Underwhelming/Underachieving players

A little like Scharenberg.

How has Laverde looked when he has strung a few games together? Scharenberg showed enough last year that we could tell he's an elite footballing talent. Would be a star if his knees would let him.

Fingers crossed they both get a fair run at it at some stage. There are few more frustrating things in footy than players with talent who have careers cruelled by inuries.

Sharanberg has definitely achieved more than Laverde in AFL. Laverde has really only shown glimpses of talent at AFL level.

Jack Darling
Built like Tarzan, plays like Jane and often goes missing in big games...

The comparative lack of heat that Josh Kennedy cops for his performance in that GF is puzzling, given that Kennedy was the Coleman Medallist in his absolute prime (28 years old) at the time.

Kennedy was double teamed. Was also excellent in the QF and PF. Anyway we had maybe 1 or 2 winners on the day, much better team structure last year.

Makes zero sense, he's very much undersized for a tall forward player. If he was Buddy's size he'd be in the conversation for best tall in the league.

He was last year for about 10 games. Against the much hyped Tigers he was on another level. 20 touches, 15 marks (6 contested), 6 goals 2... shame he got injured, could've put together 60-70 goal season which came out of nowhere.

Still don't think that afford Kennedy a complete pass, which he essentially has been given compared to the roasting Darling got and still sometimes gets.

It came out of being the primary target for once, with Kennedy missing for half the year.

Darling got roasted because of the dropped mark. Plus he had an ordinary finals series. Given Kennedy had two opponents that have Darling freedom he didn't capitalise on.

Kennedy played rounds 4-10 last year which was the peak of Darling's purple patch.

Zac Smith early on looked like he'd be one of the best rucks in the league by now, but is currently languishing away in the VFL.

That's a fair call. Looked to have all the traits and made a very nice impression early on as a ruckman. I think he'll be around on lists (if not Geelong) ala. Dawson Simpson, Jon Ceglar or Dan Currie a fair more years yet as he's a good a backup option as there is going. But highly unlikely to become the Dean Cox-like player he appeared as though as he could have been.

I had Smith among the top 4-5 rucks in the league in 2017, which was clearly his best individual season too. Not really sure what's happened since.

Jake Stringer - THE PACKAGE owns this thread, plenty of talent, plays in bursts

Christian Petracca - occasionally shows why he was number 2 pick, but mostly disappoints

Steven Motlop - All Australian squad 2013 - hasn't really kicked on to greater heights

Jesse Hogan - was spoken of as the second coming of Wayne Carey, it's probably time he delivered

Kieren Jack - he was a GUN: best and fairest 2010, All Australian 2013 - been average in the years since then

Todd Goldstein - best ruckman in the comp in 2015 - okay, not great over the last 3 years

Callum Mills - Rising Star 2016 - looks to me like a vanilla half back

Jack Martin - was talked up by Gold Coast Suns as a potential superstar, the best young gun on their list - he's okay, not that great

You could throw most of GC's 2010 draft and 17 year old concessions in this thread.

Swallow - Co-captain, but he hasn't delivered enough for a #1 pick.
Bennell - Showed glimpses of brilliance at the Suns but can't get on the park now.
Day - #3 pick and has shown next to nothing at AFL level.
Caddy - Has done very well at Richmond but took a while to get going. Borderline pass.
Prestia - Has his moments but has been disappointing overall for a top 10 pick.
Gorringe - Complete bust
Lynch - The best performing player that they picked. He gets a definite pass.
Tape - Somehow lasted 6 years on their list. Bust.
Matera - Looked like he would be a star in his first year, had traits of his uncle Phil, but he's only ever lived on potential.
Dixon - Not a spud but not the star forward many predicted him to be.

Jonathan O'Rourke. Went second in the draft to GWS and was traded a couple of years later to Hawthorn for a late first rounder. Was compared to Pendlebury before the draft and seemed to have it all. Only played 12 games for the Hawks before he was delisted last year.

Matt Suckling.

He can kick it a long way but doesn't do a great deal. Has coasted off the odd 70m kick every few games for a decade. Regularly tries to be too clever kicking across his body and shanks it.
You haven't watched over the last 2 years have you?

Has gone from a fringe player to one of our best and most consistent players. Terrible nomination for this thread.

I’d sure be love to get what he’s getting at the bulldogs to just take the kick ins

Sam Day is average at best. If he played for any other AFL club there would been a lot more scrutiny surrounding his performance...he might have even been delisted by now. The relative anonymity of playing in the Gold Coast has papered over a lot of cracks.

Who are some players that maybe a year or two into their careers, you thought would be absolute stars but just never reached those heights?

One for me is Daniel Rich. I thought he was going to be an absolute gun. He turned out to be ok, a C+ to B- type of player.

Hurley is another decent player, but I thought he was going to be much better. I still have a visual of him early in his career as a forward...a game maybe against Hawthorn. Had the ball from just outside 50, off a few steps on his left foot just put it straight through the middle. I thought he was going to be one of the elite players of the competition.
He has turned out to be a solid defender, but thought he would have been so much more.

Without reading through the thread - I’m sure it’s been pointed out - but Hurley is a little better than a solid defender.

As for being one of the elite players in the competition... we’ll he’s certainly one of the elite key defenders in the league. 2x All Aust, does a massive job on a top forward every week and offers plenty going the other way.

Yes he didn’t become an elite forward, but he’s certainly an elite defender.
