state politics. The ambitious and slightly more competent sociopaths gravitate to federal politics.
