Worst player to play in a grand final??

You are a dill mate - he played well in the prelim and thats why he got a game in the grand final - simple as that. Eddy had 4 touches. Who would you have played??

He's done what I like to call a "Varcoe 2008"

Is a borderline player, who turns it on in the pre-lim, making it impossible to drop him, then goes out and does SFA for the entire GF.

In fact, on Varcoe, I think in 1 quarter of Grand Final football, he's achieved more then in his other 7 combined. Thank **** he turned it on in the last.

no love for richard hadley yet? might have been a good player if not for continual knee problems... whether his form today is more a sign of his talent or just bad luck is debatable, but that he's a spud isn't

From memory Stan Alves couldn't play David Sierakowski in the 97 GF until late in the game as he was too nervous and spent most of the game vomitting, effectively leaving them a man down for the majority of the game.

Stevie J was awful on saturday, had cats loss everyone would be bagging him and not milne. In saying that it would be unjust to say that it was probably Stevie Baker's best ever game for the saints, and again had cats lost it wouldn't be about harry taylor's job but baker's.

Michael Gardiner in 2005 for eagles was pretty piss poor playing in the forward line

Its Athorn by the length of Lygon St.

In a close checking role by Athorn, Long got leather poising and a sore foot from that many kicks and kicked 5 from a bloody wing.
You won't get a worse performance - I still have nightmares.

I was going to Stephen Hooper from Geelong in 1995 Grand Final ...

... but then I read this post and decided I couldn't compete with Mark Athorn.

Spiro Malakellis,Russell Merriman,Steven Handley,Shayne Breuer.

all cat players from late 80's early 90's,no wonder they lost 4 gf's in 7 years

Breuer was a star. I was shattered when he left to go to Port Adelaide in 2007.

from my team : Stakers 2005 G/F was a lowlight reel in itself
2007 : westhoff ( then again if it wasnt for the Burgoyne's and the cornes' brothers-the margin would be 200 points +)

We have a winner! His direct opponent got 30 possessions from full back, and even out-scored him IIRC, and Scarlett only kicked a behind. :D

Not a bad player by any means, but Mark Bairstow had some shocking performances in grand finals. Played on Matera in 1992, and Matera won the Norm Smith, then played on Kemp in 1994, and Kemp was Norm Smith. I wonder if any other player has played on two different opponents who both won Norm Smith medals.

I'd like to see that stats for Port's 07 GF side.
About the same, overall.
(Possessions - marks - score)

D Motlop 4 - 0 - 0.0
J Westhoff 7 - 1 - 0.1
D Rodan 7 - 1 - 0.1
B Ebert 8 - 4 - 0.2
T Logan 8 - 3 - 1.0
J Surjan 9 - 0 - 0.0
B Lade 9 - 4 - 0.0
T Boak 11 - 2 - 0.1
M Pettigrew 12 - 6 - 0.0
D Pearce 13 - 2 - 0.0
D Brogan 13 - 2 - 0.0
Wakelin 14 - 3 - 0.0

Tredrea is next but he took 8 marks and kicked 2.1 so I don't think he deserves to be on that list.

Mark Athorn (or something like that) - Carlton 1993.

Its Athorn by the length of Lygon St.

That name is burned in my brain thanks to HG and Roy (yes we did watch the game that year with the TV sound turned down - who can forget Essendon's 'swirling zone defence' in that game) who, despite being rugby men, picked up on it very early and from then on anytime Athorn got nowhere near the ball the cry went up - ATHORN!!!!

Very ordinary performance.

Considering you have hundreds of players to choose from, you're coming up with some rubbish.

Headland was equal sixth in the 2002 Brownlow Medal, the year he played his GF. He had 33 disposals and 3 goals in the Preliminary Final.

Carried by his team mates who took the focus off him
Voss
Black
Akermanis
Lappin
Power

and as a result made him look better. Any coincidence since he came to the Dockers and he was a big fish in a small pond he's struggled to be anywhere near as effective? Down hill skier of the highest magnitude

Westhoff. What a dud.

Brent Staker in 05.

Most of Collingwood in 03.
Worst brain fades in a GF were Rhyce Shaw in 03 spoonfeed to Lynch and ditto Harry Taylor 08 to Stewie Dew (Harry made up for it this year though)

Brent Renouf or Travis Varcoe in 2008. Or Simon Taylor was possibly the worst ever to miss out on a Grand Final.

Was it Buchanon in 06?
Fumbled it twice, went to ground in front of goals and let Judd kick the goal.
What a crucial score that turned out to be as well!

How about in a side lower than mid-table - like Hawthorn?

Aaaaah, Cat fans and their obsession with Hawthorn.

I love it.:D

How long will it take for them to get over it?

For me, the disappointment of this year is soothed by the knowledge that we are still spoiling the Cats party.

Come on guys, you won a flag this year - move on from 2008.

I'm sure you've watched the 08 GF 300 million times by now, haven't you noticed that it wasn't Harry's fault, but his teammates who weren't in the right position for a set play?

FFS we are getting all kinds. So many of your supporters have embarrassed themselves on these boards in the last few days with their pathetic wailing and gnashing of teeth over our win (simply because not only are you no longer reigning premiers, but you also didn't even make the finals), and now we've got the likes of you trying to turn it around saying WE are the ones that are obsessed.

Get this through your head.....08 is history, for us AND for you. WE are the titleholders again, so believe me, the nightmare that was the 2008 GF is now a distant memory. We will also be back for another crack at it next year. After your crap performances this year, will you be there for a crack as well? I suggest you spend some time thinking about that rather than worry about what we Geelong supporters are thinking.

And FWIW we are only thinking about two things. One WE WON THE FLAG!!!!!! and two, how bitter and twisted a large amount of Hawthorn supporters are about our victory.

What makes it even funnier is that Hawkers are taking the result worse than St Kilda fans!
