Opinion The Ruck. We need to talk.

Most overated position in AFL football. Here are some premiership ruckman:
  • Mason Cox
  • Rhys Stanley
  • Trent West
  • Mark Blake
  • Mike Pyke
  • Jordan Roughhead
  • Max Bailey

Xerri and CCJ can limp through the next two years until Goad gets rolling or we pick up someone on the annual merry go round.

Ruck depth/quality is the least of our worries.

Counter point is Toby Nankervis, Max Gawn & Jackson, Blicavs & Stanley, Big O just played in a losing grand final by 4 pts, McEvoy & Hale… Cox is better in the ruck than most people want to believe.

You do need talent there who can contribute to the game.

Lucky we drafted Jacob Edwards a couple of years back, should be primed to take the ruck role now

He was so highly touted ... sorry I've just been handed a note ... he what? when?

Thoughts after two run outs?
He's good enough for now. Not the best tapwork yesterday (perhaps on the mids more than him, they constantly started behind their opponents) and needs to mark more but he's a weapon at ground level. if he improves those things he was lacking in he'll be a great player for us.

Good enough for mine and I think he can and should improve with a consistent block of 40-50 games under his belt. We definitely need another option coming in behind him to develop over the next couple of years though.

Really enjoying watching an aggressive ruckman. Goldy was skilful and soft. Xerri rough around edges but tough. With Goad coming in behind we are well set for future. 2nd ruck we need to be creative. Liked Greenwood last year, think Zurhaar can do it for 5 minutes a qtr, would help get him into game. We have so much depth fwd he wouldn't be missed in that area.

I thought he'd hold his own for the year and just wanted him to stay fit.

But he's done way better than that: He's fairly clearly beaten Marshall & Briggs so far this year, who were both top 5 rated rucks last season.

We need to talk again

Multi year deal on the table v will X progress with the skill set required?

Is this it? Is the best we can expect?

X is competing at a high level. He just needs to dial in his tap work. If he can improve it even 10-20% then that’s all we need for the time being.

Fingers crossed he is just keeping his seat warm until Goad mature physically. When he is ready we’ll have our freakishly athletic ruckman.

Doesn't tell the full story. The quality of the hits and skills are stratospheres apart.

Let alone Gawn and Goldstein ability to play as KPP.

I love how people criticise players for being one dimensional yet allow this bloke a free pass because he lays tackles. His ruck work is puss, he is virtually unsighted in marking contests, he is torched by fitter opponents.

The obvious is he will continue to get better, however.. North should be going hard after 2 OOC contract players from the mutts and one of them is English.
