What is the most unbreakable record in the AFL?

Fitzroy kicked 10.5 in that match in the last quarter, which doesn't rank in the top 15, the record is 17.4

Yeah I see that with the quarter by quarter scores. Very impressive second half 22.8 has to be one of the highest second half scores? What's the quarter by quarter scores from that South Melbourne V St.Kilda match from 1919?

I agree. Maybe not in the next ten years, however scores that big are kicked every single week in country football and lower divisions. From a purely theoretical standpoint a goal every 2 mins playing time to reach 40goals is very possible.

All it takes is the gulf between top and lower teams to get larger, which has certainly occurred in the last few years. Or for there to be some sort of on-field protest such as Melbourne 2011.

Exactly right.

What was the protest over? The same team had won four of its previous seven matches.

I not sure if this is unbreakable, but it's only happened once in history, so it's an extremely rare event. Three players from the same team kicking 60+ goals in the same season.

It was acheived by North Melbourne in 1993.
John Longmire. 75.29 (20 games)
Adrian McAdam. 68.43 (17 games)
Wayne Carey. 64.44 (19 games)

Also, 1993 was the only season since 1969 that did not consist of 22 regular season games, because of the byes, each team only played 20 games before the finals. If they had of played 22 regular season games, there was possibility of a fourth NM player getting over 50 and perhaps getting close to 60, as Mark Roberts finished the season on 47 goals.

Good stat. :thumbsu:

The only immediate ones that come to mind that go close (I'm sure there are others) are Richmond in 1980 with Roach, Bartlett and Cloke (I think Cloke was just under 50 goals), and Geelong in 1989 with Ablett, Exell and Brownless (Brownless had 46 from memory). I've got no doubt there were others in that ball park though. Hawthorn when Dunstall was kicking tons must have had good contributions from others as well.

There have been a number of instances where teams have got close and had three players kick over 50. I know of five instances since the game expanded to 22 rounds in 1970.

1972. Richmond. McLean 55, Balme 55 & Hart 51.
1977. Hawthorn. Hudson 110, Matthews 91 & Hendrie 52.
1984. Hawthorn. Matthews 77, Judge 63 & Brereton 50.
1994. Melbourne. Lyon 79, Schwarz 60 & Jakovich 51.
2000. Brisbane. Lynch 68, Bradshaw 56 & Power 52.

The last one I find a little surprising because Essendon dominated the season and were such a free scoring team, but only had 2 players reach 50 goals.

I brought up Mark Roberts in my previous post because no team has had 4 players score over 50 goals in a season, that was the closest any team has got, and it was done with two less rounds played.

North is also the only team to have 5 x 40+, in 1983.

Some fascinating statistics right there. Amazing to think of those 5 teams, only two of them even made the Grand Final - with obviously pretty good firepower at their disposal - and none of them ended up as premiers. Underscores the importance of defence I guess both then and now.

For those interested, 50+ by four players in the same team has happened three times in WAFL history (Claremont in 1938, Perth in 1977 and Claremont in 1981).

To think, that if Jim Krakouer kicked one more goal in 1981, Claremont would have had 5 players crack the 50-goal mark (Warren Ralph 127, Steve Malaxos 82, Brett Farmer 67, Phil Krakouer 50, Jim Krakouer 49).

60+ by three teammates has happened on 5 occasions:

Perth 1977 (Robert Wiley 75, Peter Bosustow 70, Murray Couper 68)
Perth 1978 (Couper 82, Wiley 72, Bosustow 61)
Claremont 1981 (Ralph 127, Malaxos 82, B. Farmer 67)
South Fremantle 1981 (Bruce Monteath 78, Brad Hardie 75, Noel Carter 66)
Subiaco 1986 (Stephen Sells 75, Todd Breman 64, Warren Dean 63)

QT: Sth Melb 2.5 (17) to St Kilda 0.0 (0)
HT: Sth Melb 6.7 (43) to St Kilda 2.2 (14)
3/QT: Sth Melb 12.11 (83) to St Kilda 2.6 (18)
FT: Sth Melb 29.15 (189) to St Kilda 2.6 (18)

23.8 to South in the 2nd half.

North is also the only team to have 5 x 40+, in 1983.

I knew North did it (Phil & Jim Krakouer 44, Hodgeman & McCann 41, Schimmelbusch 40), but I didn't know we were the only ones.

There have been a number of instances where teams have got close and had three players kick over 50

Coll 1938

Todd - 120, Fothergill - 65, Pannam - 54.

All in an 18 game season. Pannam only played 15 games that year.

1980

Geelong finished on top of the ladder after the H&A season with 2362 'points for'
Fitzroy finished last with 2398 'points for'

Now these are the sorts of stats I like

Michael Tuck with the most unbreakable records of anyone
Games - 426 (would take Fletcher 3 more seasons and I can't see that happening)
Most Finals - 39
Most Grand Finals as a player - 11
Most Premierships as a player - 7

Also unbreakable both the oldest and youngest players. Considering the draft age is above the youngest ever player it's not possible and playing at 43 won't happen.

Fred Fanning's 18 goals in a match

Most GF as a coach Jock McHale 20.

4 consecutive Premierships. It will take an effort to equal it and that is possible but to break it, no.

The only way for records involving premierships can be broken is if the AFL abandon the salary cap.

Long way to go, but Bryce Gibbs is on track if he plays for long enough and avoids serious injury.

He'll still be 24 (just) when the 2014 season kicks off.

155 games in 7 seasons @ 22 games per season
+
another 12 seasons @ 22 games per season = 419

He'd be 35 at the end of 2025. One more year, or a good run with finals...

People said Bartlett's record was unlikely to be broken at the time, with only Tim Watson given a remote chance due to his early start. Tuck snuck up on everyone. Who knows, maybe Harvey can eke out another three years...

When Richmond won the Flag in 73, the top goalkicker in the H&A was Ricky McLean with 32 - the equal lowest 'Club leading Goalkicker' in the comp with Melbourne (who finished 10th). At the conclusion of finals, Richmond had 8 players who had kicked between 28 and 34 goals. No Richmond player was in the top 20 goalkickers for the season (even including finals) - but there were 8 in positions 21-41. Overall, including finals, Richmond were the highest scoring team in the comp.
'Good spread of Goalkickers' - as the coaches would say.
