It'd be nice, but extremely doubtful.... Cats wont want to help us in anyway!!!

GEELONG defender Tom Gillies has asked to be traded to Hawthorn.

Recruited by the Cats in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, the 21-year-old has spent much of the past three seasons in the VFL.

He played only two senior games for Geelong during the 2011 season (for a career total of eight), although he was a solid contributor in both.

Gillies' manager, Tim Hazell, says his client did not actively seek to attract interest from other clubs.

But Gillies has been impressed by the Hawks' pledge to give him more opportunities at the elite level.

"For Tom, this has come from left field," Hazell told AFL.com.au's Trade Week Radio on Thursday morning.

"It's a tough one because he's contracted to Geelong [for another season], and they have the cards and we need them to fall the right way for what we would like to happen.

"I think another club might be the best thing for Tom. Now that could be right that could be wrong.

"Tom's sort in that predicament where if he could get to a certain club he would definitely look at it.

"There's only probably one club that Tom is definitely interested in going to. I think it's pretty obvious that Hawthorn … are after Tom.

"If that deal can be done, then I think it's a win for Hawthorn and a win for Tom."

Given the Hawks are likely to be one of Geelong's main challengers for the 2012 premiership, it appears unlikely that the Cats will let Gillies reach his preferred destination.

Geelong also needs Gillies to be in line to replace Matthew Scarlett if the six-time All Australian sticks to his plan and retires at the end of next season.

"Hawthorn are interested in Tom Gillies, but he's very much required and a contracted player here," Geelong football manager Neil Balme told Trade Week Radio on Wednesday.

"So I'm not quite sure what their strategy is there but I don't reckon he's going anywhere."

Hazell admits a deal is a long way off.

"We haven't had too much contact with [Geelong] over the last 24 hours, but they're definitely playing hard-ball at the minute," Hazell said.

"They don't want to lose him.

"If it doesn't go through, Tom Gillies will be there next year giving it 100 per cent."

This is interesting would love to have another young defender to join the club.I dont know how we would get this done and what would we have to give up?

We won't get this done on our own. If we do make a play for Gillies, then I'd say Lisle is heading out the other door. Someone on facebook (where I saw the rumour posted first) suggested:

Hawks gain: Gillies
Hawks lose: Lisle

Geelong gain: pick
Geelong lose: Gillies

Melbourne gain: Lisle
Melbourne lose: pick

pick would probably be Melbourne's second rounder, which is pick 36. I doubt that in isolation will be enough as well, for us or Geelong.

How on Earth could this ever happen?
  1. Geelong want to keep him and he is contracted which means Hawks will pay overs
  2. Can the hawks even guaruntee him a spot? I like Lonegon but if Lonegon is holding him out of a spot he is not the Messiah.
  3. Gunston has shown more than Gillies and I honestly have no idea if Gunston is going to be any good.
  4. Cats simply will not let the Hawks have him. They would give pretty much any other club Bartell before they gave us anything we want.

I'm not sure if he is what Hawthorn needs anyway.
From watching his games in the VFL as well as the AFL so far, Gillies to me project as a player who is ideally suited to play on the 3rd tall but can pinch hit on the kpf if required. Definitely not someone to take on the monster forwards week in week out. Hawks seem to have plenty of these guys already on the list...

I have the exact same thoughts. However, any tall defender is worth an inquiry from Hawthorn.

Oh, he's exactly what we need.

If you haven't noticed, we are building an arsenal of 3rd tall defenders that will be the envy of the competition.

Seems everyone wants to be traded to the Hawks???

Therefore, I too, would like to be traded to Hawthorn.

Everyone else is so why not throw my hat in the ring.

I am not listed by an AFL club so would come cheap and in saying that wouldn't actually require a trade.

Any chance of that being Tweeted by Trade Week Radio?

it all depends if we can hold down full back against the power forwards.

But then again Clarkson does loves his 3rd tall defenders.
I'm not too keen on this myself, I think I'd rather keep Lisle lol

Every game we play against them we say the same thing, but they been eating us for breakfast for 3 years now...

They've been ahead of us on the ladder all those times, so not unexpected. The surprise was that we got so close so many times.

I think it changes in 2012 now that Ling is gone and nobody will tag Mitchell or Hodge out of it.

Just so. There's a lot of happier midfielders that cracked open a few celebratory tinnies when they heard the Human Clamp retired.

He'll reach us me thinks.

He'll reach us me thinks.

You implying that he has long arms Grizz?

He is listed on GFC website as 192cm & 88kg IIRC. Smaller than Schoey, Lisle & Gilham as well I think. I dare say he would play more body-on-body than Gilham, but his size stats clearly don't suggest that he has part gorilla DNA.

I am still excited though.

I honestly don't see why we are chasing him, he's not a KPD in my eyes simply because he gets pushed around in contests way to easy. He's shorter than Schoey and weighs less as well.

Would prefer us to take a much cheaper option in Boumann who is a KPD.

Did anyone hear on Trade Week Radio that there is some talk
of
Geelong Gillies>>>>>>Hawthorn
Bulldogs Russell >>>> Geelong
Hawthorn Lisle>>>>>> Bulldogs
