It's not half-arsed. It is a massive project.

Firstly, I don't really like your logic. The women chosen to represent the club's in the National Women's competition will be playing both at the highest level and, later, with their suburban clubs. I mean, technically they play more matches? Anyway, would any woman capable enough of competiting at this level pass it up, this is an incredible milestone in the game's history.

Secondly, more to my point, is that this is the first steps in a long term project. I am normally very cynical of the AFL, but its commitment to the women's game over the past couple of years has been astounding. Where I live, NSW, the establishment of women's acadamies, state representative teams (both women's and girls) and an ever increasing Sydney Women's competition (which has two divisions) is a credit to the AFL. However, I don't think we can be foolish enough to believe this will immediately translate into a very strong talent pool. It will take a generation, and girls all over the country are now recognising there are paths in football. Not necessarily careers (yet?), but there are opportunities.

In terms of the National Women's competition, the women's competition will be eased in. The skill set and professionalism will obviously not be up to scratch in the first few years, but it establishes a platform to achieve higher levels both on and off the field for women's footy in the foreseeable future. The AFL has established the framework for women's footy, and as a result we will see a strong competition in the future.

The Women's competition is essentially like the formation of the Giants and Suns. A long-term project that is trying to target a demographic disengaged from football in an attempt to reap the financial and social benefits in the future. The AFL will back this women's competition 100%.
It was done specifically to let these players play at the club level. Taking the 200 odd best players out of club footy, letting a huge gap in quality open up between national and club footy wouldn't work. The first 5 years or so will see it in development phase.

It was also done to get some clear air for coverage. Trying to build a profile when a story on the league gets buried pages in would be difficult.

but then Geelong will then have to travel an hour or so by bus thereafter. how that fair?:straining:
Dunno. They could jump for it while flying over Geelong for all I care, but this is really the thread for unpopular AFL opinions so I'll leave it alone.

My unpopular opinion...

The contract that binds the Grand Final to the MCG should be paid out in lieu and the Grand Final should be played at the highest seeded teams home ground or played at the venue of the highest bidder. Until that happens AFL will never live up to the likes of Soccer/Cricket and will always be an amateur league

What like the FA cup?
Or the Champions league final played at a neutral ground most of the time?

As a fan of an interstate side I still think the GF should be held at the G, until other grounds can hold 95k

So what's a scoring shot then?

Think before you post.
To get a scoring shot. You have to have a shot at goal.

What about kicking towards goal?

Kicking in the general direction of goal?

Much much better than previous efforts.

But small descriptions cater for small minds.

I like listening to Wayne Carey. Let himself down quite a few times in the past but i genuinely enjoy hearing what he has to say about footy and enjoy his sense of humour. Thats probably unpopular.

Not sure its unpopular.
His views on the game are often spot on.

Whether he should have the job or not is the debateable part.

So you're saying the AFL should organise the grand final on less than a weeks notice?

I hate when the media says that a team has "moved into equal <ladder position>."

Today all the mail is about the Western Bulldogs moving into equal 2nd.

As far as I can tell, they're in 5th at the moment and percentage still exists.

Ladder envy: It's not how long it is, mate; it's how you climb it.

I'm still loving the whole " kick the shit through it our way" and how clowns like brereton and King will come up with some idiotic scientific reason as to why they are doing it. The " kick the shit through it our way" happens about 70-80 times a game. Have a look next time you are watching.

How would they ever do that, if only they had precedence like a semi or prelim to look to. If the league is fair dinkum, then the top ranked GF team should be at home. But we all know we follow a business not a comp so we just accept it

I don't really get that. There aren't any major leagues in the world really that works the play-off final directly at the higher ranked teams home ground. Only one I can think of is MLS, who do it because they don't have the nation-wide attention to play at neutral grounds.

Super Bowl = Neutral stadium
NBA Finals = Rotation over multiple games, a format the AFL does not follow
NRL GF = ANZ Stadium
Champions League final = Neutral
and so on...

Eddie Betts soccered the ball off the ground in the game against us from 5 meters out and dribbled across the face when all he had to was pick it up and he would have goaled
Show boating to the max and if Lindsay Thomas had of done it he would have been smashed on every footy show for the week

Double standards

I understand that the grand final is played at the MCG regardless, but I hate when people use 2015 as an example of the AFL being unfair to the top team by not playing it at their home ground. Hawthorn technically deserved it, as they beat the top ranked team in the preliminary final, in Fremantle.

I know it's a super weird pet hate, but when discussing it, use a better example.

Deserved it? That's not how it works in any home ground finals thing in any sport. It's always the best record during the season.

By your logic Hawks earned it because they beat the Dockers, but then we took the rights to home ground because we beat the Hawks.

fwiw I have no issues with the gf being played at the MCG, but your logic is terrible.

what are you actually referring to?
