What is the most unbreakable record in the AFL?

Turns out there was one, Tony Shaw - 313 games. So, will there ever be a shorter player to play 350 games? The competition's midfielders seem to get taller each year, small forwards who can't go through the middle don't often crack 300, it's a possibility.

Recent research suggests that average human height is on the decline again. So never say never.

Nice try, but No.

The Premiers are decided at the end of the season, hence Fitzroy.

The wooden spoon is decided at the end of the H&A rounds, hence Fitzroy also.

The wooden spoon is decided at the end of the season, when the participating teams finish their season.

Actually there are a lot of bad trades in hindsight. I believe that will be more likely then another team being refused the right to participate in the finals series. As this thread is about records to be broken, hence my example. In our history, Essendon has the record for the first club to be stricken from finals. It is not me having a go so please Essendonia stay on topic else your post may be deleted and a infraction issued.

I was on topic. There is literally no point mentioning a record that is a 'first club to X' or 'first player to Y'. Perhaps we're at a crossroads because you misphrased your post initially.

We aren't, coaching doesn't count. Even if his games record is eclipsed, Tuck has the all time GF record for sure

Exactly. You could coach until your mid 60s if you wanted to; your playing career is over by your mid-late 30s (and that's if you're very, very, very lucky). It's hard to get a coaching job, but once you do, it's not like you'll miss a grand final through lack of form, injury, or suspension.

Tuck's records and Lockett's records are impressive, but hardly unbreakable.

Sure, the style of play in today's game doesn't lend itself to longevity (aside from a few players), or heaps of goals, but who knows where the game will head in ten years' time?

Never say never.

Finishing bottom of the league and still winning the flag... now that will NEVER happen again.

Everything else could conceivably be broken. Fitzroy's record couldn't happen again.

Pretty much everything about Tuck - games, GFs, flags

Can't see anyone playing that many games now, with minimum draft age etc. Go Fletch Go!

I wonder whether the sub rule will offset the fact that you don't have 15-16 year olds debuting in the league these days. Interestingly enough, Tuck was about a month shy of his 19th birthday when he played his first senior game for Hawthorn, which is older than a lot of recruits these days. KB (the other member of the 400 club) had also turned 18 by the time he played his first senior game.

Anyway, getting back to the sub rule. Until the last two years, Adam Goodes looked like he could absolutely cruise to 400 games, especially since he would be the perfect player to play as a designated sub into his late 30s. Could Brent Harvey play another three years, if 30 of the 65 games he needs to play are as a sub? I wouldn't rule it out, especially when you consider that North will be looking to compete for the flag over those three seasons (i.e. not much chance that he'll be forced out by a youth policy).

I don't think the highlighted will have as much bearing on the games record as you suspect. iirc, Tucky played 90 odd games in the reserves, that's close enough to another 3 to 4 seasons worth of games.

There'll be another player with a lean, sinewy build who is very durable that will pop up. The game is so much harder and faster now but Tuck played a few years of his senior career when they had the old 19th and 20th men who were basically only changed because of injury or very late in games. Even when the interchange first came in clubs were reluctant to use it.

Clubs are much better at player management now.

9656 disposals, held by Robert Harvey (383 games), is almost 1000 more than 2nd place, which is Craig Bradley.

Ablett and Swan are the most likely current players, but they have some work to do.

Swan: 5896 (219 games)
Ablett: 6225 (253 games)

Kicks.

Kevin Bartlett played 403 games averaging 21 disposals and refusing to handball. The stat totals haven't been completed yet, but assuming the averages are somewhat correct, he kicked the ball over 7000 times. That would be about 1500 times more than the possession record holder in Robert Harvey.

Both started their careers too slow. Get on Jaeger O'Meara for this one.

lol man, you have no idea how poor teams can get. I'm half-surprised Mark Neeld didn't get the record.
Considering Melbourne have been on the receiving end of 37 goals two times in their history i reckon i have a fair idea. No one has got 40 goals yet in 116 years so i'll stick my neck out and say it won't happen. Poor old Mark Neeld gets the chop mid way through the season and the improvement was immeasurable:rolleyes:
If i was Paul Roos i would be fast tracking that succession plan post haste! Pick 2 goes out the window unless this new Tyson delivers a mid field KO!

Melbourne and Hawthorn, seven grand finals in a row each (1954-60 and 1983-89).

Highly doubt anyone will equal that.

Interestingly enough...It was the Hawks who ended Melbourne's reign in 61.....And Melbourne who knocked the Hawks out in 1990!

Well, sort of...Melbourne lost to Footscray in the '61 preliminary final, but they had lost to Hawthorn the week before, yes.

My old man was at that 1990 final (he's a Tigers man but hey, he was pretty starved of finals action at the time). Said that Melbourne's third quarter was superlative and that the Hawks shot themselves in the foot in the last quarter with some terrible misses.
