Russell
Well Port didn’t want to offer a 2nd round pick, so no-deal. So the outcome now is that Russell will go into the PSD or re-sign with the Blues. I’m happy with that outcome. Far rather keep a decent chance of retaining his services rather than trade for a Port middle-of-the-road player or a low draft pick. With fellow South Australian, Bryce Gibbs arriving soon, plus a few more chats from Sticks and others, he may well decide to stay, rather than be picked up in the PSD by Essendon or North.

Thornton
A difficult situation, but I agree with Denis’s strong consistent stand on this matter. He is a required player. Period. We have a few weeks now, to let things cool off a bit, and see if we can come to an agreement.

Pagan is a tool, we are the only club that takes a hard stance on requried players that want to leave....... best result now gain Thornton in the pre season draft adn let him play reserves all year, while lose Russel to Port. IF we werent so stubborn at least we may have got a few second round picks for the two players and be able to get someone else in the preseason draft. Didnt go after Polak, or any Ruckman........

WE ARE THE ONLY TEAM WHO CAN GET THE FIRST PICK IN THE PRESEASON DRAFT AND USE IT TO OUR DISADVANTAGE..... EVEN ESSENDON CAN GET A COUPLE OF PICKS FOR SOLOMON........

GOOD TIMES AHEAD FOR THE BLUES, EVERYONE HATES PAGAN, WE LOSE PLAYERS QUICKER THAN WE DRAFT THEM, AND IM NOT QUITE SURE WE CAN EVEN DRAFT PROPERLY!!!!!!

What positive outcome we got nothing, Thornton and Russell don't want to play at Carlton.

Thornton will re-sign

Russel will re-sign.

Thornton thought he could hold our club to ransom.

And if the dont? From what ive heard not many at the club like Pagan so who is going to convince them to re-sign? And why didnt we go for Polak harded or ANY ruckman??? Say both players do re-sign who will be in the preseason draft!!!

Actually, best result is that they both give up, re-sign and everyone puts the last fortnight behind them.

Then we pick up the best guy in the PSD as planned.

I don't understand your logic, now Thornton has the facility to hold Carlton to ransom through the PSD. Carlton is now in a worse position than they were 45 minutes ago.

Carlton has just given Thornton an open cheque, instead of getting pick 24 and 33.

The long tem affect may be good for the club, but surely Carlton only needed to send one of Russell or Thornton into the PSD in order to "send a message"

If #24 and #33 were on the table for Thornton, you should have taken it.

Better than the nothing you might end up with.

Exactly right, all those Carlton supporters saying it was a good thing that we took this hard stance, wait for the draft when Thornton walks and goes to Hawthorn for nothing, will it still be good then!!!

Agree completely, we needed to have one of them re-signed or traded by 2pm, otherwise we run the very real risk of losing one of them for nothing.

If we do mention to Thornton that we are going to re-draft him, do you really think he would want to make his position at the club any worse by forcing it to use its number one pick in the PSD on him? Even Thornton knows when the clips are stacked against him.

A very good point. If Thornton knows we are going to use the PSD # 1 on him, he would be stupid not to re-sign.

Agree that Russell should have been traded- not for any reason other that I dont rate him that highly and feel that we had a chance to get some value for him that in a few years may not be there, because he is SOFT.

We made our stand, i agree with the principals of the stand and if they both go into the PSD who really gives a F**K??

Lets move on and look forward to the draft...

Re: Trade Week Aftermath – a Positive Outcome.

To look at it from an outsiders view who arent involved in any way with the club.

Seems alot of the media are shaking their heads at us in disbelief at what we've done this week.

its the same people who were saying we'll get pick 6 for thornton who are saying they will resign...dream on guys...we are screwed..

No one ever thought we would get pick 6, that is why we played hard ball.

We had 2 real options

a. Take a substandard deal for Thornton.
Pro - We have something to show for it.
Con - Not an even return and sends a bad message.

b. Play hardball with Thornton and hope he re-signs
Pro - Sends a strong message to club and others we won't be screwed with and a decent chance he will re-sign.
Con - Could blow up and we are left with little.

Option b is riskier but has greater rewards. Option A is the safer one, but is substandard.

Personally I take option b.

Most footy supporters would understand it was a dire situation and you only faced a choice of which way you were screwed. At least this way you stand a slight chance of re-signing the players.
