Who Plays in The Ashes

If I or a friend were attacked with a broken bottle; I dare say I'd react the same way

I think a few of us would, but none of us are on a huge contract where keeping your nose clean in public is a requirement.

I don't expect anything out the ACB either. They picked a bloke on suspension to fly over to Bangladesh.

If they're desperate they can play Bairstow as a batsman and give Foakes the gloves.
Foakes is probably a better keeper from what I've seen honestly.

But in all seriousness, they're a team that can actually use 6 genuine bowling options because 2 of their best 7 bats are good bowlers as well. Why not take advantage of that instead of playing Dawid ******* Malan?

Agreed. Bairstow-Stokes-Ali is a good 4-7 and it allows them to have 6 bowling options
I think before this year playing Bairstow as a specialist bat with Foakes with the gloves was a goer, but I think Bairstow's improved enough with the gloves that it'll only be worthwhile if Foakes was on par with Ballance/Malan/Vince with the bat.

Which tbf he might be.

Thing with England also is that the next generation is really promising, just need a bit more experience (Livingstone, Lawrence, probably Clarke) or out of form (Hameed).

Probably because 6 bowling options is a bit of a waste, they tried it against South Africa and it made Dawson seem rather useless. Still would be worthwhile if you had one defensive spinner and one attacking one. Could've worked with Moeen/Rashid.

Dawson is useless so that probably contributed to it.

If Foakes averaged 25 with the bat he'd still be a much better option. Clean glovework it's worth plenty of runs anyway.

For Australia well

1. Warner
2. Renshaw
3. Khawaja
4. Smith*
5. Handscomb
6.
7.
8. Pattinson
9. Starc
10. Hazlewood
11. Lyon

Is how I'd go. One batting spot and the keeper spot entirely dependent on the three shield games.
Cummins will get games as well.

We suspended Warner for two Ashes test matches in 2013.

Yeah, 4 years ago. The O'Keefe selection was a couple of weeks ago.

Still, I expect Stokes to play even though he shouldn't. I'll just be intrigued as to how they spin it, and like an English spinner, I don't expect it to be much good.

Happy with that, but I'm sure it might be Cummins over Pattinson.

I'd pick Carey with the gloves. Australian cricket seems to come to these moments where they need to select a young gloveman - this is that time. Then make the #7 position a crowd competition - buy a slab of VB, go into the running to bat 7 for Australia. Couldn't do much worse with the options around the place.

Unless someone really puts their name in lights in the games prior to the Tests I would expect Maxwell to be picked at six for the first one, I think he's probably done enough abroad to earn the incumbency. The third quick, and the keeper are where I see the real competition.

With due respect O'Keefe' saying some dumb s**t when drunk is completely different to getting arrested on suspicion of ABH.

I think any keeper in the country is probably a good chance since both Wade and Nevill hardly bring about any confidence. Bad time for Whiteman to get injured and as it is I'm also on the Carey bandwagon.

Cummins/Pattinson is almost a who is a fit at the time selection but I do wonder if the fact that Pattinson has genuine ability with the bat will give him the edge.

Yeah Maxwell is in the box seat but I'm thinking that if anyone lets say Travis Head for instance scored a few centuries to start the season that Maxwell would be the batsman to get dropped.
