Just reflecting on the Carlton game and the role of their top 10 draft picks. Any chance of someone generating a rank order of teams and the number of top 10 draft picks they currently have on their lists. The Lions must be very lowly ranked with perhaps only Polec and Rich in that category. The only other team similar to us might be the Swans. Obviously, the Suns are somewhat blessed at the moment and will benefit in a few years time.

We also have Clark, Leuenberger and Power from memory. Also have Xavier Clarke who wasn't drafted by us, but still was a pick 5. Makes six for us.

GC technically only have six top 10 picks at the moment. They have a fair few that would've went top 10 though.

Love the write-up, only comment (don't really want to sound nit-picking for the sake of nit-picking) would be brackets around Tambling (ADEL), JON (WCE) and Ray (STK). Interesting comparison though (especially seeing who's touted as GWS/other targets). We'd drop to next to no top 10 picks is the various rumours are true...

This proves what a lot of us already thought about Roos and Craig.

Interesting thread guys. Besides the comment from dlanod just these minor points as well, Luke Ball was pick 2 and Hodge pick 1, Ottens should have a bracket as he came from Richmond.

Adelaide were a nearly team for a while, so what this shows is that if you don't get up and win a flag when you are on the way up, it will be a long time before you get another crack when the guns retire.

...continuing on with my view that "top 10" draft picks are a pivotal factor in success, this weeks situation is as follows. Clearly the Tigers are well placed and in a much better position than we are at the moment::o

Richmond:
1. Brett Delidio
2. Trent Crotchin
3. Dustin Martin
6. Reece Conca
8. Tyrone Vickery

Lions:
4. Matthew Luenberger
5. Luke Power
7. Daniel Rich
9. Mitch Clark

Adelaide were a nearly team for a while, so what this shows is that if you don't get up and win a flag when you are on the way up, it will be a long time before you get another crack when the guns retire.

Craig and Roos both had a fairly strong list coming through from the 90s. While Swans never won a flag in the 90s they had a good list, Crows won 2 flags in the late 90s and a good chunk of the quality players were still there.

Their biggest issue was the period where they rose up the ladder the talent outside the top 10 was somewhere between woeful and hit or miss and both sides god poor return from their first round picks, traded some good picks which could have got some good players and didn't make great list management decisions.

In most years the really top end talent is really within the first 3 picks, after that you can often throw a blanket over a large number of picks before it thins out to be hit or miss.

What hurts these clubs is in recent years picks from 4 to 30ish could go either way, there isn't the same incentive finishing low as there was when the talent was real lean so unless you cop the spoon or near to it and get priority picks on top, you might be no better off than someone that played finals.

For that period between 2002 and 2006ish it really hurt being up high.
