The Name of Our Game

Not popular in China and india? Where have you been the hiding the last two years? Lol.... Chinese and Indian super leagues are changing the face of world football, more so in China, the money being pumped into it is insane. MLS is continually growing, your comments have no substance, and you had to resort to abuse. Pathetic.
That's laughable.

Three billion people in China & India, and there's not one good player.

The interest just isn't there.

I see two ways this will go.

Either:
Soccer will claim the term football globally

OR

the term football will refer to a collection of sports.

It may seem that in Australia its leaning towards the former. However having traveled to almost every European country in the last few years, it is definitely not the case in much of them.

The world is going global, and the afl needs to step up and join the party or risk being sidelined. The good thing is, we have THE best product. Don't let some of the insular soccer flogs tell you differently. The commercialisation of soccer had starting turning many fans off it.
The other point in favour of football is the fact that it's a sport that transcends class. Whilst soccer is breaking out of its working class roots, across Europe you will see divisions between cities based upon their rugby/soccer preferences. Soccer is followed by the masses, rugby is followed by those in power (have you ever wondered why prince William and harry are pictured at significantly more rugby matches than soccer?).

The better way to say it is:

Soccer is massively popular in most of the UK. However that level of popularity is not equalled in many other countries.
Yes soccer is the most popular sport in most African countries, but it's not a religion like it is portrayed in the UK.
It is growing in popularity in many countries, but many people mistakenly think it's a religion in 200 countries. It's not, is not even the most popular sport in every European country.

To me football is football - as in association football

And footy is Aussie rules

It's all very much contextual though as it depends who I am hanging around with

I do find it odd that are so many games called "football" in the world, yet ours (Aussie rules) is the only code where you can score the highest score possible actually kicking the ball between the goals (association football aside as you can score a goal with any part of your body apart from your arm)

Both rugby codes have tries (worth more than field goals, penalties and conversions) and gridiron has touchdowns (worh the most again)

So you could say ours is the most accurate use of the name in relation to the scoring...

I don't actually get why footy fans are afraid of the A League and soccer in general... The A League will cease to exist in a decade, and soccer only gets any real attention when we play in the World Cup, and even then, it's hardly news.

As to the name, I've never heard anyone call soccer 'football' here. It just creates confusion.

The fear is rationale.

If thats the case, please let us know what sports and which countries that soccer/football is not the most popular sport in that country? I suspect your quite wrong on that front.

**** off, where did you find that nonsense? So your telling me that football is not number one in Spain, France, and Italy... haha yeh right, what a load of rubbish.

Yer it is wrong on plenty of counts, but Gaelic football or hurling is the most popular code in Ireland and ice hockey is a religion in some Northern European countries as well as Canada
