I'm sure this has been discussed several times but it's good to have a refresher in 2018. Try to keep it within the 21st century.

Some potential winners (or losers):

  • Richmond trade Jason Torney & draft picks #2, #18 and #32 to Adelaide for Kane Johnson
  • Adelaide trade draft picks #2 and #18 to North Melbourne for a 31 year old Wayne Carey
  • Gold Coast trade pick 21, 26, 37 and their future 2nd for West Coast's future first, and West Coast made the Grand Final whereas Gold Coast finished second bottom
  • Brisbane trade pick 12 & Lachie Henderson to Carlton for Brendan Fevola
  • Fremantle trade picks #1, #20 & #36 to Hawthorn for Trend Croad and Luke McPharlin

Bit harsh on the Richmond trading Jason Torney, Pick #2, #18 & #32 by saying that only Kane Johnson came back in the deal.

The trade was Torney, Picks 2,18 & 32 for Kane Johnson, Picks #12, #28 & #41.

Once you add the players recruited with the draft picks it becomes

Jason Torney, Daniel Wells, Kris Shore & Luke Jericho

For

Kane Johnson, Jay Schulz, Justin Blumfield (traded from Essendon for pick #28) & Tim Fleming.

That doesn’t make the trade sound quite as bad, especially looking at 2002 Richmond who only 12 months prior played in a prelim final and recruited talent who had won premierships in Johnson (who went on to captain the club) and Blumfield.

No way that Freo trade was the worst ever. You can't get a player as good as McPharlin and it be the worst of all time. I know Hodge was a great player but still not even close to the worst.

St.Kilda trading pick 16 for Andrew Lovett and not getting a single game out of him would have to be up there. Could easily have been the difference between them winning a premiership and not.

John Longmire and Wayne Carey for $10,000 is again worse than anything posted in this thread by a large margin

Judd to Carlton

We got Kennedy and masten

They’re still playing good footy

Gave up another draft pick also that was no good tony notte

But seriously we win out if that trade
That doesn’t belong anywhere near the conversation of worst trade ever, so why even bother bringing it up?

Why

West coast players still playing

Didn’t deliver a flag for Carlton

Sorry I disagree with you
So what are we calling it? 1 Brownlow vs 2 Colemans? Or are trades dictated by which players are still playing? With Heath Shaw at the end of his career with maybe one more year to go now do I get to nominate the Shaw/Adams trade as worst ever too?

What a simplistic and ridiculous way to look at it. Expect no less from you

It was poor because they gave away a 194 cm gun forward .......they gave away picks 2 and 20

Seriously they made one prelim that’s it

As a team he didn’t make Carlton better .....he played super well but he won a Brownlow because no one in Carlton could get a vote of him

Kennedy and masten have played in grand finals ....2 counting Saturday

Croad coming back a few year later and the Hawk picking absolute two ace players in Hodge and Mitchell really make it look that way. IImagin they had taken Steve J or Swan with pick 20, but they failed there. 3 picks in a really unbelievable draft. The pick 10 we got back two year later for Croad there was no one even close available in that draft...

In reality draft picks are a currency that is hard to rate without hindsight.

Carlton aren't poor in 2018 because they traded away 3,20 and a key forward 10 years ago.

Carlton were a bottom 2 side for 5/6 years before Judd came to them. They then played Finals 4/5 years with Judd in the side. Nothing wrong with the trade at all.

Carlton have this won easily.

Pick 16 and 46 for Stephen O'Reilly who played 12 games for Carlton. They had to pay him illegally outside the cap. Then he blew the whistle on them. Then they to pay a fine. Then they got kicked out of the draft and had to recruit hacks. Then it meant that their mulit-million investment in Denis Pagan was a waste because he had no players.

Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16, pick 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

Well since we are looking at it in hindsight. Pick 20 wasn't Steve J or Swan it was Daniel Elstone. Mitchell has absolutely nothing to do with the trade whatsoever (other than the fact he was still available later in the draft). Its a bit rough to look at a trade in terms of who would have been the best player to pick up in that general region of the draft. There were still some real duds in that draft even in the relatively early sections of that draft (though the top players from the draft were spectacular).
