Will Nick Davis..

He played one excellent quarter that got the swans over the line against the cats and into the grannie. Then he was talked up as being AA and elite and bla bla bla... He played ONE EXCELLENT QUARTER and kicked a freak goal where he could have just as easily kicked himself in the face.

Lest we forget he was dropped for being fat, lazy, not team oriented etc etc. Overrated

He has played a lot more than one good quarter for us.

By the way, you obviously don't remember that game. He was our best player all night, and then played one of the best individual quarters you could ever wish to see.

Not an elite player, but that's part of the problem - people expect him to be. As a 3rd or 4th forward (which is the role he has played) his stats stack up pretty well.

You are right he is not an elite player. You are wrong in that no one now expects him to be. The issues is that he SHOULD be. Trying to read the meaning of your comment I’d say I disagree. He has all the attributes to be elite except a brain and a ticker. I would equate him to Didak in terms of a skill set except that he is probably better overhead. He should be a couple years ahead of Didak in development. When he was at Collingwood I rated him as talented as anyone on the list except Buckley and you could argue Buckley wasn’t as much talented as driven and dedicated. Put Davis’ talent into Buckley or Kirk and you’d have as good a player as ever played the game.

Aint that the truth.

I said people expect him to be an elite player. To become an elite player in our side, he needs to be given a different role. He doesn't have the running ability of O'Keefe (may well be his own fault, I don't know), so to get the most out of his sublime skills, he needs to be played where the action is. He has been playing across half-back in the twos, so maybe the club are looking to do just that.

There's no doubt he could be a better player, but you could say that about a lot of players in the competition. None of the others cop the bad press that Davo does. Personally, I didn't think his form was poor enough to warrant being dropped. But if this spell in the reserves make him a better player, then I'll happily eat my words.

MarkT is right. Davis is treated hard by Sydney because he's wasting his talents. In Pies terms, right now he's at the crossroads of becoming Didak or Tarrant. I'd love to see him lift. But I don't think he'll play anywhere else if the Swans decide to get rid of him.

One of the biggest waste of talents I have seen. For a bloke with his skills to be a bit player is a waste.

He is living proof that AFL footy is 90% mental.

...or put Davis' talent into Kirk and you would get Buckley

The sort of player that would shit Barassi to tears, loads of talent but coasts by on it. Part of what I love about a player like Simon Black is that he has a work ethic to match his talent and the result is every medal in the game. Whether Davis was ever going to be in that bracket is a becoming more of a moot point as every season passes.

The funny thing is.... I just don't particularly care about Davis any more. If he stays in the reserves then so be it, if he makes the most of his talent then that's a bonus but it no longer concerns me in the least. I think in a way I have given up on him and conceded that he'll never be anything more than a handy player.

treated pretty unfairly by the club on a few occasions now. Dropped when others would not be dropped

I think it's been more a matter of 'effort' rather than 'output'. If Roos asks Davis to do certain things and he doesn't do them then he deserves to be dropped. It's not as easy to drop a player who is honestly trying their best to follow the instructions given by the coach but is just unable to play good footy.

True, but it tends to happen when people consider you an underperformer. "Maybe a slap around the head is what you need to get going"- in Davis' case, it didn't. I'm with Malceskifan- if he finally comes good it's a bonus, but won't be expecting him to fill a vital role. More interested in getting the newwies up and running, better for them if they are surrounded by players with a great attitude. Kirky would set a pretty good standard.

Nick Davis is a fringe player at Sydney. Not that being a fringe player means he's going to be delisted/traded. It just means he will be in and out of the side over the year, like so many other players, and his next contract will reflect this.

I cant see Davis leaving Sydney. Its the swans or nothing.

Anyway, he's been near BOG in the 2's the last couple of weeks, so could be a chance for a senior game this week.

Christ, playing in the Canberra league you would bloody well think so

He played his first year at Collingwood as a midfielder. He can do and do it well. He isn’t a Rocca that can’t develop the fitness he is just a bloke that ahs done it on the bit forever and maybe it is too late to change now. Everything in his life ahs been done on the bit. Look at his personal relationships. The two girls at the airport. The lack of fortitude shown in his exit from Collingwood. The bloke lacks ticker and brains. I still think he can be a good footballer. I don’t think there is any chance in hell he can be an elite player more than spasmodically though.

he just seems to be dropped a lot more easily than others like jude, lrt, bevan etc. Seems silly when so much of his game relies on confidence and arrogance

Great captains choose themselves, as the adage goes, and Nick Davis - in Democratic presidential nomination style - launched his campaign by re-emphasising his availability for the job.
"I announced to the team I was available for the captaincy," Davis said.

Sounds to me as though he did.

Wow, I can't believe how many nuffs fell for that one. How embarrassing for you:o

Hard to say really i don't think the relationship is mutual between Roos and Davis i feel you don't drop a player for a month especially as he hasn't been that BAD compared to other players.

But saying all that he has had countless opportunities to cement his place in the team but each time Roos brings him back from a promising effort in the Magoos, he fails badly in the seniors, he has lost his goal kicking accuracy missed 2 kicks at goal 20-25 meters out in the North game that's not the worrying thing, the problem with Nick Davis is he has NO second efforts, no forward pressure if he drops a mark, no chasing like Fevola does, he does nothing but stand there after dropping a mark.

Thats true but it backs up the point I was making... Jude, LRT and Bevan aren't exactly the sort of players who's effort is ever questioned, merely their ability. I'd rather have a team of Jude Boltons giving 100% and butchering the ball than I would a team full of Nick Davis's giving 80% while showing exquisite skills.
