What is the most unbreakable record in the AFL?

When Richmond won the Flag in 73, the top goalkicker in the H&A was Ricky McLean with 32 - the equal lowest 'Club leading Goalkicker' in the comp with Melbourne (who finished 10th). At the conclusion of finals, Richmond had 8 players who had kicked between 28 and 34 goals. No Richmond player was in the top 20 goalkickers for the season (even including finals) - but there were 8 in positions 21-41. Overall, including finals, Richmond were the highest scoring team in the comp.
'Good spread of Goalkickers' - as the coaches would say.

Interesting. And way before that term became used too.

Long way to go, but Bryce Gibbs is on track if he plays for long enough and avoids serious injury.

He'll still be 24 (just) when the 2014 season kicks off.

155 games in 7 seasons @ 22 games per season
+
another 12 seasons @ 22 games per season = 419

He'd be 35 at the end of 2025. One more year, or a good run with finals...

People said Bartlett's record was unlikely to be broken at the time, with only Tim Watson given a remote chance due to his early start. Tuck snuck up on everyone. Who knows, maybe Harvey can eke out another three years...
Maybe, but only needs to start missing a few games here and there and suddenly it will require another season on top of that. It would also require him to be playing quality football for another 13 years and this is the biggest problem that players have encountered.

One wrong landing and bang knee reco and with that also kiss goodbye to playing at 37.

Who holds the record for most brothers playing together at the same club in the era after the draft was established?

I know North have had Brent and Shane Harvey, Brady and Jade Rawlings, and also Cameron and Luke Delaney. Anyone else know of any?

Anthony and Michael Stevens and Shannon and Daniel Motlop are two other North pairings I can think of.

There was a feature in the 1986 Grand Final Record which listed the players likely to break KB's record, and they had pics of three players - Watson, Russell Greene and Gary Pert.

They mentioned Tuck, but said he was unlikely to break the record as even he didn't have visions of leading the Hawks into the 1990s :)

Melbourne won 5 premierships in 6 seasons at one point. Played in all six of the GF's in that period too.

Pretty sure that will hold up.

Stynes' consecutive games record would be very tough to beat. Same with Tuck's all time games record.

Ron Barrassi's ten flags as player/coach would be nigh on invincible as well.

Father-son selections would win that contest. The three Clokes lined up in the same team on at least one occasion and there's a fair chance that Heath and Rhyce Shaw also played at the same time.

Beginning the match after Ian Stewart's resignation as coach in 1978, a different Carlton player kicked 4 or more goals in 9 successive games - Walls, McConville, Sheldon, Ashman, Buckley, Galt/Maclure, Keogh, Brown, Galt/Maclure.
In 1993 a North Melbourne player kicked 4 or more in all but one game (20 of 21), including 12 consecutive games where somebody kicked 5+.

Some records from this season:

Longmire's 9 goals against the Swans but not the team's leading goalkicker (McAdam 10) is IIRC an equal record with a Hawthorn player.

McAdam's 23 in his first three games is a record.

Pretty sure Alan Jakovich has the best goals per game average for any first season? might be wrong on that one though.

I can't ever see Tucks record being broken. I think the biggest thing on his side was the number of finals he played. That's not really possible any longer with equalisation etc, the player would have to move clubs pretty regularly.

Fletch is hailed for his durability but even he's missed over 100 games.

Maybe if they replace the last remaining bits of Gumby with titanium, he could play for 40 years and break it.

A couple from yesteryear...

- Stan Judkins was dropped from the Richmond side after 12 rounds in 1930, and wasn't reinstated until the finals. He won the Brownlow.

- Dave Lynch played only the final six games of 1926. He kicked 31 goals, which was enough to win Richmond's leading goalkicker award for that season.

Lynch presents one of football's most beguiling mysteries. Despite kicking over 400 goals in the VFL reserves, he played just 20 senior games spread over the years 1922-29, kicking 77 goals. Only eight players in history have scored more goals from their first 20 matches.

Only player to play 300 games, win a brownlow, win a norm smith, multiple all Australian, and 3 premierships.

Simon Black is the only player to ever achieve this, and I think it will be a very long time before someone else does. Unless Gazza manages to win another premiership, but I doubt it.

Jimmy Bartel's on 249 games, I wouldn't count him out just yet.

Judd's not without a chance either; only needs 41 games. With his recent history though, he'd be no certainty to play 41 in two years.

As others have said, thats not even close to an unbeatable record. Bartel is already well on his way, and Gold Coast could easily win a flag in the next three/four years for Ablett to slot in as well. Heck, if Steve Johnson can manage to play a full season for a change, he could almost be up there as well.

Black's record is impressive but as other's have said not unbeatable.

To highlight the difficulty:
* Ablett needs not just another premiership but to win Norm Smith. With 2015 the earliest likely premiership year for Suns a 31yr old Ablett no certainty for Norm Smith ahead of O'Meara & others
* Judd - doubtful on games and needing 2 more premierships, (I might be biased but think Swan has a better chance than Judd, although will likely miss on games if nothing else)
* Goodes - qualified on games, has 2 brownlows, 4AA but no NS - next year his only real chance if injuries this year are a guide when already nearly 34 & needs premiership too.
* Bartel - probably the best chance of current 200+ gamers and has advantage of meeting all criteria except games (the easiest to get when you are older)
* Selwood - just missed on brownlow so far, doesn't have NS and with his brand of footy may struggle for the games
* Pendlebury - still needs the games, 2 more premierships and Brownlow
Can't see anyone else with over 100 games much chance

Statistic doesn't really cover all AFL/VFL unless you exclude all australian selections (not been around that long) and even Norm Smith only around since 1979?
eg would Dick Reynolds (3 brownlows, 4 premierships, 320 games have gotten multiple AA (YES), NS ?

Record for playing and coaching most games (at same time) would stand the test as in era of professional football I can't see a player also coaching.

May have had something to do with a Royce Hart injury?

Also I think for first 50 games as well.

Most unbreakable record will be 4 premierships in a row, ain't no one getting 5 in a row.

Not anymore I agree.

Though its fair to say the Demons 5 in 6 years with one runner up is an even a bigger achievement

Also, checked out the Jakovich thing.

Kicked his 100th career goal in just his 21st game. He kicked his 50th in just 9 games of AFL.

If a player did anything close to that now, could you imagine the meltdown on this forum?

NOTE: Jesse Hogan to do it in 2014.

I assume Tucks 15 years between first and last premiership will stand.
unless Fletcher gets another one soon.

Boomer won one in 1999, so if he got one before he retires he would break it.

Is a chance to break Tuck's games records as well, especially with the new sub rule

True, altough it would have to be 2015 to break Tucks record for time between first and last premiership.

But as you say, no end to Boomer's career in sight.
